Shoal LAN Discovery 2.0 is out

Shoal 2.0 is out

A few months ago I made Shoal, its a very fast terminal LAN discovery tool that shows its work: every device detail says which probe found it, what was sent and what came back. It was designed with AV Networks in mind allowing users to quickly identify that PTZ camera or Projector with an old IP still on it, not being discover-able sitting off subnet, or that has a self assigned IP.
It also shows users what AV services that device runs - Dante, NDI etc to quickly identify the device you are looking for.
Release 2 is now out as v2.0.1.

Whats New since 1.0

  • Windows support, through Npcap
  • Wireshark export: record every packet Shoal sends and hears as a pcapng file (w or --pcap FILE)
  • Switch interfaces with i, and Shoal asks before sweeping anything larger than a /22
  • Remove devices that have stopped answering (d and D)
  • Six new dark themes
  • Easier installs: Homebrew, .deb, .rpm and Arch packages, and an install script
  • Network access is set up once with shoal --setup, so no more sudo on every run, and shoal --upgrade updates Shoal however you installed it
  • Fixes, including devices that leave the network now turning red after a rescan

How to Get it

Terminal Based APP
This is a terminal based app, a TUI... you will need to run it in your OS pre-built terminal program.

Every release is built by GitHub Actions, with checksums you can verify. Please only scan networks you own or are allowed to test.

What are the likely products used to create this overlay, in your opinion, from free-OBS to budget-smudget products?

The background is live. Trees in the breeze, etc. This appears in video with a little bit of transition animation to present it and remove it. To me, this appears to be a ten-piece overlay for the main body (the names the numbers, the teams, etc) because each piece occupies its own space with a break in its overlay to the next one below it.

Video switchers under $2,000 for corporate events — what’s worked well for you?

I’m still learning about video switchers for corporate presentations and small company livestreams. For those who’ve used hardware switchers under $2,000 in these settings, what would you recommend based on your experience, and were there any limitations that only became obvious once you started using them?

Are there anyway to playback video from USB on TV without the progress bar/media control popping up.

Sometimes I have works that requires me to install unattended TV for exhibition and the exhibitor wanna plug in their own USB into the TV, but everytime the video ends and goes to the next one or when it loops the progress bar keeps popping up. Are there any way to set this on the TV itself. Preferably without having to plug another device into the TV. The TV that I have are Samsung's and LG's.

3/4 plane laser level recommendations for LED Wall builds

Any suggestions for a solid laser level and tripod when building ground supported LED walls? Two of the companies I work for have them but they’re not in great shape, the rest are always provided by freelance engineers and I always forget to ask which one they like. They’ve helped my workflow tremendously and I’m ready to purchase a set up.

Cheap iPad sized sceen?

I'm not 100% sure if this is the right subreddit, I also do not know much terminology, but basically what I need is a small cheap screen for an art project. All I need it to be able to do is play a video, not even with sound. The video quality doesn't have to be amazing either.
Just a small cheap screen that can play a video. I'm hoping for =<30$, but please let me know what prices tend to look like. Thank you!

Analog Way Aquilon Controller

• Upvotes

Aside from the RC400T(which sucks) or a Stream Deck(which rocks) what does anyone use for a controller on an Aquilon? We are wanting to create a more Broadcast ME switcher feel for our Camera's inputs and main output.

BRC-AM7 and AW-UE160 for tacking and stabilization?

• Upvotes

Heyo, we have a slight wall vibration in our back wall where we need to mount the camera, and curious if either of these models’ image stabilization is effective.

Separately, are either good enough for auto tracking a speaker who is walking lightly around the presentation stage? It’s a small corporate stage.

Thanks!

Do You Use One Tactical Fibre Supplier or Several?

I've noticed that many broadcast companies, rental houses and fibre workshops already have their own tactical fibre suppliers. Some even assemble their own cables.

But do they still need a second or third supplier?

I can think of a few reasons:

Backup stock: Cables get damaged or worn out after repeated use at events.

Different applications: Not every job needs opticalCON or LEMO. Sometimes standard LC/SC tactical cables are enough.

Bulk cable: Some workshops prefer to terminate cables themselves.

Custom orders: Different projects need 2F, 4F, 6F,8F or 12F cables, different diameters or lengths.

Busy seasons: A backup supplier can help when lead times get too long.

Of course, not all tactical cables are interchangeable. Connectors, cable construction and specifications still need to match the application.

Just between us, we're a manufacturer, so customers working with multiple suppliers isn't exactly great news for us. 😅 But from a customer's point of view, I can understand why it makes sense.

I'm curious how others handle this.

Do you normally stick with one trusted supplier, or keep two or three qualified suppliers?

And if you use several, is it mainly because of price, lead time, product range or reliability?

MultiCam Video Stream AI Director - Beta Testers Wanted

MultiCam Video Stream AI Director
Designed initially around streaming/recording live music for smaller venues

Spare Android phones become synced cameras feeding OBS on one Mac or Linux computer, all managed from a browser. Stream scenes switched by hand on Stage Shots, or let an optional local AI direct and steer it with Scene Chat.

See the platform demo (simulated cameras, nothing to install): https://mcvsaid.github.io
What it does, with screenshots: https://github.com/MCVSAID/mcvsaid-app

Currently seeking Beta testers!
Request Free Beta access: [mcvsaid@proton.me](mailto:mcvsaid@proton.me)

What it does

Phones stream to OBS over SRT, lined up to the frame. One dashboard shows each phone’s health, temperature and battery, matches colours across phones, and starts or stops every camera. Stage Shots, no AI needed: cameras laid out as they stand around the stage. Tap one to cut, pick two for a split; there’s a room map, and it works on a tablet. AI director, optional and on your own computer: a vision model rates the cameras and cuts. Scene Chat lets you steer it live (“more on the keys”, “less on the drums”). Modes for live music, worship, podcasts, panels, theatre, cooking and creator studios. Phone coolers (Black Shark MagCooler 5 Pro) controlled over Bluetooth, so phones can stream and record 4K together. Experimental. Nothing leaves your computer: no cloud, no telemetry. Good fit: church media teams, small venues, bands, podcasts, theatre and school AV.
You’d need: a live stream capable Mac or Linux computer with OBS, and spare Android phones you can factory-reset. The app takes over the phone.
Honestly: it’s a beta with rough edges, and closed source. Run it at a rehearsal before a show.

Developer support provided to beta testers.

Agile development using Claude Code so fixes and feature requests can be turned around quickly.
