Squadron 42 Playtest Megathread

Hello squadroners (?)

As some of you may know we have a sister subreddit, r/Squadron42 which is also ran by our team and is dedicated to Squadron 42. That subreddit is more restrictive in terms of not allowing Star Citizen (PU/PTU/etc.) unless it directly relates to something in Squadron 42 (not just "oh this ship is in both games!!!!!! type stuff).

We know the SQ42 playtest is a big deal right now, rightfully so, and we want to take the opportunity to show people that sub a bit more and give them an opportunity to start chatting there.

With that, we have made a megathread on that subreddit for the playtest event. Given it is the first megathread for that sub we will not be deleting individual threads but we will be reminding people in the comments about it. We encourage you to head over there and talk with your fellow citizens about the playtest event to your hearts content. We will not be doing a megathread here or enforcing people move to that megathread from this sub either.

Megathread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Squadron42/s/oLop2SHbnh

Cheers!

Okay so, someone has been flicking days past me and I'm not entirely sure how we got to October this soon...

IRL has consumed much of my time personally, I've been a bit out of touch with SC development for a few months now but checking back to see tech preview having a physics fix at long last is a welcome sight!

What's everyone's go to ship in these last few months? Has my baby boy been fixed up any further (IronClad)? | Fly Safe, -Crazy_Muffins

DISCUSSION Valve Denies Steam Keys for 1M+ Squadron 42 Backers Due to Store Policy

1.5k Upvotes

CIG was trying to circumvent Valve's store policy, quoted here:

Default Release (or standard release)
This is the most common type of key on Steam, which is usually tied to a Steam store or retail Steam Key package. These keys are appropriate for retail boxes or sales on other digital stores. Customers can activate this type of Steam Key at any time, but the product will unlock only after it has been released on Steam. Games and applications launching on Steam may receive up to 5,000 Default Release Steam Keys to support retail activities and distribution on other stores. After that, all Steam Key requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. There is no guarantee that you will be provided additional keys.

We would need over 1 million keys. Valve's policy is to issue 5000 keys per game. Anything more than that needs negotiation and payments to Valve.

Valve's policy is here:
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/keys?language=english%22

A Star Citizen creator who played Squadron 42 also asked CIG in-person and got confirmation that CIG asked Valve, and Valve said no:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbCRlAhBXTY&t=10m20s

It's like this because there's no benefit for Valve to host Squadron 42 for free. By forcing sales to happen inside the Steam platform they get 30% of the money.

If anything, blame CIG for thinking they could circumvent paying Valve's 30% cut.

They could negotiate a Steam Key transfer if they really wanted to. CIG would have to transfer up to 30% of the sales price per unit to get keys. They can even negotiate the "big publisher" 20-25% cut since it's a big bulk sum which hits the required numbers for that. But somehow I don't think CIG will want to offer anything. ;)

Also, Steam keys were never promised to us by CIG since the Steam release was only announced this year.

Edit: Your downvotes make me sad. I put effort into finding this policy instead of just reposting a content creator's word. I just wanted to clarify and show the exact policy for anyone still holding out hope.

Came across a video I made in 2018 on one of my first sessions on the PU.

Going through that airlock and reaching the pads on PO, seeing that jpeg come to life with Crusader on the background.. absolute cinema!

NEWS Rich Tyrer (SQ42 Senior Game Director): At least 95% of the company resources will be put into making Star Citizen 1.0 after SQ42's release.

  • As soon as Squadron 42 is released, the goal of Rich Tyrer and the team is that at least 95% of Cloud Imperium Games will be focused on creating Star Citizen 1.0.
  • The goal is to build all the technology from Squadron 42 into Star Citizen, such as smarter enemy AI, new flight model, new global illumination, planet technology, better graphics, etc.
  • An extremely small team (less than 5%) will work on maintenance bugfixes/patches of Squadron 42, and the pre-production ideas for Squadron 42 Episode 2. They will only think of story ideas and concepts. Just planning, not creating anything.
  • Cloud Imperium Games will not start production of Squadron 42 Episode 2 until Star Citizen 1.0 is released.
  • The Squadron 42 Episode 1 story is self-contained and does not end on a cliffhanger. So they are not in any rush to make Episode 2.
  • Source: Interview details at 23:02 in this video, where one of the Squadron 42 playtesters sat down with the game director in private and got these answers. Turn on English audio dubbing or captions: https://youtu.be/Li_auB8gQmw?t=1382
  • Squadron 42 is scheduled for Q2 2027: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/en/comm-link/transmission/21301-Letter-From-The-Chairman (also seen on the Steam release page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4045720/Squadron_42/)

QUESTION F7A Mk. II Loadout

Good Afternoon, Citizens!

Absolutely loving the F7A right now, and the current loadout I’m using absolutely melts smaller ships. She’s absolutely gorgeous…and the stock paint is

PVE based build atm:
- 2x NDB 30s
- 2x Revenant Gatlings
- Heartseeker Turret

Anyone running anything else they’ve had fun with. Really enjoy the combination of the mobility along with the ā€œbrrrrrtā€ of the gatlings, although I know it’s not meta…still fun as hell.

