We're one month out from the October 13 release of my Rod Serling biography, Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight Zone with TV's First Visionary, which I wrote about here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwilightZone/comments/1stuml6/i_wrote_a_book_about_rod_serling_and_the_twilight/

You can preorder the book here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alan-sepinwall/serling/9781538773888/ And if you preorder, you can get a free bonus essay about my favorite Twilight Zone episode: https://hachettebookgroup.formstack.com/forms/serling

I have a lot of interviews and reviews and other stuff coming up. Rather than flood the subreddit with post after post, I'm going to put links to all of that stuff in here, updating daily. I'm happy to keep answering questions about it, and I'll keep participating in other people's threads, too.

Reviews are starting to roll in. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review: https://www.publishersweekly.com/9781538773888 Kirkus Reviews had high praise, too: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/alan-sepinwall/serling-2/

Every day between now and October 13th, I’ll be doing a video countdown of the 31 best episodes of the show. I started out with a tricky case: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” which on the one hand is incredible, and on the other wasn’t actually made FOR The Twilight Zone. You can see that video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/K-_1eKeZtXM?feature=share

For The New York Times, I wrote about how Rod Serling create The Twilight Zone in part because it was the only way in the 1950 and 60s for him to comment on the subjects he cared about most, and how that's a good blueprint for contemporary media to deal with our surreal current moment: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/opinion/twilight-zone-tv-america.html?unlocked_article_code=1.G1E.r6FD.2Ml75fCaX-cR&smid=url-share

Personal Experiences Feeling a bit better on sharing this.

My grandfather passed away just over a month ago. He was a collector of so much Sci-fi and memorabilia (mainly Star Trek). I remember he was gifted this DVD box set of the entire series one year for his bday forever ago, and I also purchased him the DVD copy of the movie.

I remember one summer growing up, he let me borrow this set and I watched several classics and found several new to me episodes as well, and I would go back to his house and we would rewatch and talk about him growing up and all sort of things.

Needless to say, going through his belongings, this was the only item I asked for. Maybe one day soon I'll get a lazy Sunday and throw some of his favorites on.

Episode Discussion The original Backrooms

Post image
23 Upvotes

Was The Twilight Zone’s “Little Girl Lost” (1962) the original Backrooms?
Long before the Backrooms became an internet horror phenomenon, The Twilight Zone gave us “Little Girl Lost,” where a young girl mysteriously slips through her bedroom wall into another dimension.

The distorted space, eerie emptiness, disembodied voices, and terrifying idea of being trapped somewhere outside our reality feel remarkably similar to modern liminal-space horror.

Over 60 years later, this episode still feels unsettling. Rod Serling was seriously ahead of his time.
Anyone else think this was basically the Backrooms before the Backrooms existed?

I mean the plot and message are very simular. TZ really was the blueprint for a lot of upcomming tropes, stories and horror

Interesting article about Houdini's death, with a surprising Twilight Zone connection!

Well, not that surprising... i said it in the title.

Episode Discussion I’m sure this has been asked to death, but what is your favorite first or final monologue?

I’m fairly new here and am curious to hear everyone’s thoughts, as these openings and closings have always been what stuck out to me most with this show. Some of them are beautifully bone-chilling. What’s your favorite?

Episode Discussion Speculation about episode “The Prime Mover”

Do you think it’s possible that Jimbo faked the sudden loss of his telekinetic ability because had Ace won that last roll, Phil Nolan would have killed them rather than pay up? Just a thought.

