META Building a Better r/bettafish: Culture, New Mods, and a Look Ahead

Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!

First, the least fun part in all of this –

We need to talk about our subreddit culture.

Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.

I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.

The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.

Our expectations and what better looks like

If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.

So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."

We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.

With that in mind, we all need to stop:

  • Telling people they should have done more research
  • Immediately calling people abusers for making mistakes
  • Shaming the pineapple (or any other novelty decor/bowl)
  • Attacking aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs
  • Debating what it means to rescue a betta on posts where ethical sourcing of fish isn’t the main topic

Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.

I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.

That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.

Now for the fun stuff –

New mods

We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:

They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.

It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.

I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.

If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.

Updated tools and resources

Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!

  • We’ve begun a major revision of the subreddit wiki. Some of our work in progress pages are already live, with more to come.
  • Select pages are also now linked in the subreddit sidebar to streamline access to key information for new betta fish keepers.
  • In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out additional tools that should make it easier to share information that we often find ourselves repeating. Our hope is that this will help address some of the burnout we see many of you all experiencing.

Roboto is a super sentimental actual human

I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.

I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.

There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.

At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.

Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.

- Roboto

Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

Welcome to r/bettafish!

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

I wasn’t even planing on getting a tank but my mom has recently gotten back into fish keeping and sent me a tank out of nowhere. It was a tiny 3 gallon so I originally was only going to get neocardinia shrimp. I stopped at the petco near me one day after work to pick up a couple cleaning supplies after my tank had been cycling for a few weeks, and saw they have baby bettas. To say I was appalled is an understatement. Everyone knows how horrible bettas are treated at pet stores in general but idk why it struck me so hard seeing all those tiny babies. One was out of place of the other babies so I picked up the cup labeled “baby girl betta” with no other descriptors and she was not gonna make it through the night. She could barely swim to the top of A CUP to get air. I’ve had her for a month now and turns out I have a specials needs betta with a gill deformity. I really didn’t think she would make it but I thought taking her home was betting than dying in that cup. She had a bubble trapped under her gill plate but if it got too big it would pop out and instantly be replaced with another bubble. She does still have her bubble but is doing fantastic otherwise. She hunts live detritus worms and copepods and is super spunky even jumping out of the water when she sees blood worms or pellets coming. I’m upgrading to a 20 gallon long community soon and am super excited 🫰

Rearranged the plants in the tank for more swimming space and placed a coconut shell for his cave.

One anubias leaf turned yellow coz it came too close to the heater 🥹. Some of the plants are also turning brown/melting, is it due to the movement during the relocation process?

We’ve had Nova for a year now and the whole family loves her. She always comes out to greet us and then starts dancing and wanting to be fed.

We were in a Petco randomly one day and my wife looked at the bettas for whatever reason, then she comes out with Nova (who was half this size at the time). She said she “chose” my wife when she picked up her tiny little cup they keep them in (I hate those things). I couldn’t say no, so here we are!

My husband and I never planned to have a fish but new year 2026 had another plan for us.

Long story short, Sushi was abandoned by its owner to a housekeeper who offered him to us because she doesn't have any means to care for him. I asked my husband if we could take him and he didn't hesitate to say yes.

We don't know his age and the housekeeper doesn't fully know the details but his fins were fully grown already. I'm so bad with documentation that I didn't take a picture of him when we first got him. His fins were clamped and he was still as a stone in a small fishbowl inside a cold storage room.

It feels weird now to wake up and he isn't there to swim up, actively expecting for food. It feels strange to not soak pellets first thing in the morning. It feels different to arrive home and not see his grumpy face.

Thank you Sushi~ Swim in peace~

I also want to thank this sub. We didn't know anything about fish. We rescued him impulsively so this sub taught us everything. We were able to set up his 6 gallon heavily planted tank because of this sub and everyone here. Thank you all~

I just started him in his 10 gallon 2 days ago, and I’m still getting the right things for his tank. we just happen to be on a low budget, but I’ve been stuck on what to name him. I’ve been trying to see more of his personality his little feisty and a little skittish. We’ve only had him a few days but I don’t know how to get his little personality to come out. And ugh I just wanna give him a name but I can’t find a good one any suggestions?

