Rattlesnakes! What would you do?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hey Yakima! Washington Poison Center (aka poison control) here. We're working on some educational materials around rattlesnake bites-- how to prevent them, what to do if you are bit, etc. At the poison center, we treat around 30 snake bites each year. Usually bites are from rattlesnakes in the area, but sometimes it's people with pet venomous snakes.

Can you help us out by sharing what you've seen and what you think you should do if someone is bitten? Please answer these questions for us! [we got this approved by the mods, btw]

1.) Have you seen any rattlesnakes around your area? If so, where?

2.) Do you know anyone that has been bitten by a snake? Do you know if it was a venomous or nonvenomous snake? What did they do once they were bitten?

3.) What would you do if you were with someone who had been bitten by a snake?

4.) Do you own a venomous snake? If so, tell us what snake(s) you have. Have you ever been bitten?

And, so we aren't leaving you hanging with no safety tips, here's our blog from this summer on snake safety: https://www.wapc.org/insights/ready-set-sssssummer-snake-safety/

The title photo is from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Rule #1 will be tightly enforced

Rudeness levied towards users or moderators will result in at a minimum a removal of your post or comment, and at maximum may result in a ban depending on the moderators disposition in the matter, and the degree to which the rudeness is demonstrated. This includes calling people bots.

Expect bans moving forwards.

Anyone interested in starting an anti-AI/data center crafts group with me to protest data centers and support traditional arts/crafts?

I'm not sure if Yakima Valley Arts Association is still around, but if they are I'd love to collaborate with them.

Some of the ideas I have for the group:

- sit-ins to protest any sort of pro-ai/data center policies or to support anti-AI/data center legislation.

- No-AI art markets with education on how to spot potential AI products. (Been seeing a scary amount of AI products at markets these days).

- Supporting/teaching arts and crafts skills.

- Collecting old but usable art/craft supplies for people to buy or borrow.

Also to clarify what I mean by arts/crafts is literally anything that requires creative skills to make. Leather work, knitting, weaving, carpentry, painting, ceramics, sewing, sculpting, blacksmithing, you name it.

This would take a lot of time and people, but heck I'm about to be unemployed and will have all the time in the world. I already have tons of supplies like yarn, paint, fabric, beads, thread, sewing machine, knitting needles, crochet hooks, felt squares, paper, embroidery needles, etc.

Any other ideas or organizations I should reach out to please comment below!

McGuires Irish Pub. Intentional rude servers.

Tourists to Yakima need to put McGuires on The businesses to avoid in Yakima list.

I am a tourist who visited Yakima last week. Went to a business that deserves to go out of business. Rudest bartenders in Washington for sure. The guy likes to sit up and basically play with himself in front of his regular friends sitting at the bar. Talks shit to paying guests. I didn’t leave a tip. This is easily the worst bar in Yakima.

The Yakima Chamber of Commerce got a complaint about them.

I enjoyed the rest of my trip to Yakima. No way to treat a guest.

Its ironic that Amanda says she wants to protect athletes, but welcomes a man to stump for her who covered up the molestation of wrestlers at Ohio State.

Pawn Shop

Is there a respectable pawn shop in town, or maybe recommendations on which ones I should definitely not visit?

I've been trying to sell something I got after a warranty claim, and it's not moving on FB, Nextdoor, or Craigslist.

I'm new to town and still looking for work, so every dollar counts and I'm hoping to get some gas and grocery cash this week.

I already know how pawn shops work and all that, so please no disparaging or condescending comments about this decision. I'm just tryin' to survive.

Thanks in advance!

The ancient secrets of the hills around us, the Skyway and the Underground tunnels below it.

I have this theory that in ancient days, millions of years ago, there were terraces of stone that snaked around the hillsides of the valley, almost like the great wall of China, but hugging close to the steep sides of the hills rather than on top.

You can still see places where erosion hasn't ground away the terraces, these large flattish stone walls that made up the sides of the walkway. These enormous dark brown rocks are all that's left of the ancient stone sidewalk that provided comfy pedestrian travel for the long forgotten people of Earths past.

I used to walk around the selah ridge above the river and find the stones and try to imagine the walkway and who used them.

I would find other stones too that appeared to be sealed up doorways to an inner sanctum buried deep in the hill sides, not unlike the entrances to Egyptian pyramids.

I imagine the hills are full of secret chambers and maybe even some weird ancient technology that's just sitting down there, forgotten. It's been eons since anyone went down there.

I don't know how the secret store doors open, but you'll find them here and there around the hills and little trails as ever so slightly conspicuous stone faces. It's something you feel more than see.

I always wanted to find a secret entrance and go down into the ancient tunnels. Whats down there? Empty chambers? A Gundam suit? Are there *people* down there? It is a mystery.

Join the Skyway today and don't forget to bring a flashlight in case you find yourself in the Underground.