So well our dear nan adams a young women...working on as buyer in the DEPARTMENT store in newyork.. currently on a vacation through los Angeles California to Manhattan across countries on her vintage car .. Alone.. well I probably thought that the creepy guy who somehow was appearing and Teleporting miles away.. Even u and I we all would get scared and assumed the worst case scenarios Regarding a hitchhiker .. suddenly appearing out of now where and showing us the way we are going.. btw I thought he would be A! A kind spirit who actually.. helps people through paths to let them reach their destination.. But on Other hand.. When nan Adams reach the railway cross line and then.. the man was pointing out.. in the.. Somewhat creepy way.. anna and even I thought that yea he is really evil fairy or spirit.. Well when i see him in starting minutes I thought of a logical answer maybe he has his own car.. and is stalking nan but then 9 days.. straight stalking through desert and countryside? No man.. that guy is really A death omen .. As for Anna she is still desperately trying to find A logical Answer that How exactly A man in a Shaggy Scarecrow looking man can follow her upto 9 days straight with only lift she even ask this same.. thing to the .. that guy who is going to her ship back and Help her to get the Gas from gas station when she was denied but I can't blame.. anna we humans When facing.. sometimes unexplainable situations sometimes get.. overwhelmed by the.. options like she did? What do you think about her behaviour? Should she should have accepted supernatural rules? Early on?.. btw on the fact 😂 I really like When nan adam try to hit that old shaggy coat wearing man with her car .. and almost crashed the car.. the sailing guy thought is girl is absolutely on nuts and he thought that well let's go I can find another cute chick but I can't keep her myself in one piece.. but she pull out ultimate women card! Saying I like you.. wooo!! Btw when she ask him that does he sees the mysterious man the guy lately denied and said that he doesn't see any men which confirms that he is either likely the death itself or a spirit of death bad omen .. and guess what about.. the man.. I was right he do Ese really death or.. a spirit.. but as for.. anna when she... Had died.. 9 days ago on her trip to Manhattan in a hill because when she called her mother She was already.. dead 9 days ago and her mother back in.. new york has...a Nervous breakdown.. so.. ultimately we were seeing and watching a spirit running away from her own fate..

Nothing like this.. again in Twilight zone.. now I would really like to know that about you guys think about my analysis .. and this crazy plot Twist!!

Bernard Hermann's score for Walking Distance

I recently re-watched Psycho. Such an incredible movie. Alfred Hitchcock said that "33% of the effect of Psycho was due to the music." It was composed by Bernard Hermann, who scored a few Twilight Zone episodes, most notably Walking Distance.

Following this subreddit, I don't know that there is a more beloved episode than Walking Distance. Scarcely a month goes by without someone praising it. And reading Hitchcock's comment got me thinking... how much of the success of this episode is due to Hermann's amazing music?

It's hard to write about music. When I watch this episode, I find it adds so much dimension and power to the story. The drugstore scene, the carousel after Martin speaks with his dad for the last time, the music as he walks through the park where he sees his younger self carving his initials into the bannister, the number behind the closing monologue... It all adds tremendously to the layers of the story. I don't think it would be nearly as powerful or memorable of an episode with a different score.

What do you think?

By the way, it's pretty easy to find his Twilight Zone music on Spotify.

My thoughts on Ep 16!!~

Ok so as I can say the episode was really.. carefully written.. with the typical nature of how greed can alter the behaviour of.. the most moralist and most richous man's our dear flura and Franklin gibli what seems like to be a standard typical 2 days and 3 nights vacation in the loss Angeles Franklin is portrayed as old traditional old house grandpa which views gambling strictly as bad and morally bad well it and typically within the first 10 minutes it was shown his personality already.. and if you take about her wife flora gibli well she is on another level at first well she is there well I thought they were placed directly Indo Hotel which contains the gambling casino machines she poses a kind of optimistic view that even though there a gambling is bad she try to convince herself and her husband that.. it's ok.. it's a unique kind of fun and I like how both of their nature completely changes by the greed when both of them hit a jackpot.. amazing isn't it? Btw continuing.. I already decoded their personality type.. I like btw that in exact after this exact scene that how desperate he becomes he grab the money in his room that he would not keep this untainted unrighteous money on his body and go there to literally every single money on back and see how it backfires 🫪🥀 dad bro little loses more than the money even arrange and literally in the desperation is doing the exact thing he dispised .. gambling in desperation to win the money back.. and make scene in public like typical Gambler.. with his wife..btw remember how he win that bit of jackpot at first time which started all of this well I instantly know that when the screen doesn't away from those three lines where the jackpot fruit symbols would come within the slot machine I instantly known that he would win this one because that would require the plot to actually keep going.. and I love how 🥀 he when losses all of his dollar coins.. he tackle the machine.. and little started screaming that give me back my dollars but well and when even returning back to room he is still blaming the machine that literally that machine just eat man dollars and well he is blaming that that machine is alive will probably hurdle even myself have heard that those coins call Franklin name.. so maybe he could be right but that doesn't change the fact that he is the one that has started gambling in the first place because he had to play the typical moral Hero play roll.. so I guess it could.. OK HOLLY SHIT!! NO I DON'T REALLY KNOW IF IT WAS A LITERALLY IS SUPERNATURAL OR IF HE WAS HALLUCINATING BUT FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE THE MACHINE DO COME INTO HIS ROOM AND WAS REALLY WALKING.. AND THAT'S WHY WHAT CAUSES HIM TO JUMP OF THE ROOM THROUGH window!!! It's mind blowing

