Make Friends Here

Because we constantly get "How do i make friends" posts. If you want friends just post in this thread. I'm going to make it a sticky topic. I'm also going to give you 100% foolproof tips to make friends that have worked for me all my life 100% of the time.

Here is my foolproof plan that works 100% of the time. It is a 4 step process.

  1. determine what your hobbies and interests are.

  2. go to places where these hobbies and interests happen

  3. interact with people.

  4. If you don't have any hobbies or interests get interested in something and repeat steps 2-3.

It is literally that simple.

I am an extremely abrasive and unlikeable person. I have never failed to make friends using these steps. If I can do it so can you.

Just wanted to update y'all on the filmmaking work I'm doing here in the Valley.

I'm in the midst of post-production on El Jardin, the horror film starring and executive produced by David Barrera. In the meantime, I wanted to share the drama feature film I'm co-producing for director-producer Nate Boyer and Black List-placing screenwriter Reynaldo Leal just attached Valley-born actors: Valente Rodriguez, Dannie McCallum, and David Barrera.

If you know any RGV actors or film folks, please feel free to DM me! Really excited to continue on this film journey with y'all!

Edinburg Many helicopters passing through the North of Mcallen / Edinburg.

I've been listening to many helicopters passing every few hours for several days, either at night or day, today about 3 passed by this same area with a time difference, and they sound like big helicopters, I almost didn't get to see them but the other one I saw and it was war helicopter style.

McAllen Personal experiences with renting apartments/townhomes in the RGV..?

Hopefully this post won't get removed, but what are y'all's experiences with renting here in the RGV..?

Literally every landlord we've ever had has fucked us over when it comes to repairing appliances that break. All of the contracts we've signed have clearly stated what the landlord would be responsible for and what us as tenants would be responsible for.

We always notify our landlord in a timely manner and he just gives us the same run around of them sending someone to check it out. Well, the landlord lets us know a time that maintenance will be coming and we'll be waiting the entire day here just for no one to show up. And they absolutely refuse to have someone working here while we're not home so we have to move all of our errands around for something that doesn't even end up happening!

We've gone months with appliances staying broken because we continue to believe the words that someone will eventually come to fix what needs to get fixed.

So now we've refused to pay this month's rent because why are we gonna hold up our end of the contract if the landlord won't..? You'll get your money once you take the repairs seriously. Well, we relayed that to him and he said he would be more than willing to send someone to come check on what's broken as soon as he gets the rent money.

We've dealt with a lot of this back and forth bullshit with no improvement for the ENTIRE 2 and a half years we've been living here. They claimed to have renovated just for us to find out the AC unit they had put in wasn't strong enough for the size of our apartment. Mind you, we have 2 little ones and it had been in the low to mid 80s everyday regardless of the outside weather! I even have pictures saved of the temps just in case they wanted to try me because they would send someone just to check the thermostat and if it was good, that just meant the AC was working just fine too, apparently. Not to even mention this place is literally falling apart! There's cracks all in the ceiling, we've had leaks, and don't even get me started on the outdated plumbing! Renovated, my ass!

We've already taken another rental property to court for doing the same thing to us a few years back and I'm really not wanting to go through that process again even though the judge sided with us and we won. But it seems like every landlord down here is like that. A lot seem to take advantage of the fact that we're struggling and they're betting on us not having money to deal with things legally.

I would just like to hear from other locals, what their experiences have been like and how they dealt with it moving forward. If anyone could offer advice or suggest rental properties that don't fuck over their tenants, it would be greatly appreciated. Trying to stay within the McAllen/Edinburg areas. TIA!

An Unofficial Hidalgo County Voter's Guide

• Upvotes

Hi, I created a resource to assist people in voting for this midterm election and for future elections as well.

