Discussion How are you guys assessing analyst candidates these days?

Analytics manager here, and hiring feels broken right now. Take-homes are unpaid work, so good candidates often skip them, and the ones who do them can just run it through AI. I end up with a polished answer and no clue how they got there. Live cases are better, but they eat an hour of my time per person, and they mostly reward whoever talks well under pressure.
SQL barely matters anymore. I just want to know if someone can take a messy business problem, ask the right questions, and figure out what to do with it.
What's actually working for you? Candidates, what kind of assessment feels fair to you?
