I'm 23 and a senior in college, and I'm honestly exhausted with how life works. Sometimes I genuinely feel like an alien living on this planet because I don't understand how everyone seems so okay with spending most of their lives working.
Before anyone calls me lazy, I've worked physical labor jobs with 60-hour workweeks before. I know what it's like to come home exhausted, barely have time to enjoy anything, go to sleep, and wake up just to do it all over again. College is definitely better than that, but even now, I can't stand the thought of doing this for the rest of my life.
It feels like everything revolves around being productive. Go to school, get good grades, get a degree, find a job, work five days a week, pay bills, and repeat until retirement. Are we really supposed to be happy living like this?
I don't want to be rich. I don't need a massive house, an expensive car, or some luxurious lifestyle. I just want to enjoy being alive. I want to wake up excited about my day instead of dreading everything I have to do. I want time for hobbies, friends, relationships, and experiences without constantly feeling like I should be doing something more productive.
The loneliness makes it even worse. I've always struggled to make friends, and the few I do have are almost always busy. Everyone is working, studying, or dealing with responsibilities. Sometimes I just want someone to hang out with or play games with, but it feels like nobody has time anymore.
Video games are honestly one of the only things that consistently make me happy. I love improving at something because I actually want to, exploring different worlds, competing, and having fun. For once, I feel like I'm doing something for myself instead of because society expects me to. I just wish I had more people to enjoy those experiences with.
What frustrates me most is how everyone seems to accept this as normal.
Why do we need to work five days a week? Why is 40+ hours considered the standard? With all the technology and advancements we've made, shouldn't we be working toward giving people more free time? I genuinely think three- or four-day workweeks could be realistic for many jobs.
I'm not saying nobody should work. I understand that society needs people contributing. But why does contributing have to take up so much of our lives?
Why do we constantly need bigger cities, more buildings, more businesses, and endless economic growth? When is it enough? We're always trying to make everything bigger and more productive, but is any of it actually making us happier?
Sometimes it feels like humanity created this enormous system that we're all forced to keep running, even if it makes us miserable.
And whenever I express these feelings, I feel like nobody understands. People just say things like "that's life," "welcome to adulthood," or "stop being lazy."
But why is "that's life" a good enough answer? Why should we just accept something because it's always been that way?
I'm getting close to graduating college, and instead of being excited, I'm honestly terrified. I've spent years working toward my degree, and now it feels like I'm just preparing to enter another version of the same prison. Except this time, there's no graduation waiting at the end. Just decades of working.
I know this probably sounds dramatic, but I genuinely want to enjoy life. I want friends, adventures, memories, and things to look forward to. I don't want to spend most of my existence wishing I could fast-forward to the weekend.
I don't hate working hard. I hate feeling like my entire life is one obligation after another.
Does anyone else feel this way? Not just occasionally hating their job or wishing the weekend were longer, but genuinely feeling disconnected from how society expects us to live?
Because sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who looks at all of this and wonders why we're okay with it.
