Community Identifying a record or seeing how much it's worth? Use DISCOGS.COM

https://www.discogs.com/

Some people have asked for a post like this to be stickied in the sub because we constantly get people asking what a record is worth or what version they have.

You need to match the matrix information. Which is the part of the record between the music/grooves and the label. There will be etched and/or stamped letters, symbols and numbers. You can just do a search for the artist and album name with the matrix info typed in. After searching, it should pull up all albums that match. If there’s more than one, you will have to figure out which it is by checking under the barcode and other identifiers section.

You also may need to look at info on the vinyl label and the sleeve. There will sometimes be additional info under the notes section.

Please check out r/discogs if you need more help searching but READ THEIR RULES.

Question What's a common Beatles myth or misconception that you wish people would stop repeating?

Between decades of rock journalism, casual documentaries, and word of mouth, there are so many myths that get passed around as fact.. like Yoko single-handedly breaking up the band, or the idea that Ringo was just along for the ride rhythmically. What's a piece of Beatles lore or narrative that drives you crazy when you see people post it as a gospel?

Discussion Has there ever been discussion on Paul McCartney's deep note in Let it Be, does he use that voice in other songs?

Post image

For the whole song Paul sings in a very high voice but for the chorus the first "Let it be" he uses a deep, rich voice. It almost doesn't sound like him. Have you noticed this and does he use that style in any other of his songs?

Collection My First Vinyl Haul! $25 Total

Post image

Yesterday I went to my local record store, and it was the first time I'd gone in seriously with the intent to buy.

Naturally, I go look for what Beatles albums they had. All they had under "Beatles" was Pete Best. I ended up finding the only Wings record, and the only McCartney record they had in the store.

As I was checking out, I asked the cashier if Beatles records always go pretty quickly, and he said they do, but that there was a White Album in "New Arrivals." He was kind enough to go and get it for me. I told him it was my first time buying records. "Welcome to the addiction," he said with a smile.

I will be going back.

TIL Fun fact: Paul McCartney sings on every single song on Abbey Road — all 17 of them!

There is SOME debate about Polythene Pam, but I hear him in my opinion.

  1. Come Together: Those really low harmonizing bits with John (ex: “Coca Cola”, “Monkey Finger”)

  2. Something: Harmonizes with George at parts, and sings a very buried singalong to George’s guitar solo.

  3. Maxwells Silver Hammer: Sings lead, of course, and harmonizes.

  4. Oh! Darling: Sings lead and backing.

  5. Octopus’s Garden: Harmonizes with George and Ringo at parts, and sings backing (“Ahh”, “Lies beneath the ocean waves”) with George.

  6. I Want You (She’s So Heavy): Harmonizes with John and George at points, and sings the first “Heavy” when they all 3 take turns singing it.

  7. Here Comes the Sun: Sings backing vocals (“Sun Sun Sun…”)

  8. Because: Sings lead harmony with John and George, in the High register (and triple-tracked).

  9. You Never Give Me Your Money: Sings lead and backing, using different styles of voice.

  10. Sun King: Same as Because, and also sings backing.

  11. Mean Mr. Mustard: Sings harmony vocals.

  12. Polythene Pam: Some debate, as I mentioned, but many sources credit him with backing vocals, and I would heavily agree. He does the “ahh, ahh, ahh”s with George.

  13. She Came In Through The Bathroom Window: Sings lead

  14. Golden Slumbers: Sings lead, is the only Beatle that sings on the track.

  15. Carry That Weight: Sings lead on the bridge section, and harmonizes with the other 3 (2?) on the main chorus (“BOOOY YOURE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT!”)

  16. The End: Sings Lead (“Oh yeah! All right!”, and “And in the end…”. Harmonizes with George and John as well.

  17. Her Majesty: Sings lead, is the only Beatle that sings on the track.

Fairly certain this is the only album where a single Beatle sings on every single track.

Opinion Your Mother Should Know

Probably a crazy hot take. I don't have a single favorite Beatles track, as I believe their music was really different for each era and I have different favorite tracks in different eras. But for the colorful-psychedelic one during '67, YMSK is one of my favorite. And I truly think it's a good song.

