Out and About What’s the etiquette on this?

I was at the park with my kid today and talking to another mom friend of mine. My kid was about 15 ft away from me playing with another kid. The parent started taking pics of them playing together. It made me really uncomfortable even if it was probably innocent.

Is this normal to take photos of your kid with kids you don’t know? How do I tell them to not take pics of my kid? For reference we don’t post my kid anywhere and are selective with who we do share photos with.

Looking for help and advice please! Uncharted territory for me. Thanks!

Edit: I really wish I could ask a question to educate myself without getting downvoted into oblivion. I was just asking for etiquette/rules/etc. would love the opportunity to get information and ask follow up questions. I don’t know everything.

Childcare What do infants do all day at daycare?

I know it’s not a one to one ratio so how do they manage the infants who cant even sit up? Do they leave them in bouncers or some sitting support unless sleeping? After 10 min my LO is ready to be done with tummy time and held. Genuinely curious?

Medical Advice 32 hours postpartum and feeling completely overwhelmed... worried about my jaundiced and nauseous newborn

Hi everyone,

I really need to get this off my chest because I’m struggling so much right now.

I gave birth to my baby boy 32 hours ago, and we’re still in the hospital. His bilirubin levels are elevated, and they’re checking his blood every few hours and because they are rising he now needs phototherapy.

He's also been quite nauseous since birth, probably because he swallowed some amniotic fluid during delivery. It's been 32 hours already and he still doesn’t always want to feed, and when he does latch, he mostly seems to suckle without actually drinking much. Sometimes he spits it back up. They gave him 5 ml of supplemental milk during his last feed.

My milk hasn't really come in yet. I tried getting out some colostrum with a pump, but nothing came at all... I’ve been trying to breastfeed him every three hours since he was born, to the the point where my nipples are now sore, and I’m starting to dread feeding him because it hurts so much 😭

Then there's the exhaustion. Since the induction I’ve probably slept for about an hour in total. It's the middle of the night now, my baby is lying next to me and waking up every 20 minutes being fussy making all kinds of sounds, sometimes spitting up and crying a bit before he falls asleep again....

I feel completely overwhelmed and close to breaking down.

I'm terrified that he’ll get sick because of his bilirubin levels and because he isn't feeding properly. I know the nurses are keeping an eye on him, but I’m still so scared. Every time he wakes up crying or seems unsettled I worry that something is wrong.

I really want to breastfeed, but right now it feels like everything is going wrong at once. About 2 years ago we lost a baby at full term so this is all extremely triggering. I know it’s only been a little over a day since giving birth but it's all been so overwhelming.

Has anyone else experienced something similar in those first few days?

I think I really need some reassurance and hope right now ❤️

Babyproofing/Safety Worst nightmare happened today baby fell off bed.

I am always very careful about not leaving my baby on the bed unattended as I fear she will fall off. Well my worst nightmare happened at 3 am today. My baby has been really tough to put back to sleep when she wakes up tonight, she's 6 months and going thru a regression. Sometimes when I actually lay with her as opposed to just holding her while I sit up she seems to fall asleep easier. So she wouldn't go back down and so I laid down with her i have been so exhausted with not being able to sleep that I fell asleep. A few hours later I woke up to a thud and then my baby crying. I jumped up remembering she was in my arms and she was laying on her back on the floor. I immediately scooped her up and was able to soothe her pretty quickly. I was shaking and had tears in my eyes apologizing to her over and over again. Me and hubby turned on lights and checked her head and body for bumbs or bruises and didnt find anything. Her eyes looked normal she was interacting with us and sitting up and even wanted a bottle within a few minutes. We stayed up with her for a little while to make sure she was okay. I put her in her crib after she fell back asleep about an hour later and watched her till I fell asleep out of exhaustion. We had a pediatrician appt and everything looked okay there. But gosh there is no worse feeling than being responsible for your baby getting hurt. I will never kay down with her in the bed ever again. I know it happens to most kids at some point but knowing it was my negligence makes it all the worse.

