Opportunity Vanderbilt Qualifications

Heyy, I am a prospective transfer to Vanderbilt with divorced parents. I am aware that Vanderbilt only requires financial information from the custodial parent in the application process. My mother is my custodial parent who pays all of my tuition, and her annual income is ~$100K with typical assets.

I was wondering if my situation would qualify me for the Opportunity Vanderbilt award?

How come you guys decided to leave? Do you have any regrets? What was the deciding factor? Did other schools match your fin aid package?

The Broadview at Vanderbilt is a SCAM.

I lived at Broadview from August 2025 to July 2026.

What they did

I moved out on July 22. Before that I spent ten hours deep cleaning the place, and I filmed a continuous timestamped walkthrough of the entire unit right before I handed in my keys, because I had a feeling.

A week later they hit me with a $110 charge for “Damage Charges Work Order Fees - Full Unit Cleaning.” They took my entire $100 deposit against it and billed me for the rest.

I asked for documentation. Six separate times, in writing, over a month. Specifically: the itemized statement, and the vendor invoice showing who cleaned, when, and what they cleaned. If someone actually came and cleaned my apartment, an invoice exists. It is not an unreasonable thing to ask for.

They never sent one. Not once.

What they did send was a final statement with a single line item, a blank notes field, and three blurry photos. When I asked on the phone what their documentation consisted of, the rep told me those three photos are the documentation. Then he told me the charge is final and that it does not matter what my video shows.

So to be clear: they billed me for a cleaning service, and when asked to prove a cleaning service happened, their answer is three photos of a room.

Then they explained the charge, and it is worse

On that same call I pushed one more time on the invoice. There is no invoice. There was never going to be one.

The rep told me the “Full Unit Cleaning” charge is a standard service, and that Greystar pays the vendor a flat fee per unit regardless of how much work the unit actually needs. One minute or ten hours, same fee. So there is nothing to itemize, because nothing is itemized.

Think about what that means. The $110 was not a charge for cleaning my apartment. It is a fixed turnover cost applied on the way out, and the photos were assembled afterward to justify something already headed for the statement.

It also means my ten hours of cleaning changed nothing. The charge was identical whether I scrubbed the place or left it wrecked. Worth knowing before you spend your last day in Nashville with a mop.

The rest of the year, briefly
The management treats you like you owe them for the privilege of living there and maintenance takes forever.

They do not prorate. My lease ran roughly August 12 to July 22, you cannot choose your own start or end dates, and you pay full months on both ends. So you are paying for three weeks or more that you are contractually not allowed to use.

Adding to the list:

  • Over $1,600/month for a room the size of a shoebox
  • Furniture is the cheapest I have ever seen. The closet “door” is a curtain
  • You cannot control your own thermostat. I had almost no heat most of the winter, and during the ice storm there was no heat at all
  • $100 to get back into your own apartment if you lock yourself out
  • Gym machines broken for five months. Hallways and trash rooms reek. Printers permanently out of paper

Why I am posting
If you are signing at Broadview (Please do not, if you wish to keep your mental peace) or anywhere Greystar manages: film everything. Move-in and move-out, continuous video, before you hand over keys. Keep the original file. It costs you five minutes and it is the only thing that makes a dispute winnable.

I have filed a complaint with the Tennessee Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Affairs.

And if you have been charged a vague cleaning or damage fee at Broadview and were never shown an invoice, comment or DM me. I want to know how common this is. Given that people have been posting warnings about this place for over a year, and given that they have now told me it is a flat fee applied regardless of condition, I would bet almost everyone gets it.

Basically what the title says, can’t wear anything with the old Athletics logo and goodwill/plato’s was a bust! Don’t want to drop an arm and a leg to get a few items for a school I don’t go to! Would love any recs for in and around Nashville.

Thinking about transferring Vandy 1470 SAT, submit or no?

Hi,

I'm thinking about trying to transfer to Vanderbilt for Fall of 2027. I had good Stats in Highschool and currently in college. I however had a 1470 SAT and never bother to take it again. Do you think I should submit it, go test optional, or even retake it at hoping to get a better score and improving chance in getting in?

how safe is Nashville + affordable housing recs?