Like, people trash it as repetitive but, no? I don't think it's repetitive that much, and if it is then many other Beatles tracks also are. Also I like the song's dreamy feeling created by the melody itself, instruments and especially the ghostly backing vocals.

Opinion I think the Let It Be interludes actually have charm

I don't get why people don't like that those are on there. I think interludes are a good way to break up some albums and people do it a lot today. I don't see why it was such a controversial choice to leave those in there.

Discussion I listened to all their albums in a day, now I want to make sub-playlists

So I’ve had a full on day working today and I decided to get my head down and Beatles music can be good background for me without being distracting. So I played the albums out from Please Please Me through to Abbey Road (I’ve gone on recording timeline not release).

What a ride! From ‘I saw her standing there’ to ‘Her Majesty’ via all the other genres, and all in 7 years.
It’s just driven home once again how much they did in such a short time. All the meanders and weird turns in songs and albums and genres

So if you hd 12 songs to make an album, and each album was a different theme or genre, what would be your track listing. Have put some sub genres/themes below.

E.g
Beatles Hard Rock
Beatles Pop
Beatles Psychedelic
Beatles Harmonies
Beatles Whimsy
Beatles Funny
Beatles Dark
Beatles Rock and Roll

So many different playlists you can do.

Discussion John Lennon's Contributions In The Later Years (1967-1969)

There was a recent discussion here asking what changes we'd make to Sgt. Pepper and I responded with having John contribute a couple more tracks.

We all know Paul took charge of the band in the later years and while I do love Paul for keeping it all together... I really wish John wasn't so checked out during this period. Sgt. Pepper was Paul's baby and while Lennon is sprinkled throughout the album, it's the first album of the band where Paul wrote more songs than John. That's repeated on Magical Mystery Tour as well.

Yes John does bounce back on The White Album and they have an almost equal amount of songs... But then he checks out again during the Get Back/ Let It Be and Abbey Road sessions. I understand his mind was elsewhere and he does contribute some of my favorite songs from the band at the time... He's definitely taking a back seat to Paul.

And it doesn't help that Don't Let Me Down was not included in the Let It Be album. I honestly believe that album suffers with its absence among other things.

There was only so much Paul could do to have John wake up a bit and I'm thankful Paul was able to keep the band going for as long as they did. But man when you're listening to their discography in order and Lennon's presence sort of diminishes little by little, it's kinda sad.

I don't mean to make it sound like he's barely in these albums, but he's just not in them as much as he was in the earlier to mid point of their career.

Apologies for the long post!

Discussion The Beatles were really good at making songs that sound happy but have slightly depressing lyrics

I've always found it interesting how often the Beatles paired cheerful, catchy melodies with lyrics that are actually pretty sad, insecure, or desperate.

"You're Going to Lose That Girl" sounds upbeat and confident, but there's something almost threatening about the narrator's determination. "I'll Follow the Sun" is a lovely, gentle song, but it's essentially about leaving someone behind. "For No One" has a beautiful, almost casual melody for a song about a relationship falling apart. And "Getting Better" sounds incredibly optimistic until you pay attention to the lyrics about the narrator's past behavior.

I think this contrast is part of what makes their songwriting so effective. You can enjoy the melody for years before suddenly realizing how bleak the song actually is.

What's another Beatles song where the music and lyrics seem to tell two completely different stories?

Discussion Help! isn't exactly a happiness album

Has anyone else noticed how, with one exception, all the band-written songs on the 'Help!' album are kinda downers? Like none of them are 100% happy about love or the singer's situation? Another Girl has Paul talking about how excited he is about his new love - but his words are directed to the old love that he is dumping! Not a happy occasion for everyone. It's Only Love has John sounding ambivalent: "It's only love and that is all, but it's so hard loving you." Plus they fight every night, which sounds like George's problem in You Like Me Too Much. The Night Before, I Need You, Ticket to Ride, etc are pretty self-explanatory. I've Just Seen A Face is the one bright spot in all this. (Remember, I said "band-written" songs, so Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Act Naturally don't count, even though Ringo's tune isn't exactly joyful.) I even tried bringing in the other songs recorded in that era to no avail - If You've Got Trouble, That Means A Lot, Yes It Is, and I'm Down all have a dark edge to them to one extent or another. Comments, please.