Happy/Funny The fussy snail

If you've ever heard of the thought experiment of the snail that is constantly hunting you and if you touch it you die (in exchange for a million dollars or something), our household came up with the same idea applied to our fussy baby.

If the baby starts fussing, we say it's because the fussy snail caught up to her so we need to move her. So we walk around with her or move to another room in the house and she stops fussing for a while but when she starts up we move again. On extra fussy days we joke and say the snail has gotten very fast. If the snail seems to be sticking to her (she won't calm down even when moving around) then she must need a bath to wash it off.

So it's all the stuff one would normally do to soothe a fussy baby but much more light-hearted to blame it on the fussy snail.

Babies Being Babies What are some little signs baby knows I’m his mom?

• Upvotes

Maybe this is a silly post, but sometimes I can’t tell if my baby feels any kind of special way about me as his mom. I don’t mean that in a really sad way or anything, just that I can’t tell emotionally if he knows? He’s almost five weeks old and combo fed on a bottle. He couldn’t latch on my breast until very recently and we are currently in the hospital with him being treated for pyloric stenosis. Because his dad also feeds him I wonder, does he know I’m his mom and feel a special way about me at all, the way everyone says? Thanks everyone!

Mental Health New dad deep in the newborn trenches and I just gotta vent

New dad to a 5 week old. Man, what everyone says about parenthood is true! It is fucking hard. It's like one of those truisms you hear your whole life, see depicted in books or shows or movies, but you really can't understand it until you are in it.

The newborn phase is so rough. Just when you feel like you've got things figured out, they change on a dime. Right now we are just dealing with the gradual increase in fussiness I think most babies have until weeks 6 - 8 when things (usually) start to improve. Overall I'd have said we actually have an easy baby, but recent history has made me move him to a category of average or moderate difficulty. He's a good sleeper overnight and usually goes down by 8 or 9 pm and sleeps through until 6 am, waking up every 3 hours or so but usually falling back asleep as soon as he eats.

But man the past few days we've been struggling with an early morning witching hour or something because he gets up at 6 am and is just fussy and inconsolable for hours. I feel terrible because it's during my wife's shift (I watch him from bedtime until 4 am, and she takes over from 4 am until I wake up at 9 am). I wake up every morning with a deep sense of dread just anticipating how difficult he made things for her. If I'm going to come out to find her crying because he's been inconsolable since 6 am. He's at least been falling asleep for a long(ish) nap at around 10 after being awake for 3 - 4 hours crying and fussing.

I think I'll take the whole night tonight just so she can have a break. I've offered to flip shifts so she can have the first half of the night when he's easier. I'm honestly considering seeing if I can even hire someone to come and help for those hours from 6 am to 9 am for a couple weeks until he regulates.

We are getting through it. We will figure it out.

But oh! That's not all! Over time the list of things that will soothe him gets smaller and smaller. He used to enjoy contact napping, but now if me or my wife try to do it, he will start to squirm and fuss and kick his legs like he's trying to crawl up us until he's crying. Used to be able to rock him back and forth and shush him, but that stopped being effective. Literally the only thing that works is me, specifically me for some reason, bouncing him on a yoga ball cradled on his side. This does not work when my wife does it. I feel terrible because she's tried everything to no success: yoga ball, taking him for a walk outside, dark room, pacifier, 5S's, Snoo, sleep sack, swaddle, and she can't soothe him. Even with me doing it now it's progressed to him needing a pacifier in his mouth sometimes to be consistently effective. I dread if it gets worse and I lose even this method of helping him.

I mention he's not the most difficult baby because at least he's not crying nonstop all day. The early mornings are bad but afternoons are typically fine. But he will only nap during the hours of about 10 am to 2 pm, if he's up after 2 pm he will not sleep longer than about half an hour, needs actively soothed constantly to sleep, and it's like threading the thinnest of needles to avoid him being up for 2 - 3 hours and becoming an inconsolable overtired mess by evening.