This resource will be able to answer common questions that one may have about an upcoming election, such as "When does voting start?", "Where can I vote?", and "Who's running?". I’m sure many of you probably already vote and don't need help. However, there's probably at least one person who you know who doesn't vote, but would like to. You may not have the time to sit down and explain everything out to them, so this is where the resource comes in handy. The other great thing about this resource is you can use it for future elections as well. I would suggest laminating a copy if you want to have this resource for the long-term. (I know I only have a voter's guide for those in Hidalgo. If someone really wants a guide for another RGV county, let me know, and I'll work on it.).

Questions and Notes to keep in mind:

Aren't we gerrymandered though?

Yes, but it doesn't affect many races, including the statewide positions. It wouldn’t affect many of the countywide positions either. Even if there are races that are affected due to gerrymandering, you should vote for those anyway. With that being said...

Vote All The Way Down the Ballot

Please do take the time to vote for every single item on your ballot. Be aware that straight-ticket voting is not offered as an option anymore. You will need to vote for each seat individually. Keep in mind there will likely be non-partisan seats and bonds on the ballot too, so make sure to do your research and get your sample ballot ready prior to voting.

Skip the Mail-In Ballot

If you have physical limitations, I highly suggest voting in-person through curbside voting rather than a mail-in ballot if possible. I've gone through enough election cycles to know that mail-in ballots are not always reliable for various reasons. Sometimes the ballot comes in late, the mail-in ballot doesn't come in at all, or the ballot doesn't get counted at all. Moreover, I also wouldn't consider mail-in ballots secure because of what a whistleblower reported a couple of months ago. Please try to make the effort to vote in-person if you can.

Don’t Just Vote: Share

Don't assume anything. Don't assume one side is going to win over the other. Do assume people from both sides of the political spectrum are going to share this resource with someone or their network. If it's not this resource, it's another one.

Therefore, feel free to share this resource with a friend or whatever resource you like. Just don't limit voting to yourself, and get others to join you too. I'd also like to note, if you end up seeing another variation of this resource, there is one other one out there. It was created by me, but I would prefer for this new version to be shared instead.

TLDR:

An unofficial voter resource guide is available in English and Spanish. Although we are gerrymandered, it doesn’t affect every race, including TX Governor. Do your research, and vote all the way down the ballot. There will likely be things like non-partisan seats and bonds on there too. Try to vote in-person or curbside because mail-in ballots are unreliable. Lastly, please encourage others to vote.

I'm not associated with any political groups or campaigns.

In keeping things non-partisan, I've refrained from telling you who to vote for but I would like to inform you on some facts about the candidates running for Place 1 on the Edinburg School Board. Forgive the autocorrect on Dominga's name in the first slide, it escaped notice when editing. & also shes been in office since 2019, not 2021. 😳 Thanks so much for reading!

Early voting starts tomorrow and runs until October 30th! The general election is on Nov. 3rd.

Edinburg

Hi! I am a nonhispanic woman considering a work assignment in Edinburg. Any good things to know? Places to avoid, places to go, should I brush up on my Spanish as well? Thanks!

Thanks for the responses! They’re super helpful. I’m also wondering if there’s any areas you think are good to live in. I’ll only be there for 3 months :)

Mission The Cats Have Spoken… We Need More Pads!

Post image
25 Upvotes

We’re out of potty pads again! If anyone has extras they’re able to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. ❤️

We also gladly accept newspaper!

These supplies are used in our cat kennels, and trust us… cats can be messier than you might think! 😂 Some of our feline friends would much rather do their business anywhere but the litter box, so potty pads and newspaper help us keep their kennels clean.

If you’re able to help, you can:
• Shop our Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/3JNWD3P6HUWFQ?ref_=cm_sw_r_mwn_ggr-subnav-share_8FFKX5ZWE8PXS0CRBAW0_1&language=en-US

• Drop off donations at:
Mission Animal Shelter
227 Abelino Farias St.
Mission, TX 78572

Mon - Fri, 8am - 5pm
Sat & Sun, 1pm - 4pm

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our shelter and the animals in our care! ❤️
