It's 5:45 am on Saturday morning, and there's 10 people in a line in front of 41st ave sc skateshop.
Why?

Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?
Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

"Motorized hydrofoils (e-foils) are illegal and considered dangerous at Cowell Beach, Santa Cruz, due to high-traffic, beginner-friendly conditions, and regulations within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. E-foils and motorized personal watercraft are prohibited in the surf zone. The sharp foils and propellers present significant danger to the high volume of beginner surfers at Cowell's."

Been going to Jacks downtown for decades. The burgers are fresh and the grilled chicken is also fantastic especially with Avocado and Bacon (even though I don’t get bacon anymore). Is there anything better????! I think not

I’ve been going through lots of stuff I had packed away at my parents. Clothes, art stuff, toys, photo albums etc. Everything is in good condition. I tried to join a couple Facebook groups for giving and sharing things for free but I think because I don’t use Facebook and my profile is new they won’t let me post and admins won’t let me join (I totally get it, they think I’m there to flip stuff). I could donate to Grey Bears or Goodwill but would rather they go to people who want them without having to buy them. Anyone know of groups like this either on Facebook but more open, or off Facebook? Thanks!

Hello fine people of SC,
My friend is throwing an 80th bday party for his father next month and he is looking to get a taco truck for the event - although we would probably prefer one of those operations where it’s not a truck, per se, and more someone setting up a flat top and making tacos to order. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I know this is a thing that people do, but I don’t know how to find it. Preference to mom and pop style businesses. No English, no worries. Probably preferred, even.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate you all.

Charlie Hong King seems to be the Santa Cruz restaurant with the most polarized opinions (in my experience).
I absolutely love the place - tasty, healthy, organic food in big portions for a reasonable price. I’ve had most things on the menu and haven’t been disappointed yet.
But some people absolutely hate it!
So do you love or hate it? Or do you have another restaurant that you find more polarizing?

Is cookie cruz closed? I see advertisements all over UCSC campus and I live very close to it so I’ve been meaning to try. I ordered doordash and the driver said it was closed? I’ve been trying to call them during their open hours but nobody answered. Did they get shut down or am I having bad luck??

I lost an earring in the afternoon on 10/15, bicycling from 30th/Portola to
Dominican Way (via the Chanticleer bike bridge) It has sentimental value/belonged to my mom. Please DM me if you found it.

I was told by a mechanic to get my beast belly washed, but there aren't places in SC that do it. Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Installing luxury vinyl planks in my home near the Boardwalk. I removed the carpet on my third floor to my surprise. There was moisture underneath the carpet padding. Has anyone else ever dealt with this issue?

I posted a thread here a couple years ago titled "What's up with Watsonville" when I was think about moving here. Thanks for all the advice. I moved here and it's the best decision of my life! This is paradise, I love it here. One of the many bonuses of living here is the music on the radio is amazing. I heard Fank Zappa on 88.1fm yesterday! Never thought I'd hear Zappa and the radio. There's also great reception for Bolly 92.3 FM. There's always amazing music I've never heard before on the radio here. One of my favorites is KAPU 104.7fm which doesn't transmit beyond Watsonville city limits. They play a lot of obscure (to me) club music from the 80's and early 90's. DJ's never talk or introduce songs. Their website says they play Hawaiian music 24/7 but I've never heard it. It seems like somebody's passion project. Anyone know the story?

Hey everyone! Is anyone going to see Xavier Wulf at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz tonight?
The show starts at 9 PM, but I get off work in Watsonville at 9:30 PM, so I’d probably arrive around 10–10:15 PM.
Does anyone know if The Catalyst allows late entry? Also, are there any opening acts, or does Xavier go on right at 9?
I really want to go, but I’m trying to figure out if it’ll still be worth buying a ticket since I’d be arriving late.
Also, if anyone’s going tonight, let me know! Would be cool to meet up with some people there :)

The prices at Bayphoto have gotten absolutely out of control. I just got quoted $35 to develop black and white 35mm film.
I would love to support someone local, but based on a quick Google maps search, I may have to go over the hill.. And I have no idea what that would cost.
No hate to Bayphoto. I understand they have to pay their employees and materials become more expensive. But it just doesn't make any sense for me to pay that much money for film dev when the role also costs $25.

On this special edition of Talk of the Bay, Nyanko and Howard welcome Logan Walker, director of programming for the Santa Cruz Film Festival, to discuss the return of the festival for its 26th annual celebration, October 14–18. A film lecturer and curator who teaches at UC Santa Cruz and San Jose State University, Walker shares the festival’s history, its commitment to independent cinema, and the work that goes into bringing more than 500 film submissions down to a carefully curated program. With five venues across Santa Cruz, five days of screenings, filmmaker Q&As, special events, and parties every night, this year’s festival promises an exciting celebration of the art of filmmaking.

On this episode of Talk of the Bay, host Howard Feldstein welcomes Remington and Ida Hoffman, a husband-and-wife filmmaking team with roots in Santa Cruz, to discuss their short film, Christmas Angels, featured in the Santa Cruz Film Festival’s Human Touch Dramatic Shorts program. Ida shares how becoming a mother inspired her to begin screenwriting, drawing on memories of growing up with a hardworking single mother amid the stark contrast between wealth and homelessness in Santa Monica. The 13-minute film takes viewers on an emotional journey blending humor, drama, mystery, and social commentary. Made on a shoestring budget, the project became a family collaboration, with Ida writing and starring, Remington serving as cinematographer and co-director, and their young daughter Una contributing a natural, memorable performance. The film’s success was recognized with the Made in LA Award at the prestigious HollyShorts Film Festival, where it was selected from thousands of submissions.

Santa Cruz city council has moved their Vision Zero goal (no traffic-related deaths within the city) from 2030 all the way to 2050. From 4 years to 24 years! Just a big “fuck you” to the community at large from the car-huggers.
Practically speaking, everyone who would/should be working on this now for the city of Santa Cruz will be long-retired by then.

In the meantime, Hoboken NJ has implemented a VZ plan and has gone 9 years without a single fatality:

Hey! Does anyone know the best choice of hair salon for large, curly Afro type hair? I’ve had a naturally grown Afro that I hardly take care of for a long time know and it’s time to start making it more comfortable and intentional. Need some sort of cool black barber shop or just somewhere experienced with this sort of thing!
