QUESTION Uh, what?
I moved one of my pawns up and the black pawn moves to c3 and captures it? I'm confused, can someone explains this to me pls?

I am 1200 on chess.com and 1400 9. Lichess.
Here is what is observed while playing on both platforms.
Chess.com players are more willing to throw games after hanging a piece.
Lichess players have a better understanding of fundamentals. They develop pieces, improve their position then launch attacks.
I win games on chess.com mostly by waiting for opponents to make a mistake. On lichess I have to grind them down in the endgame.
What is your experience?

Basically what the title says. I made my account back in 2022 but I have only started playing seriously around July (during the summer holidays). Finally hit 700 rating and I am rather proud of it. I know it is not a lot, but it is honest work :)
Please let me know what you think and your experience climbing up the ratings!
And fyi I play 10minute rapid games, so no blitz until I get better.

Backstory: I am learning how to play chess on chess.com app. I frequently encounter what I think are mistakes but have me questioning my sanity!
This apparently is checkmate, but how? The black king can move to h8, and can evade the check by using the black rook to block the bishop or take the white rook if it moved to g8. I’m a noob so probably missing something just having a hard time finding what it is if anyone could shed some light?
Edit: for clarity this isn’t a game this a puzzle where I need to make one move to create a check mate. This is the only move where it will deem the puzzle solved (pic two)

Guy resigned but I don't know how this wasn't checkmate? King can't move and nothing can take the bishop? Or is it a brain fart moment?

I started playing chess a while back, but was stuck for the longest time. Tried the Game Review feature on chessdotcom and it was shit, didnt really give me a sense of the actual mistake and why and also deeper patterns.
So I created a personal coach which looked at my past games, drew the most important failure points and generated daily puzzles & gameplay accordingly. And the results were very surprising: I was taking a lot of time on some of my moves (this I knew) but those moves were 3x more likely to be mistakes in 10-minute games.
I gave this to a friend at ~2000 rating and his analysis pointed how he was making more mistakes with his queen compared to other pieces.
curious to know what worked for you to improve your games and rating

What the fk is a4 and why would black not take after the absurd rook sacrifice.

It just makes me so mad when he starts talm about me playing so well in a game where I lost horribly.

Hey everyone,
I was just curious to see what everyone’s daily streaks were sitting at on Chess . Com & who has played the most days in a row? Do we have anyone here who has played over 1000 days in a row?
r/chessbeginners • u/Accurate-Soil684 • 14h ago
I’m white, he’s black
He’s winning like crazy in this position
Only idea I had after bishop takes bishop was knight takes and queen e6 check forks the knight, king and rook
But that is very easily avoided by rook takes bishop on d5
I just don’t see why he resigned

People will often exhort you that capturing the center and castling early is key to a strong chess game. What's crazy to me is that even if I do both these things, I often find myself getting demolished. When I look at lichess analysis, the reasons for why my moves were "inaccurate", or why my opponents were better, are incredibly obscure. I almost feel like an advanced intermediate player is aware of some "rule behind the rule" that I'm not privy to.

Hey i am pretty new to chess. I have been playing for like a week or less and i ve noticed that playing against bots way out of my legue is weirdly easy. i just beat Maria on Chess.com on my second try (without any hints if someone asks) but i cant seem to get passed elo 300 whilst playing against normal players.
Are the bots Elos miscalculated on purpose to make u feel better? Or why is this the case?

Hi all, (for reference I've asked this question on another sub but wanted to get another set of opinions)
I've been playing chess on and off for a few years now and I have never been very good (my current elo is around the 100-120 range and it's never been much better). Regardless of my current lack of skill, I do want to improve at least a little. Around 800 would probably be a goal for me since I know I don't want to make studying chess a full time job for myself and I think anything beyond that would probably be unreachable given my current level.
What are some tips for improving at the lower level? Here's a recent game of mine for reference where I missed my opponent's blunder that gave me a free mate and ended up losing on time: https://www.chess.com/analysis/collection/100-elo-hell-sokNa9ok/4BYSqgfBgr/analysis

Hi chess beginners!♞♜♛
I’m urgently looking for participants for a survey for my Master’s thesis. The study explores how certain traits, life experiences, attitudes, and behaviors are related to one another.🧠
I’d really appreciate it if you could spare about 10 minutes to complete the survey.⏱️
Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to participate in the survey.🔞
You can find the survey here: https://ww3.unipark.de/uc/research_study_university_Bern_Switzerland/
As a token of appreciation, participants can choose to enter a prize draw to win one of five USD 100 prizes.💰💸
The survey is, of course, anonymous and has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Bern.🧑🏼🎓⚖️
Thank you so much for your support!🤗🥰

Wouldn’t moving the king make me unable to castle? I feel like being able to have my rook out and my king properly protected is more valuable than having my knight closer to the center of the board. No?

To all of my opponents who thought I was playing beyond my rating. Or that I should not have improved that quickly. It's definitely not because I am above average. It's because Danya broke the curve and was an excellent teacher. Danya is responsible for all of my Jobava London lines.
I'm thankful.

I keep facing this opening so often. And I wonder what opening that is and why I keep facing it so often. Anyone know?

It's not every day that you see a bishop pinning another bishop
