DISCUSSION : An announcement regarding the use of AI, and other subreddit updates.

I'm happy to discuss or debate the use of AI with anyone that supports or encourages the use of it. What I do not tolerate is copy-pasting AI slop answers without taking even a moment to verify that the answer is correct.

This thread was prompted by a recent interaction that started with a hilariously wrong identification that could have been avoided if the original commenter took all of two seconds to use his eyes to verify. It ended with AI techbro nonsense about "people who are too scared to use computers". Like I said, I'm happy to debate this with anyone as long as it's in good faith, but if you refuse to counter or even acknowledge the points in the discussion then it's pointless.

AI is a useful tool, but it is still just a tool. Most of us grew up being told that wikipedia is not a valid source because it can be edited by anyone. AI is no different, but AI is guaranteed to have vacuumed up all the wrong answers alongside the right answers and so requires verification EVERY TIME. I have no problem with anyone that chooses to use AI for their own personal reasons. There is the moral/ethical/resource debate behind it, but that belongs in a different subreddit.

This is not the first time I've had this debate with people copy-pasting AI summaries or identifications. A few times it has been harmless, an older collector that put a bit too much faith in a new technology, and it ended amicably. Unfortunately the majority of interactions end with a techbro insisting that AI is ALWAYS right, we just aren't "using it right". As far as I'm concerned, it won't be "right" if you can't ask it a question in plain English and have it understand context and intention. They'll insist you're using the wrong AI, or using the wrong "syntax" when asking your questions - In other words, you need to know how to guide and lead it to the correct answer, which typically means you already know the correct answer.

I ended that discussion with what I feel is a valid argument. It would take me 5 minutes to use AI to code a bot that would instantly and automatically answer every question in this subreddit with what it believes is the correct answer. That is not what this subreddit is for. This subreddit is for the human passion and enthusiasm for this hobby, for the experts obsessed with the little details, the niche facts, and just pure discussion. Talking with other people that share that passion, making connections and discoveries together. Sure, a lot of the questions posted here can be answered quickly, but the real nerds come out when there's historical discussion to be had.

There is no place for "This has a chance to be the right answer but I can't be bothered to take 5 seconds to check". Anybody that makes a habit of providing these vague or incorrect answers will be banned because they are not going to contribute anything useful. Anybody that tries to defend an obvious falsehood because "AI told me so" will be banned.

Anybody posting images that are obviously AI generated or "enhanced" will be banned. This hasn't been an issue here yet, but it has become a major issue on Ebay and other retailers, with sellers using "enhanced" images to show how a lighter could look if it were in perfect condition - And usually the AI doesn't understand the mechanics of the lighter and puts the flame in the wrong spot. It's pure slop.

Like I said, I'm still happy to discuss it, but this is not the first time I've tried debating the AI slop bros. It always ends the same way.

I will leave this thread open for discussion, but I will be keeping a close eye to ensure it doesn't get too rowdy.

Before making a post about asking for help to identify your lighter, read this!

Recently there are some people who want help finding out what their lighter looks like, but only take one photo of the front. This is not very effective, and it will only make it a lot harder for us to help you.

Here is a guide on what photos you should take of your lighter. if the guide is not clear enough, please let me know and i can make some adjustments.

reposted due to spelling issues in the title.

How do I fill my lighter???

The other day I found this lighter at a garage sale for 2 dollars, normally I stick to lighter fluid, but a Ronson for 2 dollars is hard to pass up. I know it’s butane, and I believe it’s a Varatronic, but I cannot for the life of me get it to fill, and was wondering if anybody knew what adapter I use

Help Please help what is wrong with this one

I recently bought a hadson triumph at a second hand market but once I filled it with. Butane the flame is really unpredictable and I can't seem to adjust it. The wheel to adjust the flame is also really loose and just keeps spinning without any resistance. I hope anybody knows what's wrong with it and how to fix it.

