Any nuclear fusion projects I could do as a high schooler?
Iam working on an annual project and I want to focus it around fusion, are there any mini prototypes or experiments I could do that wouldn't be too difficult or expensive?

Palisades nuclear reactor restart continues despite work environment safety findings
thenationalnews.comThe US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has granted permission to Holtec International, owner of the Palisades nuclear reactor, to retrieve a recently tipped fuel assembly, although the plant received a warning about its work environment.
On August 30, as new fuel was being lowered into the reactor, one of the fuel assemblies tipped, causing the plant's planned restart to be placed on hold.

Double time pay
What companies offer double time pay?
How do they offer? Are the workers union or company?
Just want to get some general ideas to propose and get information for adding to a future union contract
Thank you!

Nuclear Trivia Thursday?
I'll start. Which US plant uses municipal waste water as their cooling medium?
Here's a few things I want to know: 1. Does it smell bad there? 2. What is their supply flow rate? I imagine it would need to be 10k+ gpm.

My Concerns, Stated About the Kalpakkam PFBR, Please Share your opinions
Please, Kindly note that my concerns stated are facts, I do not thereby try to discourage on Kalpakkam, Or any nuclear power plant.
So, A PFBR is a Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, it's a 500 MWe Sodium Cooled Fast Breeder Reactor, Second one in operations next to Russia. It Uses Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel with a Uranium-238 blanket to breed more fissile Plutonium-239 than it consumes. However, In a file of the development of PFBR, Even if it is a prototype, It has been stated that it has positive sodium void coefficient of upto 2+ $. In one of the files of "Conceptual Designs of PFBR core" It has been stated. 'A conventional homogeneous type of layout for the core
and blankets has been selected. Radial heterogeneous
configuration, inspite of advantages of higher breeding ratio and
reduced sodium void coefficient, was not considered due to
increase in Pu enrichment, higher fissile inventory, larger
overall core size, reduction in Doppler coefficient, increased
thermal striping protection requirements for above core
structures, and possible difficulty in achieving optimum
neutronic coupling between core zones without extensive
experimental studies.' And, As we know Positive Sodium Void coefficient, Is dangerous at a point, Regarding Feedback loop, And crossing the threshold of prompt criticality. Please Try to research and Reply ASAP. Thankyou for your time, Have a great day! 🤗

Potentially residing 2.5 miles to 10 from a nuclear plant. How should I prepare, outside of the obvious?
So as per the title. I’m a huge supporter of nuclear power normally but found out the plant near us is actually in an earthquake zone and there’s been some concern over than in articles etc. I don’t know what safety procedures they have in place and I’m not knowledgeable on things nuclear to be able to understand them in depth.
Because building a bunker isn’t realistic and overkill how else can I be prepared for a potential emergency outside the following safety items?
- iodine pills
- enough food for 3-5 days
- extra medications
- Geiger counter
- masks for the entire family
- pet food and carriers near safety kit
- change of clothes for a few days for each member of the family
- first aid kit
- always keeping gas tank full and an extra tank filled for the kit
- one car always home if someone is home
- one adult always sober enough to drive if needed
- also looking into seismic detectors for the house with an alarm systems but none seem that great so might skip.

Wondering whether to get Nuclear related Associates Degree while in Military.
Hello, I have recently joined the Coast Guard as a machinery technician. I have found the opportunity to get a Naval Nuclear Engineering Technology degree basically for free. How much could something like this stand out when trying for positions? Do you think it would be worth my time to get this while in?
I plan to do my four and leave to become a Nuclear Operator. From what I hear, the money is good (can raise family in comfort) and it is a future I want to contribute to (green power).
Thank you for any guidance.

Lasers reveal a rugby-ball-shaped nucleus inside fermium-255
thebrighterside.newsFermium-255 exists only in tiny artificial samples, yet its nucleus has now yielded a remarkably detailed portrait. High-resolution laser measurements show that the heavy nucleus is strongly elongated and carries magnetic properties that differ sharply from older estimates.
The isotope contains 100 protons and 155 neutrons. Researchers determined that its nucleus has a stable prolate shape, meaning it resembles a rugby ball rather than a sphere.
The results provide the first high-resolution measurement of fermium-255’s hyperfine structure. That fine splitting of atomic energy levels carries information about the nucleus hidden inside the electron cloud.
An international collaboration involving 18 institutions conducted the work. Scientists from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the Helmholtz Institute Mainz, and the University of Gothenburg led the effort, with Mitzi Urquiza-González as first author.

I built an open-source reactor-physics engine where every result is independently checkable — looking for people to break it
This is my own project, free and MIT-licensed, and I'm posting because this crowd will find the weak spots faster than anyone.
Short version: SMRFORGE is a screening reactor-physics engine for small modular reactors — full-core nodal diffusion, a continuous-energy Monte Carlo, S_N transport, burnup, kinetics, rod worth, the usual screening stack — with a one-step escalation to OpenMC when you want a lab-grade eigenvalue. The part I actually care about is what comes out: every run produces a signed "evidence bundle" that carries the result, the inputs, and the provenance, and that anyone can verify offline and re-run.
A concrete example you can check in a minute: a published OpenMC criticality result, k = 1.00522, sealed. Open smrforge.io/check.html, watch it verify in your browser, then edit a digit and watch it fail and point at the broken section. If you have OpenMC, you can go one step further and reproduce the number from the sealed inputs — the geometry and materials are in the bundle, not described, actually in it.
I try to be honest about grade, because this is the part that usually gets oversold:
Checking against public criticality benchmarks on open ENDF/B-VIII nuclear data is code verification, not validation against a measured experiment.
Every result is labeled screening-to-reference grade and advisory. Nobody should license a reactor on a SMRFORGE number alone, and the tool says so.
One of the benchmarks I'll be publishing is HTR-10 first criticality, where continuous-energy codes over-predict across the literature — and the bundle's C/E says so. A signed result that isn't flattering is more useful than a cherry-picked one.
The distinction I keep coming back to: custody vs correctness. The seal proves this is the number the code produced, unaltered, re-derivable from its inputs. It does not prove the number is physically right — that's on the physics, the model, and your judgment. Separating those two cleanly is the whole idea.
What I'd like from you: run it, try to make it produce a number you can't reproduce, and tell me where the physics or the tooling is thin. Engine repo and the browser demo are in the first comment.

Palisades proposes method to retrieve 'tipped nuclear fuel assembly', but concerns remain
thenationalnews.comA battle is brewing over how to retrieve a tipped fuel assembly at the soon-to-be-restarted Palisades nuclear reactor in Michigan.
The reactor, which closed in 2022 but was purchased by Holtec International, has become a poster child for an AI and data centre-induced nuclear energy renaissance in the US.
