Conversation Topic Is 16 too late to start learning to sing?

• Upvotes

I’m 15f and have recently been more interested in learning to sing, but I know a lot of people start lessons when they’re really young. I probably won’t have time to take lessons until my final exams are over so I’m wondering if it’s too late for me to start or if it’ll take too long to get good? Ik it’s a stupid question sorry but I would appreciate any advice ^^

Conversation Topic Does anyone else have (or have you had) a lot of trouble with pitch?

• Upvotes

This post isn't really about asking for advice (although any tips are more than welcome). I just have to say that it's incredibly frustrating to feel like you're getting the technique right and understanding how it works, but still struggle with pitch. I'm mostly posting to see if anyone else has gone through or is going through the same thing.

I've never taken private singing lessons, only choir classes. I know I should, but I haven't been able to afford them yet. It's definitely something I plan on doing in the future, and I really hope lessons can help me with this particular issue.

The thing is, I've heard people say that pitch accuracy is something you develop at a very early age, and I did, in fact, only start getting exposed to melodies and harmonies (in the sense of actually trying to understand them) during my teenage years. I spent my entire childhood wanting to be a drummer, and while drumming obviously involves notes and tuning too, it's a different kind of understanding compared to playing other instruments. By the time I started exploring harmony and melody, mainly through guitar, I was already 15.

I only really started getting into singing when I was around 19 (I'm 22 now), and ever since then, I've kept hearing the same comments: "You have a beautiful voice and incredible potential, but you need to work on your pitch."

Honestly, sometimes I feel like there's something wrong with me, because how is it possible that I'm the only one who can't hear what everyone else seems to hear?

Anyway, I guess this is just a bit of a rant, because it's genuinely frustrating. I'm someone who's VERY passionate about art, and I can't imagine myself doing anything in the future that isn't related to it. Singing is something I've genuinely fallen in love with over the years.

Joke/Meme All these new singing "mix voice" tutorials I see all across instagram and tiktok from newer singing channels seem to be more of a flex ...

Like here is a standard exercise everyone and their mom knows... they'd get millions of views out of nowhere showing stuff like basic lip trills to figure out mixed voice and belting sounding just like a creaking door or spongebob squarepants in the toilet screaming— then suddenly they go off and just flex their singing after, singing that doesn't even sound like what they're demonstrating in the vocal exercises... sometimes even letting the piano play the notes instead of them demonstrating themselves doing the exercises and say "promo code for 50% off my prerecorded video vocal lessons content right here in my bio." Mind you this is all information you can get from attending a basic choir class in grade school. But since these people got famous from it they charge $180 bucks for lessons online or some exaggerated amount for 30 minutes. Like because of the way they advertised themselves, it makes it seem like they're gatekeeping all the most valuable information about singing like they hold a secret treasure chest of information no one else in the world knows. The secret formula.

Then you download the content after payment and it's all the same information you can find free elsewhere. Nothing new. Got you saying, "meow meow meow", "nay nay nay", "mum mum mum", "wooooohooooo!!!" Everything all falsettoey sounds nothing really fit for mainstream. But once you attempt and apply in song it feels like a whole different story. You sound like mickey mouse up there but down there you sound like Nat King Cole or the dude from Barbie Girl song.

Just sharing my singing Live acoustic & vocal cover of "Plush" (STP). Tried to capture Scott Weiland’s grit while playing guitar at the same time 🤘

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share this live acoustic/vocal performance of "Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots. Scott Weiland’s vocal style and grit have always been a huge influence on me, and singing this live while keeping the acoustic rhythm locked in is always a fun challenge!

Would love to hear your thoughts on the vocal delivery, breath control, and tone!

🤘🎸

Conversation Topic How do you ACTUALLY learn how to sing? From 0. Absolutely no progress at all. Bonus if I can stop hurting myself.

• Upvotes

I've really gotten into musicals recently and think it'd be super cool if I could learn how to sing. Not professionally or anything (I have no chance anyway) but just to actually learn something and be decent at something. Problem is, I'm the worst of the worst.

No matter how much advice I read, I can't stop my throat from hurting. And since I keep trying to practice, it never goes away. It's like a constant strain at the back of my throat 24/7, and I have to clear my throat or cough nothing up a lot. How do you even do this?

I see breathe in until you feel your ribs expand, but then, you don't wanna push from your abs cuz then you'll lock up. "Just use your diaphragm" doesn't help when I've never done that before. I'm sorry for the frustration but super difficult to be motivated when any "wrong" way can just damage my vocal chords permanently and just hurt. Have I already fried them?

