The year was 1996

The Florida Gators had unfinished business after an undefeated 1995 regular season that officially ended when Tommie Frazier broke six tackles on a 75-yard TD run in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl to put Nebraska ahead 49-18.

The '96 Gators were an offensive juggernaut, led by Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel and All-Americans Ike Hilliard and Reidel Anthony.

The #1 Gators were favored going into their "Game of the Century" matchup against #2 Florida State, only to fall 24-21 to the Seminoles. This was the famous "echo of the whistle" game where Danny took big hits from the vaunted FSU defense, resulting in two late hit penalties but Spurrier claimed there could have been several more.

After the loss, Florida dropped to #4, and went on to win the SEC Championship against Alabama. The Sugar Bowl would be the usually expected destination, but the Gators would have to wait and see as the Sugar was slated to host the National Championship game. This was the early days of the Bowls trying to align to facilitate a true National Championship game, but the Rose Bowl had not joined the Alliance, meaning that the Big 10 and Pac 10 champions would still play in the Rose as per tradition. The Fiesta, Sugar and Orange Bowls were on a rotational Bowl Alliance to host the two highest-ranked teams that weren't bound for the Rose.

#1 Florida State was a lock for the Sugar. Their opponent was expected to be defending National Champion Nebraska, led by option QB Scott Frost (yes, that Scott Frost). All #3 Nebraska had to do was win the first Big XII Conference Championship game against unranked Texas.

Texas beat Nebraska 37-27, vaulting the now #3 Gators into the Sugar Bowl and a rematch with the #1 Seminoles. When #4 Ohio State knocked off #2 Arizona State in the Rose Bowl, the #1/#3 rematch became the de facto National Championshp game. 3 Wuerffel-to-Hilliard TDs and a slow white boy scramble to the end zone later, and the Gators won our first National Championship.

Would the HBC have won a National Championship without a little help from the Longhorns? I don't think so. So, as much as I may dislike some of our other SEC counterparts, I'll always have a soft spot for Texas.

But I still hope we can "C'mon Gators, Get Up and Go!" this weekend. Let's get it done at DKR.

Go Gators!

Love this!

After seeing film review of the South Carolina game I noticed how often players were late or never to their assignments or gaps, overly communicating before the snap and after, total confussion.

Reminded me of when Austin Armstrong's defense was failing and his mentor Ron Roberts "simplified" the defense and the rest of the season was far more successful.

We need that now. We can't know how good/bad our defense is when they don't even know where the hell they're supposed to be or what to do...

Tickets start at $18 for Upper GA and go to $64 for Lower Center Court.

Great deal to see the best team in the country compared to the outrageous prices in the O’Dome

If you want to sit behind the Gator Bench, sit in Section 114.

Does anyone else think he's not going to play? I feel like with an update like this he's not going to play.

most have probably already seen this video but just in case you haven't it's a good breakdown by the film guy of our defense against South Carolina.

TLDW: our defense doesn't look very confident right now

edit: no clue who the "Lord
Gators" are but I can't change it

Tramell Jones is currently taking QB1 reps with Aaron Philo currently sidelined in practice according to Zach Abolverdi of GatorsOnline

Here is my prediction on the game this weekend. True to Gators fashion the past 15 years of no consistency of winning when we think we lose and losing when we think we will blow them out. This, and the fact Manning is like a Gator, highly overrated and no consistency. I predict we when win. Leaving everyone scratching their head even more on how we won and why Manning sucks so bad at times. 27-24 Gators!

It's Wednesday, my dudes. Post whatever you want here including your Gator Memes

Self promotion of your own content (videos, podcasts, blogs) is welcome.

Only down by 7 at half and Sumrall said, “It looked like a dog died at the half in the locker,” which is wild because you’re only down 7 and you’re still in the game.

Y’all keep cookin’, Gator Nation is passionate and holds all to a high standard, as it should be. We show up, we are loud and we are heard, I’d rather have that than empty stands. But make no mistake, we are with you 100%. Stay strong, stay focused, our greatness is inevitable. Go Gata 🟠🔵🐊🐊🐊

SEC Tournament

I looked over it and I was pretty pleased. Out of conference it’s not nearly as difficult as what it was last season. The only 2 tough games are Miami and Duke. Miami should be a win for the Gators as they are not quite on Florida’s level which helps the resume. Duke is more of a 50-50 game, regardless of the outcome it won’t affect our seeding much negatively even if it’s a loss. Either way, that game should help to prepare the Gators to get back into tournament form as we saw Michigan lose to Duke last season but then went on to win the title.

As for conference play, UK and Vandy are both at home. For whatever reason, we often seem to struggle against those 2 schools so having home court will be great. Bama, Tennessee, and Texas on the road won’t be easy, but we’ve shown ourselves to be a terrific away team and we have a major advantage in the paint against those 3 teams. As long as we don’t drop too many big road games, we should still be in an excellent position to win the SEC and get a number 1 seed again.

Am I just doing this wrong? why are single basketball game tickets the same price as football tickets lol. they’re all $200+/e on Ticketmaster.

is it better to wait until closer to buy them? this seems wild. IK we are legit contenders but damn.

There is no question that the last two games have been painful at best and a shuddering return to the past at worst. But the take above helps keeps things in perspective.

Sumrall has started off strong and hit the brick wall of SEC reality. Let's give him some time to get his system and his players in place and the judge him as a HC. The very fact that we sit at 4 wins today with a win over Ole Miss is something we didn't expect when he was hired.

Stand by the Gators, and things will turn around. Go Gators!

Little man’s first Jersey could only be this, shame I couldn’t get a number 15 to match mine!