During his long wake windows, which tend to be in the morning and in the evening, even if he's not fussing I don't know what to do with him past a few minutes! Tummy time, practicing tracking high contrast images, talking to him, picking him up and walking around and showing him different things. Its so hard not getting anything back. Not a smile or a coo or a giggle. Just doll eyes looking around, a little internal countdown until he starts to fuss after about 20 - 30 minutes of being awake. It feels so extremely draining and I hate that I feel happiest when he's sleeping, and that from the moment he wakes up I just look forward to nothing more than him falling asleep again. I feel like I am on call every waking moment and the only brief window of respite I get is at night. I wake up every morning with palpable dread as it feels I am running a marathon that never ends.

We also have no real support from in the form of friends and family. Our parents are multiple states away. I've got a brother nearby but he is useless with babies. We have some friends but not this like huge network of strong lifelong supports some people seem to have where they've got people stopping by seemingly every day to help with something. My mom is visiting at the end of the week, but honestly it's just more stress because she's 75 years old and I don't even know if she has the stamina or has retained her skills with babies from 35 years ago. We luckily are financially secure so throwing money at the issue is at least an option. We also have good mental health support.

Okay that's the venting. Now I'll go for a more positive spin on this.

I know it will pass. Every single day, every difficult moment, passes. Each thing that passes is now in my past. It's done and I don't have to relive that experience. I know he will grow. I know he will eventually smile at us, and be excited to see us, and giggle and even talk. He will develop interests and hobbies. He will be one of the most valuable connections in my life and will be someone I couldn't see how I'd live without.

As I've read on here a million times, the days are long but the weeks are short. I'm simultaneously surprised that it's already been 5-weeks, and at the same time it feels like an looping eternity that never ends.

And I have it comparatively easy! He sleeps at night, he CAN be soothed, albeit with seemingly a single method right now, so I don't think he would technically be considered colicky. Some of the horror stories I read on here when I'm trying to keep sane are unbelieveable. With shift sleeping and him generally being a good night sleeper I'd say I'm averaging at least 7 hours at night. To you parents operating for weeks on 3 hours, my heart goes out to you.

This is tough guys. And for all my complaining, my wife's got it so much worse between having to physically recover after childbirth and having to pump every 3 hours. Not to mention having to do THIS immediately after 9 months of pregnancy.

Single parents, parents to twins, HOW DO YOU DO THIS???? My respect to ALL of you is endless.

I look forward to revisiting and updating this after a few months. Some of the most helpful posts I've come across on here are people who were at wits end, only to make an update 6 months later about their burgeoning best friend.

Sleep Did you wake your newborn for night feeds?

As a FTM I followed the waking baby up every 2 hours through the night to feed until they reach their birth weight and honestly I think I did that even past that as I was very keen for my baby to eat often. (Baby was considered a ‘healthy’ weight but on the smaller end of things). I think I then became anxious about not waking baby for feeds and letting them go hungry etc.

Looking back and just thinking if I had another baby - I was just wondering what the normal is? I really feel that my baby then started to wake through the night out of habit and it had a knock on effect on sleep from then out. My baby has never been a great sleeper. However, I have in-laws whose baby started sleeping through the night at 1 month! I just wonder would I of had a different experience if I allowed baby to take the lead with hunger over night? I guess I’ll never know…

I have recently cut down night feeds to just one (5 months PP) and I already feel it’s helped.

Would love to hear others opinions!

Happy/Funny My baby screams like I'm killing her while I'm brushing her teeth

Teeth brushing. Oh man. She's 18 months old and every day there's a two big fight. She's screaming like I'm knifing her, literally. I must strap her with my two legs while I'm doing it and she's crying-screaming so hard and I'm like "oh yeah baby cry more" (silently in my mind lol) because while she's crying she opens her mouth wide open. 😅

WHEN it will gonna end?