DISCUSSION CIG - Why did we lose hangar elevators???

Thumbnail
gallery
85 Upvotes

The original design for the Polaris was that the hangar would raise up to the top. There are still clear design signs that it was meant to do just that. And yet it didn't get that ability, with no explanation of why.

But what I've just realized is that you also took away the ability from ships that ALREADY HAD IT. The 890 Jump's hangar had an elevator that raised it to the top and I used that feature ALL THE TIME. It made loading the hangar easier in many cases. Yet that feature is simply gone now. All we can do is open/close the hangar doors.

Why did we lose the ability to raise hangars and does it have anything to do with hangars having repair/refuel/re-arm ability? Is there no way to have both?

And if it's not the repair/refuel/re-arm ability that caused its removal, what did and can we get it back please???

PS - Are we ever going to get the sheets & pillows back in the 890 beds that magically disappeared before 4.0? When does the 890 Jump get a GS pass? For a $1,000 ship, it deserves one. The 890 Jump literally has ZERO storage lockers of ANY kind. A Capital $1,000 ship and it has ZERO storage whatsoever. That's unacceptable.

And screw all the people who are going to say they hate the 890 Jump or that it's junk and not worth it. There are PLENTY of players who love this ship and paid VERY good money for it. They deserve better CIG.

QUESTION I can't seem to figure out how missiles work. Can somebody help me?

Post image

EDIT: Solved! I just had to extend my wings on the Corsair. Sorry for such a dumb post, I'm new, and it might help someone else šŸ˜…

Hi guys, I hope this is the right place for this but I don't understand missiles. I've watched countless videos but I can't find my specific problem.

In the picture above, my missiles are there but I can't seem to load them. It always says armed 0/1. I can't shoot them either, even in PvE missions outside the hangar. How do I load them? I tried:

- Insuring the load out and getting it back, I had to restock the missiles but still 0/1 missiles loaded

- unequipping and re-equipping all the missiles

- Turning off and on all systems and weapons

I've been going crazy about this issue.. any help would be greatly appreciated!

DRAMA This game and you guys mean so much to me

Yes, I probably should have had 1, 2 drinks less, but I don't care rn. But I do care about this development and the community. Forgive me for being emotional, but you are like a second family to me. We are discussing issues, we hate those bugs, we love those moments, we rage together, we celebrate together. Over all the years, 10 to be exact in my case, I developed true friendships here and got to know tons n tons of nice folks and I even appreciate those who tend to complain all the time since complaining also means caring. Been on endless Bar Citizens, always hoping for the next patch to fix things that get broken again anyway, but that's just part of this increbile journey we are a part of.

Stay positive and safe, fam, love y'all!

DISCUSSION The state of Star Citizen?

I've been away from SC for about 2 years but have been intermittently checking up on what people have been saying about the playability of the game. It's always the same in these threads with people saying the game is still unplayable.

I was able to play yesterday for a solid 4hrs straight without any game breaking bugs (or any bugs really). Was I just lucky or has the stability of the game improved significantly over the passed two years? The other posts always make it out that there has been zero progress in this regard.

DISCUSSION What if we could get a system that physically tunes Engines/Firepower/Armor?

Post image
20 Upvotes

IMHO, I would really like to see a Tonnage System implemented for our ships in SC similar to BattleTech/Mechwarrior. Don't like how slow your ship is? Sacrifice Firepower and Armor to upgrade your Engines! Want more Firepower? Drop Engines and Armor! Feel like you are dying too easily? Drop Firepower and Engines to increase Armor!

This would allow more customization for players' ships. I still recall how at one point we were told we would someday be able to increase Speed by reducing Weight, that any ship could become a Racer. This would allow that! If you want the maximum of any of these variables, you would need to minimize or even eliminate the others! It would be like the old Power Triangle, but more static due to the stats being tied to physicalized variables and needing use of the VLM.

If it were implemented, we could be able to see different types of Armors! We could see a lighter Reflective Armor that gives a bonus against Energy, but is weak against Ballistics. Heavy Armor would be better against Ballistics, but would require extra weight. Ablative to counter Explosives... Things like that.

On the whole, I think more agency is better. Maybe you like a ship's look, but it does not perform juuuuusst the way you want it to? You could tweak it the way you want! And if CIG decides that something might be too OP, they can restrict it. As a matter of fact, that just brings me to how I want to see a Quirk system too. CIG could fine-tune everything by implementing and dialing Quirks.

Just give us more agency, please? Because customization is something that will always happen. Just look at what people will do to cars! Maybe I want to take a Firebird and drop all the ordinance and Guns so I can put the biggest Engine I possibly can? Maybe someone wants to do the same to their Mustang so we can race? Maybe someone else wants to take their Spirit to a car show an airshow with the loudest Engines they can equip? The possibilities could be endless! (or at least increased exponentially)

DISCUSSION Salvage contracts to clean up abandoned ships

Have CIG Talked about space stations or POIs giving contracts to some salvage the ships abandoned around them? My thought is if a ship has been there for a week or something and there are 3 or more of them then they issue a contract giving salvage rights to someone, and the ships are powered down, and you get to just clean up all of those ships without any fuss being made by the security of the various locations.
