I’m currently dealing with an academic integrity accusation at SBU, and I’m honestly really stressed about it. I’m hoping someone who has been through the Academic Judiciary process could share some advice.
During an in-person math exam, my professor recorded a short video of me because he believed I was using my phone under my legs.
However, I was NOT using my phone. My phone was in my right grey pants pocket the entire time. I briefly reached down between my legs a couple of times because I was experiencing some physical discomfort and needed to scratch myself (idk if any girls can understand or get the point of what Iam talking about, especially during the period). Each movement lasted only about 2–3 seconds.
The professor never approached me during the exam, asked whether I had a phone, or checked what I was doing. Instead, he recorded a video without any permission and later submitted an academic integrity report.
He also pointed out that I skipped some steps on a few exam questions, even though I got some of the answers correct, and used that as additional evidence of suspected cheating.
I’ve now met with Academic Judiciary and was told that I have to decide whether to appeal. If I don’t appeal, I’ll receive a zero on the exam and have to complete a Q Course. If I appeal, I’ll have to attend a formal hearing, and the penalty could potentially be more severe if I’m found responsible.
I genuinely studied hard for not only this exam and did not cheat. Previously, I felt relieved and happy that I finally finished all my 6 math midterm I, but now it’s frustrating to think that a few seconds of innocent movement for scratching and adjusting myself could potentially affect my academic record.
Has anyone experienced something similar at SBU?
How fair is the Academic Judiciary hearing process?
Is it worth appealing when the professor has a video but no clearly visible phone?
What kind of evidence or explanation would be helpful in this situation?
Has anyone successfully challenged an accusation like this?
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!
