Discussion The worst part of night shift is when you try to sleep during the day

The loud neighbour who play with his drill the loud traffic with the honking or family in your house who have absolutely no respect for your schedule everything is trying to prevent you from having a well deserved rest for us in this world

real struggle that is wanting a beer, but being in that weird time window where the bars are closed and the stores don't sell alcohol until the sun comes up.

[Its my fault, I did not plan my night off very well.]

I hate my night shift job…

I work overnight 11-7. I never want to go to work. I’m always tired even though I get 6-8 hours of sleep during the day, sometimes more. I also have bipolar disorder and epilepsy. It’s made my epilepsy worse and my mood is always either annoyed, anxious or depressed. Yes, I am medicated for both conditions. It’s been hard to find a job that offers insurance right away because I cannot go without insurance. And I can’t just quit without a job lined up because I need the money and insurance. I don’t know what to do. I’m on my break right now and all I wanna do is sleep.

Rant I’m at breaking point

30(M) here from the UK. I’ve been working 12 hour night shifts for nearly two and a half years now and I’ve simply had enough. I work as a security guard making a little over minimum wage but manage to pull close to 2.5k a month because I’m working alot of shifts.

I want out, it’s fucking killing me. I’m exhausted all the time. The job is an absolute piece of piss but the hours are so long and my sleep pattern is on its arse and has been for a while now. I have little to no social life outside of my workplace. I have plenty of friends but hardly get to see them because my work schedule is so anti social. I work mainly Friday-Sunday so that leaves my weekends completely consumed.

I miss the mornings. That sweet spot of 7am-11am. I haven’t had a fully refreshing morning where I’m fully recharged after a good nights sleep in over a year because my sleeping pattern is completely reversed. Right now I fantasise about having a decently paying 9-5 job with normal working and social hours. I miss being out and active in the day time, walking in the park with friends and family, seeing everyone else going about their day. I work so many hours I basically live on this job site and it’s fucking depressing.

I’ve also developed a serious phone addiction because for about 90% of my job I’m sat around doing nothing. I’ve noticed my attention span has gotten worse, I used to read books for hours on end, I’d watch entire movies without looking at my phone. I’m so tired all the time. My days off are staggered about through the week so it feels like only a half day off tbh and then I’m back in work the following day. My fitness and overall health and wellbeing has plummeted drastically. I am normally a very fit and active person. I’m 30 and had visible abs and a gymnastic physique before I started this job. Now I can grab the side of my torso like a jacket.

Most of my friends work 9-5 jobs and I’m getting increasingly jealous and envious. What I would give to go to my own bed at 11pm and wake up at 7-8am. And experience the regular hustle and bustle of the day. To have the time and energy to have a life again.

Can anyone else relate? Anyone trapped in a night shift job they don’t want to be in? Anyway, rant over 😂😂.

Has anyone been hurt or burned for going above and beyond then realize they were being taken advantage of?

I think there’s a healthy division between those who say they have good work ethics and those who are stragglers acting the fool but they are smart not to make management think they can be exploited with no promotion. Then there is people like me who show up and go above and beyond always doing more than the minimum and covering shifts, staying late to help, etc.

I’d say learn from people like myself who have been burned. Once you hit your ceiling, stop trying to please people who probably talk behind your back and worse, laugh at you for doing all the extra work for them for the same pay.

It really took way too long for me to realize this and it has made me bitter and self-loathing, and that resentment follows you home and you take it out on your family using the excuse of “ I work hard and get not enough sleep”. Bottom line, you’re not entitled to treat people in your circles bad because you chose to be stupid. That’s on you (me). Anyway, I’m largely just venting since my work place insurance just fucked me over for days missed when I couldn’t even move due to a work place injury but their investigation said it was self induced and employers made an effort for revised duties.

Help Window Film

I've been contemplating if I should do window film or if I should just put up a heavy wool blanket to block out light. One of my concerns with film is that I rent and I don't want long term use to cause any window damage.

Has that been an issue for anyone?

How are my fellow Nightshifters?

I work in supported living for people with learning disabilities, currently walking laps around with the person I'm supporting, and have been since 10pm. Still, better than getting bit by him.

7 hour night-shift and I'm still struggling to make it through.

24M I've been working from 21:50 to 4:50, and let me say, I'm struggling, it's been barely a week but the first day I woke up in the middle of the morning to my 20F sister getting ready for uni (we share a room), and boy did I dislike it, I had previously worked a whole month in the morning shift from 6:00 to 14:00 so the change in sleep schedules were drastic to say the least.

One week in I have this itch in my throat that won't go away, and I think it's relevant to say that I work in a cold storage distribution center so I'm coughing and the dry climate ain't helping me out, I try toughing it out but after my shift when I got home, (I get to bed immediately when I get home to make most of the darkness outside to rest) 3 hours into my sleep I wake up to the driest throat I've ever experienced, went to the the doctor and got 3 days off and I'm really thinking about if I'm cut out for this life, the most recent shifts felt easier because I started taking caffeine before shifts (Wich I avoided 100% but seeing that rawdogging it wasn't enough I had to try something), I was never a night person and when I did work late I got out at 2-3 am and slept like 5 hours and not care because I wasn't going to be doing it everyday and work was so stimulating I couldn't fall asleep if I had to.

My question is,¿Am I overthinking this too much?,¿Did I have a rough first week and letting my anxiety get the best of me?, I wish I had more support at home to be honest but nobody at home seems to understand my struggle or don't want to. The amount of times my nightshift struggles get compared to overnight school work procrastination is wild.

Discussion what's a red flag indicator someone won't last long on night shift?

I'm training someone new to take over nightshift on weekends, and a few things they've said casually have made me wonder if they'll last longer than a couple months. Got me to thinking what qualities would indicate someone will last on nightshift, or if they will throw in the towel fairly quickly. I'm curious, what do you guys think?

Update: the new hire in question was a no call no show tonight, so I guess my hunch wasn't too far off haha.
