I'm hoping for some suggestions on a phone to use as a dedicated, internet source for my computers at around 10-15 hours each day, and I'd like your suggestions on a phone for hotspot. Or more info if this is even a good option for our needs. We would be using it while traveling for about two months at a time. Will have one video call at a time but generally don’t use more than 3-5g a day. Our AT&T plan has a robust phone tethering plan so would like to use that.
What I need:
Continuous, stable tethering over both Wi-Fi hotspot and USB, working on both Windows and Mac without special software
A hotspot that never auto-shuts off when idle (iPhones drop it when nobody's connected no matter what settings we try)
A phone that won't overheat or throttle while plugged in long term.
4G LTE is fine. I don't need 5G, and it doesn't help upload, so I don't want to pay extra for it.
Used or older is fine
My constraints:
I'm on AT&T with a phone-line deal, so the SIM has to stay in a phone, not a router or hotspot device. Right now we are using a digital sim.
I'll also use it while traveling in Mexico, so band support and Mexican carriers matter. Not been an issue with AT&T and iPhone in the past but I’m unfamiliar with androids.
Upload speed and disconnecting are my main weak spots.
My current setup sucks: An iPhone SE (2nd gen) as an AT&T hotspot in a weBoost Dash vehicle booster cradle constantly disconnecting and not great speeds. I usually get about 20 Mbps down and 4 up in weak-signal areas, and the hotspot continuously disconnects if a computer or phone briefly goes inactive. I’d love to be able to use our old Nighthawk 4g hotspot but our current plan won’t cover a dedicated hotspot with the same data allotment.
Phone I'm considering: A used unlocked Pixel 8a (US model, G8HHN or GKV4X), it open to any suggestions.
Questions:
Is the Pixel 8a a good fit for 24/7 tethering, or is there a better older phone?
Does it run hot or throttle when plugged in and hotspotting all day? Has anyone used the "Limit to 80%" charge setting for this?
With a Pixel USB tethering work on a Mac and Windows?
Can you disable the hotspot auto-off on the Pixel so it stays on indefinitely.
Any suggestions for boosting upload while keeping the SIM in a phone?
Maybe a completely better option?
Thanks!
