I’ve been running DIY CO2 for a few days. Still learning how to fine-tune the bubble rate and diffuser placement (currently dealing with bubbles being pulled into the HOB outflow)

The tank is still very new (less than a week old), so I’m focusing on cycling and plant growth first. Planning to add some shrimp later once the parameters are stable.

Tank My little DOOA collection, mostly emersed

A small collection of DOOA setups I've been keeping at home. Most of them are grown emersed rather than fully submerged, so they feel more like little gardens in glass than traditional aquascapes.

Not sure if this style is everyone's thing here, but I've really been enjoying it. Curious what you all think!

Edit: Since a few people asked, the tall plant in the second tank is some kind of Sagittaria from a hobbyist in China. Exact species unknown, so if you recognize it, let me know!

Question Will my tank work without CO2 System?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hey,

My aquarium is 243 days old, holds 120 liters, and I've had a CO2 system connected to it from the very beginning. At first, I also had plants that really needed it. Unfortunately, they died anyway, and now I still have:
- Rotala rotundifolia
- Microsorum pteropus
- Cryptocoryne albida
- Hygrophila corymbosa Siamensis 53B
- Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
- Cryptocoryne crispatula
- Anubias barteri var. nana

Now for my question: Do I absolutely need the CO2 system? Or would it work just fine without it?

I use liquid fertilizer every day. Yesterday, my CO2 system almost killed my fish because the pressure always goes up when the CO2 tank runs out (I have a single stage regulator). That's why I'm a little worried about letting the system keep running like this. But since a dual stage regulator is expensive, I've been thinking about shutting down the CO2 system entirely.
Thanks in advance! :)

Tank My 70L low-brackish planted aquarium

Hi everyone,

A week ago I set up a new aquarium. It will be a low-brackish water aquarium, which I will eventually bring up to a salinity level of 1.005 SG. I will keep a single figure 8 puffer in it for whom I have also set up a small ramshorn snail breeding tank. Now, as some of you may or may not know, there aren't many plants that can actually survive in brackish water. Most plants already die at a salinity level of 1.0005 SG, which is basically still freshwater, but me being stubborn, I really wanted plants in my aquarium. Now there are plant species that naturally grow in brackish water like Vallisneria americana, cryptocoryne ciliata, zostera and ruppia maritima but, all of these plants are basically impossible to find.

More common plants that are known for tolerating low-brackish water are anubias nana, anubias barteri, microsorum pteropus and bacopa monnierri. These are the plants you see in the tank so its a pretty minimalistic design. I do think that the bacopa in my aquarium looks more like bacopa australis which Is not brackish tolerant so I might remove it. I actually did find a seller for cryptocoryne ciliata and vallisneria americana in Germany so I am planning on adding these to the tank soon.

I went for a pretty minimalistic scape and I think it turned out pretty good. Once I get the v. Americana it will grow to the surface nicely and shade the tank from the brightest light which the puffer will also kike a lot. I just really hope the java fern and anubias will stay alive once im at 1.005 SG. So what do you guys think?

If there are any people who have a planted low-brackish tank, I would love to know the plants you used.

Flora Melting rotalas.

Almost two months ago i planted some new flora life into my tank. Mostly all of the seem to be doing ok, especially the cryptocoryne wendtii and the Phyllanthus fluitans. But the Rotala sp. 'Green' and Rotala sp. "blood red", seems to be dying, i assumed it lost its leave because of melting, but i haven't seen any new growth.

The aquarium is quite established over 3 years old. I've placed florish tabs under the soil before planting to give it a nutritional boost. I add tropica plant growth premium once a week along with tropica carbon nutrition daily. I don't have a co2 set-up.

I did have these plants in the past and they grow tall and dense in the past, am i missing something?

The first image is today, the other two were nearly 2 months ago.

Discussion Red Root Floaters and splashing - who knew

Added 6ish of these floaters to a failed tank to see if they would help turn it around 4-6 months ago, learning that RRF's do just fine in high humidity with splashing as do salvinia minima and giant duckweed.
I havent done anything to this tank other than top it up once, it is running a 8hr light cycle, only nutrients are from algae and scuds (added to consume the algae). There is a matten filter that may or may not be running, if it is the flow is very restricted.

Takeaway: Most of what you see posted about Red Root Floaters and splashing isnt correct, while they do better dry, they can survive and flourish IF they have adapted to your water. Ive found they behave similarly to crypts when changing to different water parameters, even slightly different.

