Megathread: Is my Zippo real?

There are a lot of fakes out there. If you are unsure of the legitimacy of your lighter, post your photos and questions here.

If you are new to Zippo collecting or ownership, be sure to include a photo of the bottom of the lighter as well as the insert.

Show and Tell Keychain Fuel Canister

Post image

Just got my third one in today I got on a deal. You can clearly see the age of each lol. The first one has been dropped many times on asphalt over about 3 years.

I can't recommend these enough, however, I'd change one thing: the little tiny ring that everything is connected to is very weak and will break.

The keychain flint holder is great on its own if you have a butane insert. It's nice to have these stashed around as they're about one fill-up.

Show and Tell Vietnam Zippo 4080th SW

Hi!
Long time lurker and this is my first post here.
I have been collecting Vietnam-zippos for a while and wanted to post this is one from my collection. It’s a curious one with the name and service number engraved. I’ve searched high and low but have not been able to find info on the original owner.

The Zippo was made in 1958. The 4080th operated U-2 high-altitude aircraft and flew highly classified missions over North Vietnam and China early in the Vietnam War. OL-11 (Operating Location) was at RAAF Laverton, Australia, and OL-20 at Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam.

It was found with a matching combined cigarette/zippo case with the text Vietnam-Saigon.

Advice/Help After doing a little digging I learned that zippo apparently experimented with solid foam fuel cells in the late 1960s. Is this what I have found in this 1968 zippo I picked up today?

Rose gold Armour. Just finished my first cigarette. Better than I expected.

I presume it is real, since all "tale tale" signs seem to point to it being authentic.

Show and Tell Disappointed with these replicas

Post image

I’m a collector of lighters.
Over the years I’ve owned different brands, expensive, cheap, knockoffs and so one, but I’ve always had a soft spot for zippos.
I don’t bulk buy, I like to find them on sales or flea markets.

This time I wanted to give it a go to the 1935 and 1941 replicas that you can buy in Amazon. I bought both because I couldn’t pick one. So decided to get them and return the one I liked less. The 1941 one is the black ice version, the 1935 just the standard one.

Turns out I’ll be returning both.

It has nothing to do with the function of the lighter itself but I feel like the finish on the metal case it’s extremely poor. I don’t know if it has something to do with the materials used or the metal brushing tools, but they both have a really mass produced nasty feeling to the touch that none of my other zippos have. Both are 2025 makes.

Perhaps I’m getting too picky with time, but what do you think? Am I the only one feeling this way?

First time opening it and the gem eye burst off so I thought I should check the rest of the lighter and there was a scratch at the bottom too, returning to Amazon for a refund but are the Zippos with these gem like decorations prone to just instantly coming off?

Is it unusual for Zippo to send free stickers internationally?

I found a pristine, unfired January 1990 Zippo at my grandpa's place, still in its original box with a 36 year old insert advertising a collector's guide.

I emailed Zippo mostly as a joke, sharing some pictures and asking if they happened to still have the guide. They said it was discontinued but offered to send me some stickers instead. I accepted, gave them my address in Serbia, and they confirmed that the stickers were being processed for mailing.

I'm not complaining whatsoever, was just curious whether it's normal for Zippo to send little gifts internationally through customer service, or whether this is an uncommon thing.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Chard Wick

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey, fellas. I’m a new(ish) Zippo owner. For some odd reason, my wick keeps charring real fast. Heck, I pulled the wick up and chopped off the char roughly 3 or 4 days ago and it’s already black. The fluid I’m using is Ronsonol (hardware store didn’t have anything else) and I use the lighter frequently I also haven’t repacked the insert yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Advice/Help About packing

I been using Zippos for a long time and never really realized that there where discussion groups and collectors on social media...

Now, since I discovered this reddit, I keep seeing suggestion to pack the inserts in "S" etc... Even from original Zippo source (I never knew that)... I always packed mine straight down following the chimney and curled the excess of wick in a loop covering the bottom on top of the felt, the wick must not touch the casing, only the cotton dead center.

Now I tried 4 times to do the "S" method on different brand new inserts... And kinda not sure... But it took more fuel to work and got frequent vapor locks and as soon as it was reaching the point the vapor locks stops it was a matter of hours before it got low on fuel... Not really liked it.

I repacked that insert straight last Sunday I'm at day 5 at nearly no vapor locks and not going low on fuel yet (back to operaion I was used to). In addition to have used less to fill.

Now the question:

Are you guys pack them religiously Like Zippo says, or you have your own method ?

Try a straight pack !?! And tell us what you think ! I'm genuinely curious because the "S" doesn't work well at all for me.

Yoshitaka Amano F2-049 "Red Sword" – Japanese Armor with relief work

Japanese release Yoshitaka Amano Zippo, F2-049 "Red Sword", on an Armor case. Bottom stamp on mine is H 21 (August 2021).

The art covers three sides, so the character continues around both edges and the red sword cuts straight across the case. Under the print there's raised relief and etching, so you can actually feel the detail, and the silver has that darkened antique (ibushi) finish. The back is just Amano's signature in gold and the © YOSHITAKA AMANO mark.

Japanese box with the Zippo hologram sticker and the Japanese repair guarantee card.

Anyone else collecting the Amano series? Which ones do you have?
