Planet Coaster 2 A love letter to Frontier 💙
As the cotton anniversary* for Planet Coaster 2 is drawing near, with an exciting new DLC just around the corner, I felt like writing a "thumbs up!" post this evening.
We all remember the launch. It was dicey. It felt rushed. It felt unnecessarily clunky. Why be in such a hurry to release a game that clearly needed a few more months in the oven? "Why I won't play PlanetCoaster 2 for now" became a much-watched video on my channel — at least to my standards. I'm not a famous creator, after all. But what I had to say resonated with many: PlanetCoaster 2 (PC2) deserved better than this.
Then, Frontier got their asses into gear and started publishing and delivering on solid roadmaps. In the first half of 2025 we saw so many Quality of Life improvements, the returns of some beloved themes, and some surprising new game mechanics (on-ride cameras!) that we'd all been waiting for since the days of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. They then released a true gem of a DLC: Sorcery. While clearly inspired by Harry Potter, it proved to be a wonderfully versatile theme.
Toybox may be considered as the ugly duckling by many, but it also provided us with many, very useful pieces. As always, the true strength of the scenery items lay in using them for anything but their intended purposes. Thanks to scaling and the ability to even rotate gridded structures on all three axes, the sky really is the limit.
2026, what a year! The first few months were far too quiet, and this is something Frontier will hopefully draw a lesson or two from: Communicate! Don't leave us in the dark. Even a "this is what we're working on" would have done the trick.
But also: 2026, the year in which many more great improvements and new mechanics were introduced (arcade machines! event trigger buttons!) to PC2, and we finally got something that seemed almost impossible: Parades. The namesake DLC and the truly phenomenal Silver Screen pack got released in quick succession, giving most of us a bit of a whiplash. And just as we're getting comfortable with the new pieces that came with the two latest DLCs, we're awaiting the glorious return (and reinterpretation) of arguably the most-beloved DLC in the Planet Coaster franchise: Spooky, or rather; Spooktacular!
I'm seeing more content pop up both on this subreddit and on YouTube, the Discord servers are buzzing with creations, new mods getting released every week, and Frontier keeps cranking out fantastic DLCs + free updates.
More than a few people were afraid that the arrival of Planet Zoo 2 would mark the end for PC2, but from where I'm sitting I'd say: Planet Coaster 2 is alive and well, and its future looks nothing short of amazing. Here's to many more creations!