Ok.. this was my analysis what I think I have possible to hypothetist tell me what you might think about this fact If you find it and extraction argument or debate is open in the comment..

1:- [It was Mental hallucinations:- ]well I could theoretically speak that because.. in his mind gambling was the ultimate form of sin.. you know his mind was so much convincing him that the gambling is something Supernatural that you remember that part when he was speaking that this machine is alive and intentionally .. broke down make him loose alongside that the coins were actually speaking his name Franklin what if it could be actually a direct result of a psychosis and in a slowly losing the grip into the reality and it could be mental health hallucinations combined with he had not slept for 24 hours straight and alongside his already pre existing hallucinations.. [ this is likely what I believe]

The second hypothesis contains that it could be directly related that us Twilight zone is famous for well dropping sci-fi or supernatural most bizzare rules in middle of episodes as twists I won't be surprised if machine was actually alive but was using.. illusion casting to actually kill.. franklin gibli.. well that's what I wanted to say..

I like most of the Twilight Zone episodes because they are weird, creepy, make you think some interesting “what if” thoughts!
But this episode is just not fair. Not fair at all!😂😭 first, his wife was absolutely scary and then the rest is depressed.
All I’m left with is how much that must suck so bad.

Post image

I recently streamed it, and obviously it’s not as good as the original series, but I also don’t think it’s as bad as people say. The Nightmare at 20,000 Feet was the standout but I thought all four segments were decent.

Honestly I don't fully blame Corey in "I Shot an Arrow into the Air" .. am I wrong?

I just finished episode 15 and I really like the plot but I have a huge perspective on it. At first I really believed that all of the astronauts were stuck on a meteoroid floating close to the sun because they kept talking about the radiating heat. But the big twist is literally amazing. They were breathing perfectly the whole time! The desert mountains gave the illusion they were on an extra terrestrial planet, but an asteroid wouldn't have an atmosphere or ozone layer. They were literally in the backyard of North America just 30 miles away from a main highway.

But if we look at Corey.. his dark pragmatic approach and Donlin's strict authoritarian personality is kind of frustrating but fascinating. If you take it from a strict survival logical point of view, Pierson was almost dead and just wasting the water. I kind of agree with Corey that they should preserve the water for those who are actually alive and going to make it. Any human would prefer self preservation when morality suddenly vanish because you don't know if you will survive the next day..

I can't agree with the way he later just killed his own 2 friends and crew members though, it was a cheap killing for sure. But the irony is crazy. Pierson was trying to draw the telephone booth in the sand but he died before finishing it. If only Corey didn't have the live gun, or if he just little bit listened to the others, all those killings could have been avoided. He literally murdered his friends over just 2 gallons of water, and then that hysterical laughter at the highway is just amazing acting. The typical Twilight zone episode, Rod Serling was really a genius.

What do you guys think about Corey's survival logic before he went foolish? Would love to hear some thoughts!..