Need help on how to refill my Myon lighter

Hi everyone,
I recently got offered a Myon lighter but every time I try to refill it with butane gas, the gas seems to escape right away by the gas valve chamber.

I tried purging it from any sort of air inside but it still won’t work and I have no idea how to get it working.

I have attached a picture of the lighter and the gas adapter I’m using as I believe it to be the probable cause of the issue at this point.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!

Show&Tell New in box 1950's Japan Apollo KK miniature lift arm lighter

Additional photos below! Acquired this lovely little chrome Apollo KK lighter recently from an estate sale and was thrilled to find that it had not only never been struck but it even had the original box and paper sleeve wrapped around it and the cotton was still good to go as well. I simply brushed a little bit of corrosion off of the flint wheel and that was that.

I filled it up and then added a Kiribi flint and waited a couple hours and it lit immediately! This video here is only the second or third time actually striking it at all. I have since used a gentle nylon brush to clean in between the crevices and polished it with a jeweler's cloth and it is looking oh so fine and fresh. Best $12 I've spent in a while.

Show&Tell My favorite thrift find

I don’t know anything about vintage or collectible lighters but I got this at a thrift store a while back and forgot I had it. Found it again recently and thought all the lighter geeks might know more and appreciate this.

I was messing around with it and it wouldn’t light so I did some surface level searching and it most likely needs lighter fluid as it still sparks. Was looking for some and apparently it’s vintage (all according to the google “AI” thing so take it with a grain of salt). It’s in really good condition and I always thought it was newer so I’m pleasantly surprised.

Side-note, anyone know what fluid works with these or where one can get replacement flints?

1950(ish) Barlow Trade Mark

This is a neat one. A heavily used Barlow (Zippo copy) from right around 1950. Both the case and insert are chrome-plated brass, which is very nice. Even Zippos don’t have brass inserts. It’s the exact same size and spec as a Zippo. The cases and inserts are interchangeable, BUT! it does not have that beautiful Zippo “clink.”

This was covered in sticker adhesive and badly bent and dented when I started (I REALLY need to learn to take “before” pictures).

I had to re shape the case, insert, and chimney to get it back to spec. The hinge pin was worn away and the hinge barrels were bent out of shape. I ended up making a new hinge pin out of brass and reshaping the hinge barrels back to round.
I re-packed the insert with a new wick and cotton/rayon wadding.

It advertises Shaker Tool and Die Co with the telephone number “Brooklyn I-5300” which helps narrow down the manufacturer date to 1950 or so as that is about the time Ohio discontinued using the four digit telephone numbers. Barlow made this style of lighter from 1950-1970.

Rose gold Armour. Just finished my first cigarette. Better than I expected.

I presume it is real, since all "tale tale" signs seem to point to it being authentic.

Help Can you help me find this lighter?

For some context I’m trying to look for a vintage lighter that is similar to my great grandfather’s, I was trying to get the original looking right to give to my father as a gift but I accidentally snapped the hinge and no matter how hard I try to search on google I can’t seem to find it.
The description of the lighter:

  1. It’s a zippo style lighter but with no brand markings on the case
  2. It had a ceramic..? front and back
  3. The design on the front was an image of a cartoon lady falling out of the shower or a bath

  4. Again it’s a really old lighter and I was wondering if anyone would be able to send a link and direct me to where I can find a replacement.

  5. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Edit: More information that I can remember is that the again ceramic..? coating in only front and back and not the sides has a yellowing color, no idea if that’s how it’s supposed to look or it’s most likely just age. But the cartoon lady on the front is a suggestive image and from what I remember the lady had short brown hair and I think she was wearing a bikini which is an odd choice for shower attire but I hope this adds helpful information.

I’ll try it invent a water cooled lighter patent using this clipper as my test model maybe i can reduce heat generated so it can keep going even when the plastic is melting off so the lighter can keep on going for extra time I was inspired by the tubes at the end of the Lmg/08/15 or the maxim mg