Help A weird dot on my bettafish

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

So i have him for a year, got him from an aquarium store because i thought he was near his end but turns out he wasn’t lol, and a while ago, maybe 2 weeks ago i saw this dot on him. I was searching for answers and came across a disease called "chromatophoroma". The person describing it said it wasn’t aggressive and that it won’t affect fish’s life span. Did any of you know what it might be? I would be very grateful for any help. My betta Hookfang is acting like before, he’s eating, he’s swimming normally, he still played with me, his colours aren’t off, his temperature is about 26,5°C

Help Does my Betta look ok?

I recently brought home my Betta fish about 4 days ago after completing a fish less cycle on my 5 gallon tank. Water perimeters are all within range. I chose a 5 gallon because I wanted a long fin Betta.

He has spurts of energy where he likes to swim around. Other times, he likes to chill at the bottom of the tank or in his hammock. I know this isn’t abnormal, just sharing for context.

My tank plants (from a local aquarium store) came with bladder snails. I got my Betta from the same store. I have noticed he doesn’t seem to be eating much of his food but I’ve noticed a decrease in the snail population. I assume he’s eating the snails?

My main concern is his fins. Do they seem clamped to anyone? I don’t necessarily see any fin rot but I haven’t seen him flare at all since having him. I purchased a mirror to see if that would get him to flare. I had it in the tank for 5-10 minutes and he was completely unbothered by it. I’ll attach pictures of him and his tank setup.

I do intend to add tannis to the water. I have some Indian Almond Leaves arriving in a couple days.

Am I overthinking it or should I be concerned?

The hoover of Fluval bug-bite flakes. Flicker of the snail. Surfer of water change currents. Intimidator of the popcorn kernel and the matcha mochi. Chomper of absolutely everything bite-sized. The awesomest wet-pet companion. The most beautifullest and bestest fishie ever.

Please forgive my botched euthanasia of you. I only wanted to end your suffering. I hope I didn't cause you more pain and fear when I tried. And please also know that even though I really, really cried, I really tried.

Swim in peace my beautiful fishie. I will miss you forever. I don't blame you for a second for all the stress and hurt I went through trying to take care of you. I only wish we had more time together.

Help I’m crashing out over my tank. PLEASE help

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am losing my mind. I got this rescued boi into a pre cycled tank in July. My tank was a 6 gallon tall initially, as that’s what I had cycled, but with his large fins after a few months I knew he needed a long one.

About 2 weeks ago, I bought the new tank and transferred EVERYTHING over minus the water. Same sand, same decor, same plants, same filter media. The tank looked great and I figured since I was transferring everything over it wouldn’t be a totally new cycling process?

Then, to make matters worse, my filter breaks. I immediately ran to get a new one and put the exact same media and sponge back in, but I worry it was broken for a few days providing little to no filtration. I don’t know why I have all of this green algae. I’ve been taking it out with tank water and scrubbing and rinsing and it just won’t go away. I need to fix this so bad and I just don’t even know what to do.

My parameters are great : 0 ammonia, nit .5ppm, bad nit 0. But my ph is 8.0….. I’ve been trying to lower it with distilled water from my brita (I let it get warm) but it’s not working. Would actual proper bottled water changes help reduce the ph since my tap water kh is brutal where I live? Just need ANY advice on how to fix this monstrosity.

Should I just redo this entire tank?

Help Is this safe? Am I worrying over nothing?

Post image

Excuse the mess. I’m cleaning everything up tomorrow. This is a solid wood dresser and a ten gallon cube tank (I’m getting more resting spots near the top because it is about a foot of water) I read that 10 gallons is roughly 110lbs. I’d assume this one is closer to 120 for safety. I’m worried the dresser can’t handle this. Am I worried over nothing? I don’t keep much in the drawers aside from mostly junk and a few clothing items. The dresser handled a 5 gallon on one side without issue. Is this a bad place for this tank?
