ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

Are poll greeters always this aggressive here?

• Upvotes

First time voting in Austin and I was talking to a candidate I am interested in voting for. As we are talking this unkempt looking fellow rudely interrupted our conversation yelling "she's a corporate shill and my candidate is the only DSA endorsed candidate!" I walked away to avoid him and he literally is now yelling at me from across the parking lot to vote for his candidate. I complained to the election people but left so don't know if they did anything. It is my first time voting in Austin and I'm wondering if it's always like this?

I moved to Austin in feb from houston and didn't update my voter registration to travis county. I know I can't vote for county related stuff, but can I still vote for the state officials?

Has anyone hired a senior move manager for their parents? Worth it?

We are trying to figure out how to make my parents move less overwhelming and the amount of stuff they have collected over the years is honestly a lot. Sorting, deciding what to keep, donating things, packing everything and then setting up new place sounds like a whole new project on its own.
I recently came across senior move managers who help with all of this.
Has anyone used one in Austin? Was it worth the money or did you manage to handle everything as a family?

Anyone know a watchmaker in Austin who can remove an engraved H from a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso? Would polishing or laser removal be the better option? Looking for recommendations. Thanks!

Goods & Services Anyone renting out a space?

Hi all!

My husband is an artist looking for a garage space to work out of. Anyone around Leander/cedar park area have a garage they’re willing to rent out? He’d be quiet and he’s unproblematic. He’s been renting a spot for 5 years and could get good references. We recently had a kid so now he’s looking for a more affordable and closer spot. If not a garage, we’re willing to hear other options as well.

Preferably 250+ square feet. Willing to pay $400 a month and can pay in cash if you’d like.

Help! good affordable storage unit options in central austin?

hi everyone!

i’ve lived here my whole life (except for college) but i don’t know much about the storage unit market. when i moved back from college, i got a unit with public storage and through the years, they’ve raised my unit pricing so much.

bc of it being such a huge task + my adhd, i’ve just been eating the cost but now i want to go through it, downsize, and get a new unit closer to where i live now (near ut campus/hyde park area or close to there).

i’m looking for an indoor climate unit with a company that’s known for being clean, affordable, and secure. i don’t want to just get stuck with another company like public storage that will give me a good price at first only to raise it a few months later and continue to do it. i also always love supporting more local/small businesses so that’s a plus but not required.

can anyone give me some good recommendations? i’m hoping not every storage place out here does the same rent raises i’ve experienced :/

thanks y’all! all advice is appreciated :) 🫶🏻

Testing concept — “no buy/budget room makeovers”

I found interior decorating as something I would love to pursue as my second life career. I have redone every room in my house, staged houses for sale/rent, and helped friends with decorating their spaces but not in a professional capacity. I don’t have any certifications, etc and am generally terrified of putting myself out there on social media (Reddit feels like a safer space).

I believe I’m really good at assessing spaces and improving them with small tweaks like layout/furniture changes, small and budget friendly buys to enhance the overall look, feel and function of the space. I love the idea of making someone feel great in their space without breaking the bank.

Would you be interested if someone offered such a service? If there is interest for it, I am open to offering a couple of free “no buy” room makeovers here in town.

Has Anyone Taken Legal Action Against a West Campus Apartment? Need help with legal advice or lawyer referrals(URGENT PLEASE HELP)

Hi yall,

I'm currently dealing with a serious landlord-tenant dispute involving a West Campus apartment, and I'm having a really difficult time finding affordable legal assistance

I've looked into UT Legal Services for Students, but they're currently not accepting consultations.

I've also reached out to a few private attorneys, but I'm struggling to find someone who handles tenant-side disputes before a lawsuit has been filed, especially at a rate that's manageable for a college student.

The situation is pretty urgent, so I'm hoping to find someone who could at least review my lease and advise me on my options.

Does anyone have recommendations for:

- Affordable landlord-tenant attorneys in Austin or Travis County who represent tenants?

- Attorneys who offer free or low-cost consultations or limited-scope legal assistance?

- Local legal aid organizations or other resources for UT students?

- Anyone who has dealt with a similar dispute involving a West Campus apartment?

I'd really appreciate any recommendations or advice on where to look. Thank you so much!

Goods & Services Need to dispose of two empty printer toner cartridges

For each toner cartridge, Office Depot gives a $2 store credit that's good for only one month. I don't buy office supplies very often. Is there a better offer around, either getting me more money, or going for a good cause?

Moving Vineyard wine tasting

It’s my fiancées birthday and we are taking a short trip to Austin to feel it out to move there. We live in dallas currently and want to be somewhere with more access to nature and water.

Can anyone share their experiences with vineyards in the area they recommend (or don’t)? She has always wanted to go to one so this seems like a good opportunity.

Bonus if you have recommendations for apartments to check out with easy access to nature.

Thanks in advance!

The break up is not my choice at all, no big betrayal on my end, early 30s, have kids, my whole life is changing way too fast and Im at a breaking point. Always had terrible luck, usually find therapists that just dont feel like they give as shit. Do have insurance atm, but wont last. Im in the Pflugerville/RR/Hutto and desperately need the communities suggestions. Ty in advance. 😞

Visiting Anyone down for a drink & comedy tonight (40M visiting from Finland)

Hey Austin! I’m a singer from Finland, currently here on tour, and tonight is my night off!

I’m planning to catch the Buzzkill Comedy show at The Buzz Mill (Riverside) tonight at 9:00 PM.

I’m flying solo and would love to find a comedy buddy or a small group to join me. Platonic vibes, open to hanging out with anyone (male/female/all) cause it’s more fun that way!

Drop a comment or send me a DM if you're down to hang out. Cheers!

Is there a serious dating scene in Austin?

Hey, mostly trying to get to the bottom of reality vs stereotypes. A lot of people say Austin is a transient city with partying/casual being big there with people not wanting to miss out on the next big thing. Is that to say that the serious scene is very small? Or do you think it’s just more quietly there? Any thoughts + opinions welcome. Thx!

Moving Anyone else dealing with extensive Amazon delivery issues?

I’m redoing a couple rooms in the house / deep cleaning and ordered quite a few things. Like 25-30 separate items many grouped together as same day, overnight and some more miscellaneous next day. Of the 6 separate orders I made over the past week, 1 has arrived on time. Everything else delayed to the following day at the least or is just sitting not moving now. It’s beyond frustrating

Best way to find space to rent?

I need to rent a room that can hold ten people for a few hours and I can't think of any places that might work for that besides the library. I know some breweries have tap rooms but I'm not really interested in setting up at a place that sells booze as a person who doesn't drink at all. I considered an airbnb but I need the time in the afternoon and most don't have check in until at least 3, and having ten different cars would probably be an issue. Suggestions anyone?

Any French speakers or Europeans in Austin down for drinks?

French guy in my late 20s, here for a month. Looking to meet some French speakers, Europeans, or whoever's up for grabbing a few beers, going out and talking about anything and everything. Nothing organized or formal, just hanging out and having a good time.

Health & Wellness Allergy Shots

I'd like to find somebody competent and kind for allergy shots. I've done the drops but the idea that they're going to take 3 years to actually work seems silly to me. Plus, at the previous place I was going to, I felt like I was just being managed for money with no real stake in the outcome. The drops just never worked and the provider just never really cared.