Hey guys!! Incoming international grad student at Vanderbilt for spring 2027 and wanted to ask how safe Nashville actually is 😭 since i have heard some conflicting stories,
especially around Vandy and for someone who might have to walk around alone.
Also what areas are good to live in near campus? Looking for safe + affordable apartments, shared housing, or literally anywhere decent that won’t cost an arm and a leg 💀
Any areas to avoid, housing scams to watch out for, or general advice would be appreciated!! Also, is it manageable to get around without a car?

How Strict is the Staying in Dorm Policy?

I'm thinking about going to Vanderbilt, the only problem is that undergraduates are required to live in a dorm all four years, and I wanted to live at home. There's problems but I enjoy spending time with my parents and I love being with my dogs.

After the first year students can try and request to live off campus, but would they be okay with me moving back to my parents house? I live roughly ~40 minutes away.

I've seen some things about a housing shortage? So maybe I could convince them that it'd be good for them for me not to live off campus? That way other people who absolutely need a dorm can get one.

If I do have to live in a dorm, can I just actually live at home anyways? Would I get in trouble if I don't actually stay in the dorm? I'm sure they'd notice that I'm commuting to and from school everyday so would I get expelled or something? Like is that something they'd actually care about? Has anybody tried doing this?

Please no "I recommend staying in the dorm for the full college experience" as an answer.

Thank you anybody who answers!

hows premed?

hi everyone!

i'm a current senior and am looking into vanderbilt for premed. i've looked at some of their released 2024 data and scrolled through a couple posts. to all current premeds (or old ones), is there anything in particular i should know before i apply here?

also, my ultimate goal is to go to med school so getting a high gpa is pretty important. vanderbilt is a great school and im sure the classes itself are rigorous. with that said, how rigorous is it? can the difficulty be managed with a good amount of studying or are the classes going to make me want to rip my hair out from stress?

my other concern is the location; i've grown up in socal my whole life. do you guys have a lot of fun things to do in nashville?

please enlighten me with any other advice you would like to share! thank you!

Advice on Major

Hi all! I’m currently in the college application process, and I’m also in the running for a full scholarship to Vanderbilt. I was wondering, for students interested in entrepreneurship, law, and/or finance, would HOD or Economics be the better major? Also, how much support does Vanderbilt offer for students interested in these fields, particularly in terms of internships, networking, and career opportunities? I’d appreciate any insight!

Engineering Transfer

Hello, I was wondering if anyone who transferred to Vanderbilt for engineering could share their college GPA and/or stats. I feel like I don’t see as many engineering transfer students compared to other majors, so I was just genuinely wondering what GPA successful transfer students typically had. Like what would be considered a “good” or relatively competitive GPA for engineering @Vandy.

Also if anyone did transfer to Vanderbilt for engineering and would like to share their experience please feel free, I would love to hear!!

Disclaimer: I know GPA isn’t everything, and having a certain GPA doesn’t guarantee admission. I understand that many things are considered such as high school stats, extracurriculars, the college you are transferring from, etc. I was just hoping to gauge like a general range of GPAs that would put me in a competitive position.

Quiet Apartments Near Campus for Postdocs and Young Professionals

I am looking for an affordable place to rent (townhome, small house, or apartment) within a short commute of 10-15 mins by car to campus, or closer walking distance. The most important housing factor for me is not being to hear my neighbors and the building having good sound proofing installation. That is very dependent on neighbors too, but I'm hoping for a building that can help minimize the noise as I will be working long hours and taking my work home. Budget is $1800 per month on rent.

social life

Hi guys, I am considering applying to vanderbilt and i was wondering what the social life is like. I am looking for a 'work hard, play hard' attitude ideally. how involved is greek life etc. i’m an international so sorry if this makes no sense but how easy is it to get into club sports like do you have to already be good or can you just show up and learn as you go along? Also for any current students, how do you usually spend your weekend - do you go home, study, go to house parties etc. Thank you!!!