And then there's stuff that I wonder assuming I can even start singing like what is my range? Are you stuck at one range your whole life? How do I find songs to practice that don't hurt? Stuff like that.

And no. I don't have extra money for a coach. Super rural area though so I probably don't even have one nearby.

Conversation Topic Is there really a “right” way to sing? My vocal coach says I need more support, but it doesn’t feel like me.

I’m not really sure how to describe my singing style, but I tend to sing in a soft, breathy, almost whispery style, somewhere along the lines of Billie Eilish, Ethel Cain, or Nico.

I recently had a vocal lesson, and my coach told me that I should sing with diaphragmatic breathing and develop a more solid, supported voice. They explained that if I want to add a whispery quality to my singing, I should first learn to sing with proper breath support and then add the breathiness on top of that.

I understand the logic behind this, and I know that breath support is important for vocal health. However, when I try to sing this way, it doesn’t feel like me. I feel like I lose something about the way I naturally express myself through singing.

I’m not trying to become a powerful belter like Ariana Grande. I’m drawn to more intimate, breathy, understated vocals, where the softness and vulnerability are part of the expression itself.

So I’m wondering: Is there really a “right” way to sing, regardless of the style you’re going for? Do singers with a naturally breathy style still need to develop a stronger, more supported voice first? Or can a naturally soft, breathy singing style be valid in its own right, without necessarily needing to sound more powerful or projected?

I’d love to hear from singers, especially those who sing in a breathy or whispery style. Have you ever felt that vocal lessons were pushing you toward a way of singing that didn’t feel authentic to you? How did you approach it?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How’s my A4? Slowly getting more accustomed to singing higher.

Started singing in late July. Now starting to like how my As sound although they vary by vowel. Slowly hating my voice less and less 😅

This is probably the best feeling it’s been. Hoping to free it up on other vowels and really secure it over time.

Ive liked making music for a few years, but mostly rap. I tried making heavier music yesterday and really enjoyed it because i can forget about the message or complex rhyme schemes and just kind of let this animal out of me. This is me singing a part of Bohemian Rhapsody. Im going to try and sing The Great Pretender with this same style when I get to it.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Can anyone give me advice whether or not this microphone is okay ?

Hey so I have yesterday started to experiment with band lap since I ordered a microphone.
And I was wondering if someone more knowledgeable could give me advice.
To be honest it only cost me 35 euros and right now I am still figuring out how use it correctly. But I heard that there are big differences in quality. And of course I don’t expect something extraordinary for the price. It’s just, correct me if I am wrong, but I barely hear any difference so I might as well stick to my phone for now and save up some money.
The black part I did with the microphone the other without. Can only upload one video so I made it to one. In the second clip I made more noice but I mean the voice quality in these audios…
If you want to know which microphone it’s FIFINE T669.

Do you hear a difference ?
Or is it that one pretty good for the price ?
Or is the quality crap?

Conversation Topic Just had my first singing lesson at 38. I was so freaking shaky and nervous. But I loved it.

I've been absolutely terrified of singing my whole life. At least when I think others can hear me. After a long ass time thinking it over I decided to sign up for voice lessons. I was so nervous. No idea wtf I'm supposed to do with my arms. Became super aware of my whole body trying to sing. "Eyes shut, open...what do I look at then? How's my posture. Why do my cheeks feel like they're flapping. Crap my voice is starting to get gravely and dry. Legs weak. Sweating. AAHHHH"

But after an hour of this plus speaking with my teacher....I can't wait till next week.
We assessed my range, which the lowest was a C#1 all the way to around an F3(of which I can attain comfortably), and I was able to get up to C4 with some effort. I'm shocked, personally.

I hope this will be the confidence boost I need to get past my mental block of singing in front of others. I tried singing House of Sleep by Amorphis, which is pretty easy for me rangewise, and those whole time im in my head thinking "God this is awkward, my voice sounds like crap". But I persevered.

I need to now make a list of songs with baritone(?)/Low voice singers. Outside of metal I don't know a lot of singers, so I am open to any recommendations of songs to check out. (We listen to songs that have aspects of things I'll need to work on, analyze what the singer is doing correctly, then I try to sing it.)

I'm just proud of myself for going through with this. I can't wait for the weirdness of it all to go away and I can be comfortable singing.

Thanks for reading my rant

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Lump in a throat feeling after singing like this. Is it ok?

Is this a mixed voice? Found this throat position yesterday, repeated today and now have a lump feeling in my throat. Not painful, just like when you're crying a lot. Is it dangerous or anything? That throat position seems to be my only way to add more body in my high notes. Sorry for sounding like shit, my question more is about technique itself.