Musically it’s amazing. I never appreciated its beauty until I covered it.

Discussion A trivia observation that blew my mind: Ringo Starr plays drums on almost every Beatles song, but he only played a drum solo ONCE across their entire discography.

It’s easy to forget because his timing, feel, and fill choices define so much of the band's catalog, but Ringo famously loathed drum solos. He had to be coaxed by the rest of the band into playing the 16-bar break on "The End" on Abbey Road (and even then, it's understated and deeply musical rather than flashy).

Are there any other iconic Beatles discography "singularities"—things that happened literally only once in their official studio recordings?

Discussion Why do you think Revolver was so underrated on the Red and Blue compilations?

Post image
34 Upvotes

There are only two songs from the album, and one of them is “Yellow Submarine” (perhaps the song on the album that feels least like Revolver). On top of that, I feel like it belongs more on the Blue compilation than on the Red one.

To me, it’s the band’s best album. wasn’t it appreciated as much back then?

Discussion You know how Paul's nicknamed "Macca"? I learned the other day that football legend Wayne Rooney, another scouser, is similarly nicknamed "Wazza" and Paul Gascoigne is also referred to as "Gazza". Are there any other examples of this? I'm kind of obsessed lol.

Discussion What’s a Beatles song you think deserves more love than it gets?

Everyone has their favorite Beatles songs, but I'm curious about the ones that don't get mentioned as often. Not necessarily the biggest hits, just songs you think are genuinely great and wish more people appreciated.

For me, some of the lesser-discussed tracks can be just as interesting as their famous ones, especially when you pay attention to the songwriting and little details in the arrangement.

What song would you pick, and what makes it special to you? Bonus points if it's one you think gets overlooked even by longtime fans.

Question Questions about the Sgt Pepper outfits

Post image
38 Upvotes

These costumes are arguably the most famous outfits the Beatles ever worn (even more than their grey collarless Beatlemania suits), but I have a few questions that I have never gotten straight answers to:

* Who designed them? I have heard different names but was it ever confirmed who did it?

* Why do George and Ringo have hats but not John and Paul? Was that an intentional design choice or were hats made for the latter two and they rejected them? If the latter, do we have any photos of the unused hats?

* We see a bit of Paul and George’s Sgt Pepper shoes in the Hello, Goodbye music video, but do we have any close up or museum photos of all of them including John and Ringo’s?

Other I Had A Dream Last Night About The Beatles

I have had dreams about John before and meeting The Rolling Stones, but in this dream, it was an alternative circa 1967 in which they decided to keep touring and were performing at a small venue in Britain. Brian Epstein had just died, and John took the microphone to use the opportunity about not just how much he appreciated him, but took a minute to tell each of the members what he liked best about them to the group, as the crowd started to walk in.

John said that Ringo was the funniest guy to be around and always made their songs complete. George had a wry sense of humor but was, and I quote, "The Great Guitarist he knew, and Eric Clpaton agrees" as well as "the best person to bring his songs to life." As for Paul, he took a moment to say how he was his "musical partner" and that their rivalry is what keeps him going (lol).

Ringo responded "Let's here it for John, let's hear about him." George then steps up and read a quote from "In His Own Write" and John responded "I never knew you actually read that." And George responded he was always inspired by his words.

Then the crowd was full and they started playing Helter Skelter (which I know wouldn't have been written until 1968) and Revolution.

I know I was dreaming because our lads were really nice to each other. I guess subconsciously I believe had they told each other how they valued one another they would have stayed together.

Discussion Am I certifiably insane for listening to this song like five times a day or so at the very least?

Post image
44 Upvotes

I know I made a post about this a month or so ago when I discovered it, but I just can’t shake it off man. Think I can confidently say it’s my favorite solo Ringo song (and yes, I know Paul wrote it).

So damn good. So damn catchy. Ringo sounds great. Messaging is phenomenal. And the Paul intro at the end is the cherry on top.
