Community Identifying a record or seeing how much it's worth? Use DISCOGS.COM

https://www.discogs.com/

Some people have asked for a post like this to be stickied in the sub because we constantly get people asking what a record is worth or what version they have.

You need to match the matrix information. Which is the part of the record between the music/grooves and the label. There will be etched and/or stamped letters, symbols and numbers. You can just do a search for the artist and album name with the matrix info typed in. After searching, it should pull up all albums that match. If there’s more than one, you will have to figure out which it is by checking under the barcode and other identifiers section.

You also may need to look at info on the vinyl label and the sleeve. There will sometimes be additional info under the notes section.

Please check out r/discogs if you need more help searching but READ THEIR RULES.

Discussion Why do people always claim that John Lennon was bisexual? Is there any truth to this?

Post image

Why do people so often claim that John Lennon was bisexual? There’s nothing wrong with being bisexual, of course, but from everything I’ve read, John seemed to identify as straight and never explicitly described himself as anything else.
I can understand why people might speculate that he was curious about his sexuality, but I’ve never come across anything particularly convincing to suggest that he was genuinely attracted to men. He seemed to be very interested in women, had numerous affairs, and was reportedly involved with prostitutes as well. Yet I can’t recall any credible account of him actually having a sexual relationship with another man.

The most commonly cited example seems to be the story involving Brian Epstein, but even then, there doesn’t appear to be any solid evidence that anything sexual happened between them. Then there’s the speculation about John having sexual feelings for Paul McCartney, which I’ve never really understood. When I look at their relationship, I see two incredibly close friends and creative partners who shared an extraordinary bond, but nothing that necessarily suggests romantic or sexual attraction.
I’m not saying it’s impossible that John had some curiosity or complicated feelings about his sexuality, but I think there’s a difference between speculating about someone’s sexuality and having actual evidence to support those claims.
What do you think? Is there any credible evidence that John was bisexual, or has speculation about his sexuality been exaggerated over the years because of his close relationships with other men and the stories surrounding him?

Discussion Would you classify The Beatles as a Rock band or a Pop Band?

Post image
35 Upvotes

I see people arguing about this all the time lol. Whenever someone calls the Beatles a pop-rock band or describes them as having a strong pop influence, some rock fans seem to get offended by it. Personally, I don’t understand why being labelled pop is such a bad thing. There’s nothing wrong with pop music, and I don’t get why some people treat the term like it’s an insult or something that somehow diminishes a band’s credibility.

Personally, I’d classify the Beatles primarily as a rock band that incorporated plenty of pop elements into their music. They could write catchy, accessible songs with great melodies and harmonies, but they were also willing to experiment with different sounds, arrangements and recording techniques, especially as their career progressed. I think that’s what made them so great: they could appeal to a mainstream audience without sacrificing their musical creativity.

A band I’d be more inclined to describe as a fully fledged pop band would be the Beach Boys, even though they obviously had their own rock influences too. To my ears, the Beatles leaned more towards rock overall, but they were never afraid to embrace pop songwriting when it suited the song. I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive anyway. You can be a rock band and still make pop music.

What do you think? Do you consider the Beatles primarily a rock band, a pop band, or a combination of both? And why do you think some rock fans seem so uncomfortable with the idea of calling them pop?

Opinion I feel so sorry for John

It's only today that I read more about John Lennon's last days and details of his tragic death. Man, I'm shook to the core. For two reasons really. First, I'm extremely sorry for his loved ones, Sean, Julian, Yoko, Cynthia, Paul, and others. It must've been a torment to live through this while being a public person.

Second, I've just realized how bad it was. How wrong. How his killer approached him twice and even admitted later that John treated him with respect. And did it with cold blood, and then waited for the police. No purpose, no excuses. Just messed up.

What a waste, what a tragedy. It just hit me differently. That is all.

Emerson Fittipaldi, one of George's best friends tells a story that George converted to Christianity before his death. I find it weird because George was a devoted Hare Krishna for more than 30 years at that point. Do we believe Emerson or not?

Sgt peppers lonely hearts club band. We have with a little help from my friends an absolute classic. And ringos drumming on a day in the life is his best on any song, also even in weaker songs ringos drumming saves it. I think he is the face of this album for sure with his drumming performances he cooks on every song. And with a little help from my friends man one of the best on this album. Ringos drumming tells the story its so good!

Discussion Thoughts on Yoko's discography?

She has quite an extensive catalog of albums, but I've never listened to anything except Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band and albums with John. Are there any albums worth listening to? Or maybe her entire discography is pretty good? I want to listen to everything related to Yoko's music.

Question Beatles In Mono: Difference between the 2009 Beatles In Mono CD Box Set vs Mono in Deluxe Sets?

I know this was asked here a few months ago but now that Rubber Soul has been out with the Mono mixes included... Can anyone confirm if there's a difference in the Mono mixes found in the Deluxe Editions (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper) and the 2009 Beatles In Mono CD Boxset?

Is one louder than the other? Is one more faithful?

Genuinely curious because I would love to own that CD Boxset (very expensive I know) but I was also wondering if I should just buy the Super Deluxe CDs of the mentioned albums above and hope that future Remix Boxsets are made and include their original Mono mixes.

Thanks everyone

Discussion Idea for Movies I Had With my Roommate

I was telling her how I felt like the only person who’s seen Yesterday and eventually we came up with the rest of the trilogy

Tomorrow- sequel to Yesterday where John Lennon doesn’t join the Beatles and becomes an evil dictator(Hitler2), so Yesterday guy goes back in time (sacrificing his fame) to be sure The Beatles form so John Lennon gets shot

Today- pre sequel meta biopic that ends as a modern American drama where Mark David Chapman never kills John Lennon and gets his life together, growing as a person and dying after a full life. End credits are John Lennon getting shot anyway

They recorded on April 14, 1969 (2:30 PM to 9:00 PM), with mixing finished later that night. John and Paul played all the instruments on the track. Eleven takes were recorded, with take #10 used as the master. Overdubs were added the same day.

George was house-hunting, and Ringo was away filming The Magic Christian

Photo #6: John arranged to have a double bed brought in so that Yoko could rest comfortably while recovering from a car accident in Scotland

The single was released on May 30, 1969, as a non-album single, becoming the Beatles' 17th UK #1 hit and charted #8 in the U.S.