Mental Health Bottle refusing baby - I am so sick of well-meaning advice

Everyone has a suggestion and trust me - I’ve tried all the things people suggest. Have you tried going out of the room? Letting your husband feed her? Increasing nipple size? Pigeon bottles? Hot milk, freshly pumped milk, waiting until she’s super hungry? Yes yes and yes. I know people mean well but I’m just so tired from 5 months of exclusively breastfeeding and don’t want the advice anymore

Even if it took a lot of time, patience, or effort, what’s something you did early on that set you and your baby up well later, like at the one-year mark, the toddler years, or even early childhood?

Mental Health New dad

Hiya. Legit baby is only 4-5 days old and I feel like I am failing horribly. My partner isn’t getting much of any sleep maybe 2 hours a night because they are up pumping and refuse to sleep most times. The baby is acting normal but my poor boy has a rash or maybe it’s stupid flea bites as I saw them on my poor boy I’m vacuuming everything and washed all his clothes and all our bedding in non fragrance soap and have the cats getting treated for the fleas. I’ve been taking 45 min naps when I can in between taking care of baby. Idk if I’m just insane but it feels like I’m failing him and honestly I worry if I am properly capable at all at this rate.

Mental Health Baby blues again at 4 months pp?

Did anyone get a baby blues round 2 around 4 months postpartum?
I went through typical “baby blues” days 3-8 postpartum, but after that felt so much better. My mental health hasn’t been too much a problem since then aside from usual frustrations of figuring out a new baby. However, the last day or so I’ve been feeling sooooo down. Between not getting good sleep the past few nights and I’m wondering if there’s another hormonal shift happening? Today I’ve just been crying. The same feelings of loneliness, overwhelm ect. Have come back. It also doesn’t help that seasons are changing so my seasonal depression may be starting to sneak in.
Did anyone have this happen to them? Does anyone know if there’s a second huge hormonal shift around 4 months? I also exclusively breastfed incase that makes a difference at all.

Happy/Funny High-pressure nocturnal urination soaking bed in my bus.

My 6-month-old has recently developed a remarkable talent for choosing the precise moment her nighttime nappy is opened to unleash a pee-powered water cannon. No matter how ninja-fast I slide the fresh nappy beneath her bum (always leaving the old one underneath as backup), she somehow manages to soak the entire area beneath her, in her impressive, desperate, abdominal fuelled explosion.

Now, I'm quite the seasoned nappy-changing ninja, operating by muscle memory in the confined quarters of a bus, executing a well-rehearsed manoeuvre without so much as a photon of assistance. So I guess adding a little light could help.

And so, I find myself sitting in a puddle of my daughter's pee, breastfeeding in the dead of night, desperately trying to hold on to the last shreds of my sanity. (I'll consider adding a towel perhaps? Just wanted to share my misery to gain some sadistic amusement before I go mental).

Postpartum Recovery chill babies?

i see people posting their newborns, and they’re just hanging out? being ok with being carried around a public space?

anytime my baby is awake, he is screaming for the boob or is mad that his diaper is being changed.

is there something i’m doing wrong? he’s 3 weeks and 2 days, so i know he’s still pretty young… but i wish there were more times for us to bond or spend time together outside of breastfeeding. i feel like this is taking a toll on my mental health because of the anxiety that comes with these thoughts

I'm a stay-at-home mom to a 10-month-old and this Friday I have a full day off aka I do whatever the heck I want and hubby is home with the LO.

I have from wakeup to bedtime (still do bedtime) But I also might go out after bedtime :P

Any ideas for the day???

Going to start the day with a massage 😉😉

I might also go see a movie. I'm just trying to think of things that are literally impossible with a baby that I miss lol

Happy/Funny I LOVE daycare

1.8k Upvotes

Just a little positivity for anyone who feels the same way, or is struggling with the decision to go back to work, or is tired of hearing all the negativity surrounding a necessity for most of us:

I am obsessed with daycare. We love our center, our baby loves her teachers, and her teachers love her so much. I literally watch my daughter light up at drop off, and then listen to her teachers gush about her at pick up every day. She gets excited to see her little friends and comes home with new skills on a weekly basis. It means SO much to me to have another safe/happy place for her to spend her time.

