Mod Announcement PIA Transparency Report Q2 2026

Post image
67 Upvotes

Our latest transparency report is now live, covering April, May, and June 2026. We publish these every quarter so anyone can see exactly what legal requests PIA receives, how we categorise them, and what happens across our Bug Bounty and Vulnerability Disclosure programs. Full report here: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/blog/transparency-report-q2-2026/

The legal requests

PIA received 19 legal requests over the quarter — the same total as Q1. They break down as:

  • 4 subpoenas
  • 2 warrants
  • 7 other government, law enforcement, and civil requests
  • 6 foreign and informal requests

Importantly, these are requests received. A request doesn't mean an allegation was substantiated, that a specific PIA user was involved, or that every request was even asking for the same thing. Each one is reviewed individually against the applicable legal process and our policies.

What we actually disclosed: nothing

No VPN activity or connection logs were produced in response to any of the 19 requests. That isn't down to fighting each one — it's because the data doesn't exist to begin with. PIA runs on RAM-only servers that don't write VPN session data to disk, so there are no browsing histories or connection records that could tie a person to activity on the VPN. A legal process can tell us whether we have to respond; it can't create records our systems were never built to keep.

Bug bounty

On the security side, after removing duplicates we had 51 unique submissions this quarter, 2 of which were classified as valid and passed to the relevant teams. Worth flagging: a higher submission count doesn't mean more real vulnerabilities. It includes duplicates, informational reports, and out-of-scope findings — but every submission still goes through triage.

Our next report will cover July–September 2026. Happy to take any questions in the comments.

Mod Announcement Heads up Mac users: PIA now shows up in the Mac category of the Mac App Store

Post image
18 Upvotes

Quick heads up: PIA now shows up in the Mac category of the Mac App Store.

If you're a Mac user, the app's actually been downloadable there since late May, but only if you switched over to the "iPhone & iPad" tab. As of last week, it's in the main Mac category, so it comes up in the default search results without you hunting for it.

Under the hood, it's the same iOS/iPad app, now compiled and optimized for Mac, easier to find and properly tuned for the platform. Grab it here: https://bit.ly/pia-mac

GUIDES Subscription Cancellation - Beware

If you want to cancel your subscription, make sure that the AUTO RENEWAL is TURNED OFF in your account. Mine automatically renewed and I informed them a day after the renewal, and I am stuck with the payment because they will not cancel or prorate my annual subscription. Just want to share this information for awareness. Turn off your auto renewal if you are thinking of not renewing so you don't get stuck like me.

HELP 10 plus years as a customer and they can't or won't fix my issue with a dedicated ip.

Went back and forth this morning with customer support and they were unable to correct my issue with my dedicated IP. Seems like the only thing that works well with PIA is their billing department. Looking for a new VPN provider!

HELP Install/Upgrade via AUR (Arch)

Does the official installer work with Arch Linux yet?

I installed an earlier version via the AUR but noticed these warnings when trying to upgrade to 1.3.8 so not overly keen to upgrade that way anymore.

Privilege escalation tool 'sudo' is invoked in install:piavpn-bin.install:post_install() via obfuscated shell syntax - the tool name was deliberately hidden, which is a strong sign of malicious intent.

obfuscated shell feels highly sus?

HELP - macOS Ver 3.6.1 build 08339 on macOS Sonoma - by-pass VPN in split tunnel mode no longer works

$subj - all of a sudden PIA decided to no longer allow Brave (browser) to by-pass the VPN tunnel, in split tunnel mode. Removed and re-added Brave from the list of apps to by-pass, unchecked and re-checked split tunnel in settings, uninstalled and re-installed PIA, to no avail. Any suggestions?

HELP Firestick PIA keeps disconnecting - Virgin ISP

Hi,

Hopefully the flair is correct, as I am not sure what specifically is causing the issue.

I've got the PIA app on my amazon firestick LG TV.

I can connect using either Wireguard or the other one relatively well for about 45 minutes/ an hour, then it stops connecting. When previously I would change location, type (wire guard to the other one), UDP, smaller packets; nothing. Won't connect. Clicking the on button does nothing. Tries for a split second then fails.

I am on Virgin Media. Turned off child filters in the router settings. Split the bands (5ghz and 2.4hz as I was told that might help). Didn't.

This issue can be temporarily resolved by deleting the data from the app, which logs me out. I have to log in each time to use the VPN which isnt ideal.

Last post about this here was from 6 years ago.

Wondering if anyone has any advice please. Will advise what I have already tried. Happy to try changing settings in the app (although i have already tried most if not all) and router amendments.

Thank you.

DISCUSSION Is a VPN worth it at PIA's renewal price?

For those who’ve renewed PIA, what made you stay?

Was it the price, a feature you rely on, or just that it works well on your devices? Also curious if there’s anything that would make you reconsider next time.

Mod Announcement 10 new server locations live today, including Ghana, Kenya, Lebanon and Puerto Rico

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Two weeks after the last batch of 15, we’ve added 10 more locations. That brings PIA to 179 locations in 112 countries and territories.