Classical languages for religious studies undergraduates

Does anyone who is attending/has attended the religious studies undergraduates program know what classical languages courses one can take? According to https://as.vanderbilt.edu/classical-religious/undergraduate/major-minor/, students of track 2 "May include up to 9 hours in relevant language study." What is the scope of the "relevant language study? Does it include CLAS courses ,or other courses?

Any help would be appreciated!

how did you approach the supplemental?

i’m a hs senior with great academics and slightly above average extracurriculars (full app in my post history), so essays are gonna be really important for my application. unfortunately, as a middle class white girl, i don’t know quite how to approach the identity essay (applying ed1 hopefully).

i’ve read that you should probably avoid talking about divorce in college essays, but it’s an aspect of my background which has influenced me to some degree.

if you got admitted without an uncommon cultural background, what did you choose to write about?

if you’re feeling really nice, tell me what you think about my current idea: with my two parents living hours away from each other, i’ve lived my whole life alternating between metropolitan and rural areas. as such, i’ve become accustomed to living and interacting closely with different cultures and ideological viewpoints, developing a capacity for engaging deeply with people of different backgrounds. i hope to bring that openmindedness to a diverse campus like vanderbilt’s, helping me to collaborate effectively with students across cultures and beliefs and build a stronger community through skills in understanding and engagement built through growing up in two completely different cultural environments.

thanks!!

Easy Class Recs (not outdated)

I'm a current junior at Vandy, majoring in econ/history! I'm taking 18 hours this semester because I came in with no college credit, and my engineering freshman-year classes don't count toward A&S. I'm at the point where I'm almost done with the degree itself, but still need extra hours, so I'm looking for easy A/low-effort classes within the College of Arts and Sciences for next semester and beyond (ideally 3 hours). I've already scoured the subreddit, but a lot of the recommendations are from years ago, professors who no longer work here, or 1-hour classes outside A&S. After this semester, I just really need my non-degree classes to be as low-effort as possible haha

Question Regarding Admit Process and Family Issues

Hello! I’m writing because I have a big question pertaining to the college application process for big schools such as Vanderbilt, Brown, Wake Forest, etc.

I have a fairly healthy academic record for my school: 4.5 Weighted GPA (4.0 UW) including 10+ AP classes with a majority of those being 5s (my ACT is a bit lacking at a 32, but I am currently enrolled in multiple retakes before Vandy ED1). Vanderbilt is my dream school as someone applying in state, but here’s the catch: my extracurriculars SUCK. Aside from performing piano solo onstage to a crowd of at most two dozen people, and aside from the clubs I’m currently in only senior year, I have nothing.

A lot of it has to do with family issues. Mainly, my 100% disabled and divorced Dad has trouble paying for himself back at his apartment, so I’ve been trying to cough up some money for him to live without getting a job (Mom won’t let me). Unfortunately, a lot of this comes from a place where my Dad tended to be emotionally and verbally abusive to his fiancé whilst I was around, completely draining my mind and body.

I’m not writing this to get condolences, but to add important context for my question: will Vanderbilt (or any other T30 school) understand why there’s a huge gap in such an important area? As mentioned earlier, I plan to apply to Vandy ED1, so any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Vanderbilt Shuttle Summer Schedule?

Hi, sophomore undergraduate from South Carolina considering living in Vanderbilt summer housing and commuting to a downtown internship this upcoming summer. Does the VandyRide shuttle run during the summer or would I have to purchase a bus pass? I am not familiar with Nashville bus lines, is there one that would run from Highland Quad to Centennial park or thereabouts? Would a summer ID be eligible for the bus fare?

help, trying to decide where to ed

Hi guys! I am trying to decide if i should ed to washu or vanderbilt. I love both and they both seem like the same school in two different cities. My biggest factor is the social scene at vanderbilt. I don't want to rush but i do want to make close friends, have fun, party sometimes. Is that achievable or is the social scene dominated by greek life? Thank you!
