Hello and thanks for reviewing!
I moderate r/PigmentPourDaily r/MobileGames r/BlockGame and have confirmed that making a post flair Mod Only also hides it from the Android (and likely iPhone) app’s flair navigation for non-moderators.
The subs' ANNOUNCEMENT, DAILY, HARD, and BONUS, etc flairs organize official puzzle posts. Members need to browse those categories, but we want assignment of those labels restricted to moderators. I have receive numerous user reports of this issue and have set these post flair to public as a workaround.
What happens
- My moderator account can see the categories in the Android navigation menu.
- A regular user could only see BUG REPORT.
- The same user could see all the categories in the browser sidebar.
- Making the affected flairs available for users to assign makes them appear in the Android navigation.
Mobile flair navigation was already enabled, and the sidebar flair widget was already configured. The affected user also tried clearing the app cache without resolving it. The desktop flair widget was already enabled and user was able to see options successfully there, but not installed mobile reddit app.
Steps to reproduce
- Use a post flair already assigned to public posts.
- Enable Use post flair as navigation.
- Set that flair to Mod Only.
- Visit the subreddit using a non-moderator account in the official Android app. The flair is missing from navigation.
- Disable Mod Only for that same flair and force close reopen the app and the subreddit. The flair becomes available in navigation.
Expected result
Non-moderators cannot assign a restricted flair to their own posts, but can use it to browse existing public posts carrying that flair with the Reddit mobile installed app.
Actual result
Restricting assignment also hides the category from mobile navigation. Restoring navigation requires allowing members to assign the category themselves.
That forces us to choose between usable puzzle navigation and keeping official puzzle categories restricted. The desktop sidebar supports browsing those categories while assignment remains restricted.
Reddit's Post Flair documentation describes Mod Only as an assignment restriction and does not mention this additional navigation restriction.
Other moderators have described the same issue:
Can Reddit confirm whether this is a bug or an intentional limitation? Is there a supported way to keep assignment restricted while allowing the category to appear in mobile navigation?