What’s new:

  • Americas: Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, plus a new Brooklyn location in New York
  • Middle East & Africa: Ghana, Kenya, Lebanon
  • Asia Pacific: Woolloomooloo in Sydney

Eight of these are new countries or territories. Brooklyn and Woolloomooloo add extra capacity in New York and Sydney, two of our busiest cities. More locations also means more options to pick from when demand is high.

Some of the new locations are virtual. You get an IP for the location you picked, but your traffic goes through a physical server in a nearby country. The full list of virtual locations is here.

They run on the same 10 Gbps, RAM-only servers as the rest of the network, under the same audited no-logs policy.

Nothing to install. Open the app, go to VPN Server, search for the location and connect.

Got a location you’d like to see next? Let us know in the comments.

SOLVED Canada locations have unusable speeds

Ran into a weird issue today. Canada locations are usually my go-to as they are closest to the US while supporting port forwarding. However today both Vancouver and Montreal are giving me ~0.5 Mbps down and up. Truly unfathomable speeds. Tried bolivia just to test and got about 100 down and 25 up. Is anyone else experiencing this?

And yes this is the case on OpenVPN and Wireguard.

HELP Can I bind qbittorrent to pia w/o running pia on my router?

I get crappy bandwidth when I turn pia on in my asus router - speed goes from 300 mbps to 80 mbps. I really don't want dcma notices from using qbittorrent. In qbit I can either use proxy or bind. I understand binding is more robust, but, have been using proxy for several years and have not had issues. Is there a way to use binding w/o running pia through my router? I'm gonna guess the answer is a big fat "no" since there is no pia interface to bind to unless the pia vpn client is started in the asus router.

But, I'm hoping there's some magic settings that will allow me to use binding instead of proxy for a better torrenting experience.

HELP - WINDOWS Are DuckDuckGo and Yandex blocked regional/ISP side for anyone else, or actually down? (Access only working over VPN)

Hey everyone,

I’ve been completely unable to access DuckDuckGo or Yandex since yesterday—neither site will load over my standard network connection unless I turn on a VPN.

I've already tried troubleshooting across multiple setups:

  • Tested on desktop/PC and phone
  • Tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  • Tested on both Wi-Fi and mobile data

Given some recent local network disruptions here, I'm trying to figure out if this is an ISP/regional block or if they're experiencing actual global outage or DNS issues. Once I route through a VPN server, both sites load fine instantly.

HELP Caught lying to paypal about my open case.

Called Paypal to figure out why the case was still open and they told me that PIA told them i haven't reached out at all about the unauthorized 5yr subscription. They also informed them i was past my 30 days to reach out and request a return for the unauthorized charge that happened. I laughed and asked them where to send the above screenshot to. (that i posted on here weeks ago.) and forwarded the email of over five hour long transcripts of me trying to get them to act like humans and return my money.

HELP - ANDROID I am once again asking about progress on making the automations work reliably

Hey u/PIASupport, can you provide any updates on the progress, if any?

Several app updates later and the automations actually seem to be working even worse.

Most of the time the only way to get the automation to even kick in is opening the PIA app, switching off the Automation switch then switching it back on. At this point it's easier to open the app and just connect manually.

I have disabled battery optimization for the app and set it as the default VPN app in the settings so the service is always active (I see the persistent notification in the notification shade).

I mean, how hard can it be? I have two other apps on my phone (HomeAssitant companion and PhoneProfilesPlus) which have no problem detecting whether I am connected to Wi-Fi or Cellular and execute their own automations, based on an SSID, without fail every time.

HELP - WINDOWS Done with PIA

Just venting, but I am so fed up with the unreliability of PIA.

Every single day my PIA client is constantly disconnecting... reconnecting... disconnecting... reconnecting. On Android, on Windows, across multiple different servers in different countries. I only keep enduring this frustrating experience because I very regrettably bought a multi-year subscription and don't want to waste the rest of my money.

PIA support is useless.

Does anyone have any reliable alternatives they have a good experience with? I used PIA originally because they had a good reputation for keeping no logs, but I'm just so over how unreliable they are now.

DISCUSSION UK Streaming Optimised Connection Slow

Is anyone else experiencing very slow connection times to the UK Streaming server?

I reported this to PIA over a week or so ago and we tried all sorts of fault finding and tests to try and isolate the issue right down to uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Nothing worked and whilst the issue was elevated I have heard nothing further.

It can take up to nearly two minutes for the connection button to turn green.

Just wondering if others have the same problem and how widespread it is? What is causing this?

HELP deceptive marketing practice?

just got a email to sign up for special offer because my subscription recently ended. i was really thinking about it until i compared prices. before clicking the link i went to their website first picture is going into their website fresh no login no email 3 years plan

website

then i click the email and go to a page that is supposively better

email deal they just removed a year and added a 1 more months to the "free" months. to make it seem like a deal.

this is very annoying marketing. you could have had a customer come back. am i crazy? sure with the extra month your saving like 11 cents more with the email offer but your also paying for less time. also that the 1 month and 1 year are more expensive via the email link then the actual website is crazy.
