New Rule: No pictures of dead animals

Hi all,

If you've lost a dog, we all understand, and mourn with you. Please if you're going to post pictures of them, please make it a picture of them alive. Let's celebrate that and not the end.

I asked you for a sign… and I think you sent me one. 🐾

Since losing my dog, I’ve started taking walks at different times. Our usual morning walk feels too strange without his leash in my hand. The house has felt different, too. I still look down before getting out of bed. I still expect to hear those little footsteps following me into the kitchen.

A few nights ago, I opened the journal “Dear Dog, I Want to Say…”

I didn’t know where to begin, so I completed a prompt that began:

“I wish I knew…”

I wrote:

“…that you were okay. If you can, send me a little hello. Something I’ll recognize.”

Exactly four days later, I made myself go to our old park in the afternoon.

I sat on the bench where we used to stop when his legs got tired. I looked at the path, remembering how slowly we had walked during those last few weeks.

Then someone called his name.

I turned before I could think.

A woman was calling her puppy back from the grass. He had my dog’s name. Of all the names he could have had, he had his.

The puppy ran past her and stopped at my feet.

She apologized, but I told her it was okay. I bent down, and he leaned against my legs while I scratched his ears.

I managed to wait until they walked away before I cried.

I don’t know whether it was a coincidence or the little hello I had hoped for. But for the first time in days, I felt a little closer to him.

Ares is the cat babysitterc

So this is a kitten Ares found left to die in a bucket, as a newborn (with his sister) on a morning walk. The kitten was really scared of ares for a long time, survival instincts etc now he's always trying to get into Ares skin. And Ares just tolerates it all so good. I have 6 cats (all rescues) and all of them see Ares as thier protector and heated blanket. They go in the yard w him and if he barks they all book it for the inside. Otherwise they all just hang out in the garden chasing bugs.

Maybe a tervuren?

I adopted this sweet girl from a shelter three months ago. She was listed as a German shepherd mix, which I didn’t think to question as I was not searching for a specific breed.

I’ve been approached several times by people insisting she is a tervuren. I had not even heard of this breed 🫣 but after researching I admit she resembles one more than a gsd imho.

So, I thought I’d ask the community! Any strong feelings about this? It seems odd that a terv (esp a purebred) would be at a shelter as they seem somewhat rare?

Sheep herders in Europe

Post image

Hello all!

I am starting a personal project that involves historical documentation of the Belgian Shepherds and their original purpose.

I was wondering if anybody knows of owners or breeders of any of the varieties that live in Europe and whose dogs work day to day on sheep or cattle? Not looking for sporters or people who only train to compete– I'm wanting to speak about distinct working dogs.

Thank you!

(Picture of my two for tax!)

*Obviously fine if they are "full time working dogs" AND do sports/conformation!

Ear question

Does your Tervs ears always stay up? Or do they go down as well? All the pics Ive seen posted, their ears are always up. My girls ears do both, I was just curious if this is a natural breed thing, or if people tape their ears up as puppies to keep them in the up position.

Questions on crate training

I got an 8 week old female Terv puppy last week Thursday. My first time with the breed (previous dog was a White Swiss Shep), and the first time I'm using a crate, so I want to make sure I get it right.

She's very comfortable in the crate - she'll happily go in herself to fetch a toy or to wind down, but she usually ends up sleeping under my desk at my feet. I don't force her to sleep in the crate.

Questions:

* She chews everything, including the floor, mirrors and her crate. I assume that's normal? She has access to healthier chew toys in the crate as well, it is mostly a matter of mouthing whatever is in reach. My previous dog did the same, but crate wasn't part of the equation.

* The first few days I had her she easily self-regulated and went to sleep. Now (5 days later) she needs more crate time and takes longer to sleep. I assume that's because she was stressed and traumatized by the strange environment the first few days; now that she's comfortable in the environment FOMO kicks in and she wants to stay awake to enjoy every moment?

Are they supposed to have tiny little sticks for legs?

This is Gremlin. He's 9 months old. He looks normal/healthy most of the time, until he gets wet, and then he looks like this. Getting a tiny bit worried. Isn't he meant to be developing a little muscle and/or filling out soon? 😅

Had 5 different Tervs growing up, he is the first Groenendael. They have lots of fun together, although we are working on him not stealing his sisters ball.
