Vent I (autistic) feel like I will never be able to form a bond with my adhd sister
So, umm, if you are a fan of the 911 TV Show, spoilers ahead as this happened while watching the first episode of season 10 and involved discussion about it. Sorry.
Long story short my sister and I have never had a solid relationship. Me with my non-existent social skills, and her with her adhd that makes her forget half the stuff she’s told and the other half just doesnt get processed by her brain. So there have been a lot of fights. And our Mom is in the middle desperately trying to help us communicate with each other. Though in the past two years we’ve worked hard to have at least a decent relationship, though we still have friction once in a while.
Then tonight happened. My sister joined my mother and I in watching TV. We’d started watching the episode without her, then she came to join us, so we rewound about five minutes. In the first part there was a sinkhole that filled with some water, which at the end of the rescue the camera showed bubbles in the water. Which immediately perked my curiosity.
The next scene was then the city trying to figure out why there was no warning before the road gave 20ft. The fact that there was nothing from the gas or plumbing people told me that hmm, this is probably more natural than negligence or human error.
Then there was an incident at an aquarium where the water in a tank suddenly turned acidic, killing the fish and badly burning a diver. And there were a lot of bubbles. I blurted out “Hydrogen Sulfide!” Sister told me it was probably a gas leak.
A detector the fire crew used detected sulfur. I was like “knew it!” And apparently sis didn’t register that word: “sulphur”. I didn’t know that until later.
Something to note is that I have a Bachelor’s in Geology (whoo). Specifically, I took a lot of classes focusing on volcanics and plate tectonics. Which included volcanic hazards, areas of the world that have/had volcanism, etc.. So my brain was going “okay, H2S2 is volcanic, and LA is in a tectonic zone…” Also, Volcano (1997) and Dante’s Peak are two of my favourite movies; the first is, well, a volcano forming in LA, and the other actually is the most closely scientifically accurate volcanic eruption movie.
Thus, as the show continued, I was thinking either a hydrogen sulfide gas pocket, or its source; a magma pocket. That made me conclude “volcano”. Sis kept saying “no, it could be a gas line.” Which on it’s own, fine. Except she used a a parenting tone like I’m five.
Now, I’m mad and thinking “when does a gas line have sulphur in it?!” again, not knowing she missed that one word during the aquarium scene. So we started arguing until Mom broke us up. Then I learned sis had seen the trailers (I had not). And I got upset because It felt like she was spoiling me and that I was wrong or that the events were not linked and I was overthinking. (I’ve now seen the trailers and yeah, lava! Fuck, a whole ass volcano and even a “dont get Pompeii’d”).
Sure enough, in the last few minutes… lava erupted from the sinkhole and I just blurted out “I knew it!”
Didn’t even realize it until I’d already jumped off the couch.
And sis exploded at me. Then it just dissolved from there and Mom had to yell at us both to get us to stop.
Honestly I was in the wrong for my tone (when arguing back) and blurting out stuff while characters were speaking, and she was wrong for her tone with me… but in the end I had to leave the room because she was just pissed at me while I felt like shit. Because I, once again, had completely screwed up with the social cues. Mom, totally fine with me blurting out during TV, though she will remind me not to (and I really do try). I didn’t realize that doing that would upset my sister, who i had forgotten was missing up to half the words being said. Not that she wasn’t paying attention, but more her brain not processing the words.
But what really got me was her yelling “And this is why no one likes you!” Which really hurt. Because I constantly struggle to fit in with my peers and not fuck up the social cues in public. I also got bullied to hell in high school to the point I nearly wanted to, well, alt+F4, and my mom (bless her!) had to drag me back kicking and screaming. And now apparently I can’t let my walls down at home and be more “me” and not have to focus on not making social faux pas 24/7. That I can’t just fuck up a social skill at home and be gently corrected, instead I have to mask completely around my own sister.
Currently im not looking for advice. I already have a therapist (not my mom). I just need to get this off my chest.
