If you're looking for something cool to do in Silver Spring through Oct 31, check out "The Royale" at the Silver Spring Black Box!
Hi neighbors, a plug, but a local one. My friend Mike is in the cast for a Historic Boxing play at The Silver Spring Black Box this month and they need support to keep the play going.
Flying V is putting on The Royale by Marco Ramirez. It's an interesting and dynamic drama inspired by the life of Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight boxing champion of the world, in 1905 during Jim Crow.
He was the first black man allowed to fight the white heavyweight champion and his win over the win sparked celebrations and white mob violence across the country.
Even if you aren't a boxing fan, the staging is super cool: there's no actual physical contact in the ring. Instead, the cast uses rhythm, stomps, and claps to recreate the tension and pace of a prizefight. It really packs a punch (pun intended).
Nights worth knowing:
- Fri Oct 23, 8pm: Black Affinity Night
- Sat Oct 24, Sun Oct 25 and Sat Oct 31: 3pm matinees if you prefer an afternoon show.
- Sat Oct 31, 8pm: closing night + Halloween party (costumes encouraged)
It's at The Silver Spring Black Box (super easy to get to downtown) 8641 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910
Would love to help them pack the house! You can grab tickets here:

What's the Regal in DTSS like on a Saturday night?
I want to see You Can See Everything there. Is it full of teens chatting and using their phones or will it be chill?