My water report can be found in the San Diego water report Alvarado station, make sure to look at it and the supplemental report for a full picture.

Question How do I get these plants to root?

Thumbnail

I bought these plants 4 days ago. And they seem to be melting already.

I planted them in a dry start tank that I flooded after planting. There was an algae bloom so I covered it for two days.

Is there anyway I can save them? And how do I get them to root?

And will I just have to accept the algae bloom and keep the light on?

Last question - what's the first plant? The second is a variegated Lindernia.

Thank you so much!

Discussion Is it possible to create a self sustained tank with no heater no light and no filter ?

I used to fish keep multiple heavily planted tanks and I had to get rid of them all during multiple moves and just well life.. anyways I’m kinda not in a position to be spending money like I used to but I still really enjoy the peace and happiness a planted tank gave me and was wondering if it’s possible to create a self sustained planted tank with no critters . And honestly eventually I’d want to get some shrimp to put in there but I’d have to see if I’m able to even accomplish this first

Question Which part of this red tiger lotus do I bury in my substrate?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I was checking on my plants and noticed that the bulb detached entirely from my red tiger lotus plant??? I see something growing but I can't tell if it's roots or leaves and which side to bury in my substrate. My actual red tiger lotus plant itself doesn't look too great which is why I checked on it and the bulb was just completely detached.

Fauna Cyst on side of dwarf rainbowfish?

Hey everyone. I noticed today that one of my dwarf rainbowfish has a lump on their side. None of the others do and everyone is acting normally, including this fish. I’m not sure if this is bacteriogenic, cancerous, or what. I have not added any new fish or plants for months and I quarantine fish for 60 days.

Tank details:
55 gallon, heavily planted freshwater.
Temperature: 78 F

Liquid test kit results:
pH 7.4
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm

Any ideas? I have removed the fish and placed them in a hospital tank but have not begun any treatments.

How am i doing?

Hi all here is my fish tank which i wanted to share with the community and hear youre thoughts about it how i am doing. I started this tank early this year and its my first one ever. I had a lot of struggles at the beginning a lot of snails etc but that seems eliminated now due to a good cleaning and adding a couple Helena snails. Because of the snails my plants suffered a lot to. But i think things are going better now gladly.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Let me know what you all think

Sorry repost i forgot to add the video!

Algae How to treat algae after 10 days away

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I went on vacation for ten days and had someone feeding and adding fertilizer to my tank as I normally would, I suppose I did not account for how much my maintenance of water changes, trimming, cleaning etc really makes a difference because I’ve come home to some extra algae. I was getting some tiny pop ups of black beard algae for awhile before I left and i always scrape a little green algae off the glass here and there. It seems like the black beard algae is on quite a few plants now where as before it was mainly on a few rocks 😭 all of my fish lived and the plants appear to still be thriving as they’ve grown quite a bit. I think im answering my own question here but do i just treat the BBA with the amount called for on the bottle and be patient? Should I do more of a water change? If so how much? Since the fish and plants are okay i dont want to do anything drastic but i also dont want this spreading on all my plants, thanks in advance! Also: fertilizer is apt1, supplementing flourish iron, using apt fix for the BBA, light is on 7 hours a day on a timer

Algae Brown hair like algae taking over tank

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all, any insights on how to combat this algae?

I keep the light on for 4-6 hours per day, however the tank is in living room and I keep the window blinds open (mostly for the monstera growing out the top).

I have 2 SAE, neos, and a mystery snail in there already. As well as a few other community fish.

What would be the best course of action? It feels like manual removal is doing very little to the tank.

Question Red plants that can withstand hungry mystery snails

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have two female magenta mystery snails that I rescued and I have a beautiful tank set up for them in pink/purple/red hues so they can live like the tiny queens they are. I thought I did everything right, I researched beginner friendly red plants that don't need CO2, I landed on tiger lotus, mini scarlet temple, mini super red ludwigia, and purple bacopa. The tank was cycled, the snails were recovering in the hospital tank, the plants looked good, so I added the snails...

In two days they'd mowed through all of my plants except for the tiger lotus, which remains untouched. The only thing that I can think of is that the tiger lotus has less "chewable" leaves (since mystery snails need soft food), so does anyone have any suggestions for red plants that will be less appetizing for my snail ladies?

Beginner How big do tiger lotuses get?

I have a 10 gallon I'd like to rescape and am thinking about putting one in it. My question is, is the tank too small? I've seen some images of it be super massive and some pretty smallish in a 10 gallon, and google isnt helping me.

Thanks in advance!