Obviously I feel all the drawbacks we’ve heard about constantly- cost, illness, missing her during the day etc. but overall it’s been a net positive x100 for our family.

Before going back to work I felt so guilty, but I’m now realizing maybe I just felt like I should feel guilty? Just wanted to share that you are not alone if you also love daycare and working - so much love to all the daycare professionals out there!

ETA because I keep thinking of things I love about daycare: it is so nice to have the input of professionals with so much baby experience. They’ve helped with increasing solids, experimenting with bottle sizes, nap times, etc. I wish all of my insanely high tuition went directly to her teachers!

Feeding Ped suggested introducing solids at 4mo

he watches us eat, he grabs at cups. He holds his head well and he can sit up if you’re stabilizing him, like I how I hold him on my hip. I was always told to start at six months, but she said we could start now because it’s better to introduce allergens early. Where is everyone else at with this?

she also said she was mad at WIC for keeping the recommendation at 6 mo when new research suggest allergens starts at 4mo

Mental Health FTM struggling with shifts and separation

First time mom to a 7 day old, and my husband and I have started to do shifts where he is on baby duty from 9-3 and I'm on 3-9. I am struggling really bad with the baby blues and post partum anxiety and when the sun sets and it's time for me to go to bed, I feel so sad and anxious to turn over the reigns. I get so anxious about not watching him 24/7 and it's so hard to stay in bed when I hear him cry. I know babies cry, but it just breaks my heart every time I hear it. My husband is amazing and patient and I know our son is well taken care of, and I try not to get up when I hear him cry because they need bonding time. I just for some reason can't turn off the part of my brain that gets anxious about sleeping, even though I really need it. Looking for any advice!

Sleep Sleep rant!!

New parent here and feeling totally overwhelmed by all the conflicting info I’m getting on newborn sleep. It seems like there are two camps.

One seems to prioritize parents independence; white noise, blackout curtains, don’t let them fall asleep in your arms, bedtime routines, and more rigid training/schedules when they’re old enough.

Then there‘s the approach that seems to prioritize a baby’s need for closeness to their parent. Babywearing, contact naps, and on the more controversial end, bed sharing. Don’t even think about sleep training!

The first camp is telling me if I don’t do these things my baby will never learn to sleep independently, and I do want that eventually. But the latter camp is telling me that my baby being close to me is necessary for their nervous system to develop and for them to form healthy attachments. And I really want that for him.

The one thing they have in common is they all want me to buy their online course!🙄

I don’t want my baby to always need to be in a pitch black room with white noise to be able to sleep. I’m not a homebody and we like to travel so we don’t want to be too rigid. Letting him nap in a wrap or carrier while I go out sounds awesome. But I want him to get good sleep and be able to sleep independently. Is there some sort of middle ground here? Had anyone had success with sort of a balance?

Sleep 7 month old suddenly impossible to settle at night. I’m exhausted.

• Upvotes

My 7 month old used to give us decent 5-7 hour stretches, but lately nights have become an absolute nightmare.

He wakes every 1–2 hours, screams unless I breastfeed him, and transferring him back to his crib is nearly impossible, especially after 4 AM. He goes down at 8pm, and usually wakes up around 6:30am. He is exclusively breastfed. Last night I had him sleep in my arms just so that I can have some peace and silence.

We’ve spent the last 10 nights trying to settle him without nursing. Both my husband and I have managed it several times, but there’s been no real improvement.

Daytime naps are usually 40-50 minutes, and he’s perfectly happy and energetic during the day. Last night he only slept 9 hours total and woke up at 5:30 AM ready to party. He has 3 day naps. And even those are not ideal, but I just can’t find a way to help him sleep longer. I would rather fix nights first.

I really need help, as I am exhausted, and am staring to dread even going to sleep. Has anyone experienced this around 7 months? What actually helped, and how long did it last?
