I'm happy to discuss or debate the use of AI with anyone that supports or encourages the use of it. What I do not tolerate is copy-pasting AI slop answers without taking even a moment to verify that the answer is correct.
This thread was prompted by a recent interaction that started with a hilariously wrong identification that could have been avoided if the original commenter took all of two seconds to use his eyes to verify. It ended with AI techbro nonsense about "people who are too scared to use computers". Like I said, I'm happy to debate this with anyone as long as it's in good faith, but if you refuse to counter or even acknowledge the points in the discussion then it's pointless.
AI is a useful tool, but it is still just a tool. Most of us grew up being told that wikipedia is not a valid source because it can be edited by anyone. AI is no different, but AI is guaranteed to have vacuumed up all the wrong answers alongside the right answers and so requires verification EVERY TIME. I have no problem with anyone that chooses to use AI for their own personal reasons. There is the moral/ethical/resource debate behind it, but that belongs in a different subreddit.
This is not the first time I've had this debate with people copy-pasting AI summaries or identifications. A few times it has been harmless, an older collector that put a bit too much faith in a new technology, and it ended amicably. Unfortunately the majority of interactions end with a techbro insisting that AI is ALWAYS right, we just aren't "using it right". As far as I'm concerned, it won't be "right" if you can't ask it a question in plain English and have it understand context and intention. They'll insist you're using the wrong AI, or using the wrong "syntax" when asking your questions - In other words, you need to know how to guide and lead it to the correct answer, which typically means you already know the correct answer.
I ended that discussion with what I feel is a valid argument. It would take me 5 minutes to use AI to code a bot that would instantly and automatically answer every question in this subreddit with what it believes is the correct answer. That is not what this subreddit is for. This subreddit is for the human passion and enthusiasm for this hobby, for the experts obsessed with the little details, the niche facts, and just pure discussion. Talking with other people that share that passion, making connections and discoveries together. Sure, a lot of the questions posted here can be answered quickly, but the real nerds come out when there's historical discussion to be had.
There is no place for "This has a chance to be the right answer but I can't be bothered to take 5 seconds to check". Anybody that makes a habit of providing these vague or incorrect answers will be banned because they are not going to contribute anything useful. Anybody that tries to defend an obvious falsehood because "AI told me so" will be banned.
Anybody posting images that are obviously AI generated or "enhanced" will be banned. This hasn't been an issue here yet, but it has become a major issue on Ebay and other retailers, with sellers using "enhanced" images to show how a lighter could look if it were in perfect condition - And usually the AI doesn't understand the mechanics of the lighter and puts the flame in the wrong spot. It's pure slop.
Like I said, I'm still happy to discuss it, but this is not the first time I've tried debating the AI slop bros. It always ends the same way.
I will leave this thread open for discussion, but I will be keeping a close eye to ensure it doesn't get too rowdy.

Recently there are some people who want help finding out what their lighter looks like, but only take one photo of the front. This is not very effective, and it will only make it a lot harder for us to help you.
Here is a guide on what photos you should take of your lighter. if the guide is not clear enough, please let me know and i can make some adjustments.
reposted due to spelling issues in the title.

This has been in my collection for about a year or so. It was pretty grimy but cleaned up really well. The inside took a long time (understatement) to clean out without damaging anything. Everything unscrews, turns, and pumps. i’m unsure if the pump works though. And imagine one of the seals is dried up. I don’t really want to put fluid in it and just use it as a decor piece currently. That might change in the future. I thought some of you might like to see this, so I decided to post it here. Sorry for the bad photos, it was difficult to not get a glare.

Hi all,
I recently picked up this lighter from a flea market about a week or so ago, and was wondering if there was anyway I could get it to work again. As of now, it does not light and the button only works.
I was wondering if someone who is knowledgeable about these kinds of lighters would be able to tell me how to possibly even get it back to working condition. I have attached pictures of it to this thread. I was told it is also supposed to play a song of some sort.

I was gifted this lighter from Russia about a decade ago. I recently tried to light it and it was hard to spin the spark wheel, then a small piece popped out and it will no longer light. When the lid is open, I can hear gas coming out but I spin the wheel (which no longer has resistance) and nothing happens. How can I troubleshoot the issue? Or if someone things they know what the issue is, how can it be repaired?

I find them absolutely mesmerising and would love to have one of those, but IDK where to buy one, it doesn't have to be a vintage one, just this style.

Ho trovato questo accendino e non avrei idea di che è.
Non trovo neanche una pietrina che entri nella fessura.
Qualcuno può aiutarmi??

Hi! Recently got this from a flee market, got it a new flint and gas, but the flame is irregular, with a lot of strength despite having the meter at its lowest.
I think is missing a cap underneath, but haven't been able to find any info

I seem to have de rusted all the parts and have managed to get spark on the first lighter but it doesn’t always catch with the plunger.

I bought it at an antique store 5 months ago and I've tried looking it up and I can't find anything super close. On the bottom of it, it says penguin Avant Japan

Hi everyone,
For the past few months I’ve been building Keepzer: collection software made by a collector, for collectors.
The tools I tried were slow, clunky or too rigid. Whether you collect lighters, watches, coins, toys or something nobody’s heard of, I figured I wasn’t the only one. So I built what I was missing.
What already works:
Coming next: a date decoder (Zippo, Case, Buck, later Victorinox), a social side to share pieces and follow collectors, and maybe a shared knowledge base.
Keepzer will be free, and I need your input before and after launch. What do you collect, what frustrates you about tracking it, and what would make you switch? Want to be an early tester? Let me know.
Follow along (free) on Substack 👉 https://keepzer.substack.com, or just send me a message. Every idea gets read, and plenty will end up in Keepzer.

I got this lighter in a lighter hall from eBay and it came in a nesor box, but it has no markings on it so I’m quite unsure

I recently bought two old Robson lighters for restoration. One is in a bit worse of a condition than I thought and the other just needs a new wick, flint and maybe a flint spring. For the first three photos is the first lighter and the last photo is the second one. The first lighter. I’m not what the second hole in the bottom is for as the first hole is already for the flint. It appears to be blocked by something. Aswell as the top of the lighter having the main flint in the middle and the button hole on the right. What is the part on the left of the lighter. For the second lighter. The flint hole at the bottom seems to be obscured. I plan to dissasemble the second lighter to figure out what needs fixing but any help/tips would be greatly appreciated
