Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!
First, the least fun part in all of this –
We need to talk about our subreddit culture.
Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.
I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.
The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.
Our expectations and what better looks like
If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.
So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."
We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.
With that in mind, we all need to stop:
Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.
I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.
That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.
Now for the fun stuff –
New mods
We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:
They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.
It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.
I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.
If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.
Updated tools and resources
Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!
Roboto is a super sentimental actual human
I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.
I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.
There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.
At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.
Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.
- Roboto
Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

I wasn’t even planing on getting a tank but my mom has recently gotten back into fish keeping and sent me a tank out of nowhere. It was a tiny 3 gallon so I originally was only going to get neocardinia shrimp. I stopped at the petco near me one day after work to pick up a couple cleaning supplies after my tank had been cycling for a few weeks, and saw they have baby bettas. To say I was appalled is an understatement. Everyone knows how horrible bettas are treated at pet stores in general but idk why it struck me so hard seeing all those tiny babies. One was out of place of the other babies so I picked up the cup labeled “baby girl betta” with no other descriptors and she was not gonna make it through the night. She could barely swim to the top of A CUP to get air. I’ve had her for a month now and turns out I have a specials needs betta with a gill deformity. I really didn’t think she would make it but I thought taking her home was betting than dying in that cup. She had a bubble trapped under her gill plate but if it got too big it would pop out and instantly be replaced with another bubble. She does still have her bubble but is doing fantastic otherwise. She hunts live detritus worms and copepods and is super spunky even jumping out of the water when she sees blood worms or pellets coming. I’m upgrading to a 20 gallon long community soon and am super excited 🫰

Boyfriend found someone trying to rehome some bettas from a breeder which is why the tank is smaller than ideal. He loves fish so naturally he asked if I wanted one and I fell in love with this pretty guy. I know this one is technically a boy but I’ve been calling her she, so any name suggestions are welcome (my boyfriend thinks I should name her after a type of prescription animal medicine eyedrop so really….any at all)

Rearranged the plants in the tank for more swimming space and placed a coconut shell for his cave.
One anubias leaf turned yellow coz it came too close to the heater 🥹. Some of the plants are also turning brown/melting, is it due to the movement during the relocation process?

We’ve had Nova for a year now and the whole family loves her. She always comes out to greet us and then starts dancing and wanting to be fed.
We were in a Petco randomly one day and my wife looked at the bettas for whatever reason, then she comes out with Nova (who was half this size at the time). She said she “chose” my wife when she picked up her tiny little cup they keep them in (I hate those things). I couldn’t say no, so here we are!

My betta has a lot of clear edges around his fins, this is just new growth right? Or is it early fin rot? I have all the stuff to treat it and have successfully treated another rescue.
tldr: please ease my stress, is the clear edges fin rot?

He is generally a pretty lazy fish and likes to sit on the aquascaping, but the past couple days I’ve noticed him either floating near the top or laying down on the bottom. I took him out to take a closer look and noticed these red splotches on his fins and either an ulcer or a puncture in his fin. His gills also look darker than they did before. Could this be columnaris?
Water parameters:
5gal tank with lots of plants, power filter, and heater
There are also shrimp and snails in the tank
Temp 65-75 depending on how warm the room is
Ph:7.8
Ammonia: 0-0.25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0

Before and After.
Halfmoon Betta fish, Cyu the stupid.
On my last post, someone commented that he might have fin rot. I didn't think much about it because I'm stupid and ignorant, and I believe he has had those white spots since I got him.
But I realise it wasn't just a spot. It's healed a bit, as you can see, but the white spots keep spreading, and there's also a bit of a rip on his upper fin.
I tested the water, and the pH has increased, so I did almond tea, Indian leaves, and water changes. It returned to normal, but after two days, Cyu's white spots keep spreading, so I think it's fin rot.
I already bought that medicine, but how do you exactly quarantine them? Please help, thank you</333

My husband and I never planned to have a fish but new year 2026 had another plan for us.
Long story short, Sushi was abandoned by its owner to a housekeeper who offered him to us because she doesn't have any means to care for him. I asked my husband if we could take him and he didn't hesitate to say yes.
We don't know his age and the housekeeper doesn't fully know the details but his fins were fully grown already. I'm so bad with documentation that I didn't take a picture of him when we first got him. His fins were clamped and he was still as a stone in a small fishbowl inside a cold storage room.
It feels weird now to wake up and he isn't there to swim up, actively expecting for food. It feels strange to not soak pellets first thing in the morning. It feels different to arrive home and not see his grumpy face.
Thank you Sushi~ Swim in peace~
I also want to thank this sub. We didn't know anything about fish. We rescued him impulsively so this sub taught us everything. We were able to set up his 6 gallon heavily planted tank because of this sub and everyone here. Thank you all~

So we had a betta fish for now almost 4 full months, he's fine, but he recently got obese, I saw him having a belly and I can stress out from anything, so I dug a little bit of research and found that he might be obese, I can't also give a screenshot as I'm writing this from my laptop and I'm restricted from my phone for now (but when I have my phone back I WILL send an image of him) , but I actually want help on how can I save this poor dude? I have no knowledge, and I actually have no time to do proper research as I'm in a study rush right now, but I need suggestions and how I can help him..

I totally intended on getting a male betta. But for the same coloration was $30+ and she was $5 😛 can anyone tell me what type of beta she is? I love the dark coloration, but it makes her so hard to get decent pictures of.

I have tried everything available, salt, CMF. In europe i have no access to antibiotics. His fins keep getting worse and worse but he's a fighter and has loads of energy and a massive appetite. His fins keep getting shorter and there's not much of it left and I am so scared of it reaching his body. Please help, I don't know how to help my baby anymore :(

Just got him today from a shitty aquarium store, he was in a TINY dirty cup. Don’t have much in the tank right now since it was a spare but will pick up live plants and decor tomorrow. Let me know some name suggestions!
