Sleep 7 month old suddenly impossible to settle at night. I’m exhausted.

• Upvotes

My 7 month old used to give us decent 5-7 hour stretches, but lately nights have become an absolute nightmare.

He wakes every 1–2 hours, screams unless I breastfeed him, and transferring him back to his crib is nearly impossible, especially after 4 AM. He goes down at 8pm, and usually wakes up around 6:30am. He is exclusively breastfed. Last night I had him sleep in my arms just so that I can have some peace and silence.

We’ve spent the last 10 nights trying to settle him without nursing. Both my husband and I have managed it several times, but there’s been no real improvement.

Daytime naps are usually 40-50 minutes, and he’s perfectly happy and energetic during the day. Last night he only slept 9 hours total and woke up at 5:30 AM ready to party. He has 3 day naps. And even those are not ideal, but I just can’t find a way to help him sleep longer. I would rather fix nights first.

I really need help, as I am exhausted, and am staring to dread even going to sleep. Has anyone experienced this around 7 months? What actually helped, and how long did it last?

Babies Being Babies What are some little signs baby knows I’m his mom?

• Upvotes

Maybe this is a silly post, but sometimes I can’t tell if my baby feels any kind of special way about me as his mom. I don’t mean that in a really sad way or anything, just that I can’t tell emotionally if he knows? He’s almost five weeks old and combo fed on a bottle. He couldn’t latch on my breast until very recently and we are currently in the hospital with him being treated for pyloric stenosis. Because his dad also feeds him I wonder, does he know I’m his mom and feel a special way about me at all, the way everyone says? Thanks everyone!

Babyproofing/Safety Worst nightmare happened today baby fell off bed.

I am always very careful about not leaving my baby on the bed unattended as I fear she will fall off. Well my worst nightmare happened at 3 am today. My baby has been really tough to put back to sleep when she wakes up tonight, she's 6 months and going thru a regression. Sometimes when I actually lay with her as opposed to just holding her while I sit up she seems to fall asleep easier. So she wouldn't go back down and so I laid down with her i have been so exhausted with not being able to sleep that I fell asleep. A few hours later I woke up to a thud and then my baby crying. I jumped up remembering she was in my arms and she was laying on her back on the floor. I immediately scooped her up and was able to soothe her pretty quickly. I was shaking and had tears in my eyes apologizing to her over and over again. Me and hubby turned on lights and checked her head and body for bumbs or bruises and didnt find anything. Her eyes looked normal she was interacting with us and sitting up and even wanted a bottle within a few minutes. We stayed up with her for a little while to make sure she was okay. I put her in her crib after she fell back asleep about an hour later and watched her till I fell asleep out of exhaustion. We had a pediatrician appt and everything looked okay there. But gosh there is no worse feeling than being responsible for your baby getting hurt. I will never kay down with her in the bed ever again. I know it happens to most kids at some point but knowing it was my negligence makes it all the worse.

Out and About What’s the etiquette on this?

I was at the park with my kid today and talking to another mom friend of mine. My kid was about 15 ft away from me playing with another kid. The parent started taking pics of them playing together. It made me really uncomfortable even if it was probably innocent.

Is this normal to take photos of your kid with kids you don’t know? How do I tell them to not take pics of my kid? For reference we don’t post my kid anywhere and are selective with who we do share photos with.

Looking for help and advice please! Uncharted territory for me. Thanks!

Edit: I really wish I could ask a question to educate myself without getting downvoted into oblivion. I was just asking for etiquette/rules/etc. would love the opportunity to get information and ask follow up questions. I don’t know everything.

Medical Advice 32 hours postpartum and feeling completely overwhelmed... worried about my jaundiced and nauseous newborn

Hi everyone,

I really need to get this off my chest because I’m struggling so much right now.

I gave birth to my baby boy 32 hours ago, and we’re still in the hospital. His bilirubin levels are elevated, and they’re checking his blood every few hours and because they are rising he now needs phototherapy.

He's also been quite nauseous since birth, probably because he swallowed some amniotic fluid during delivery. It's been 32 hours already and he still doesn’t always want to feed, and when he does latch, he mostly seems to suckle without actually drinking much. Sometimes he spits it back up. They gave him 5 ml of supplemental milk during his last feed.

My milk hasn't really come in yet. I tried getting out some colostrum with a pump, but nothing came at all... I’ve been trying to breastfeed him every three hours since he was born, to the the point where my nipples are now sore, and I’m starting to dread feeding him because it hurts so much 😭

Then there's the exhaustion. Since the induction I’ve probably slept for about an hour in total. It's the middle of the night now, my baby is lying next to me and waking up every 20 minutes being fussy making all kinds of sounds, sometimes spitting up and crying a bit before he falls asleep again....

I feel completely overwhelmed and close to breaking down.

I'm terrified that he’ll get sick because of his bilirubin levels and because he isn't feeding properly. I know the nurses are keeping an eye on him, but I’m still so scared. Every time he wakes up crying or seems unsettled I worry that something is wrong.

I really want to breastfeed, but right now it feels like everything is going wrong at once. About 2 years ago we lost a baby at full term so this is all extremely triggering. I know it’s only been a little over a day since giving birth but it's all been so overwhelming.

Has anyone else experienced something similar in those first few days?

I think I really need some reassurance and hope right now ❤️

Out and About Losing friends during postpartum

For over 4 years, two coworkers and I were very close friends. When I had my first baby, now a 9-month-old infant whom I am exclusively breastfeeding, meaning I am still deeply in postpartum; both went completely radio silent for months. One left me on read even after I offered to drive my baby to her house to hang out, and the other vanished entirely. The only time they reached out was right before my return date, specifically after seeing my name pop up on the weekly work schedule.

Once I logged back in, they kept prodding and questioning my tone, repeatedly asking why I seemed distant. Feeling pressured to explain, I sent a group message laying out that their absence while I was navigating postpartum and caring for an infant deeply hurt, and stated that to keep the peace while working remotely, I wanted our interactions to remain strictly cordial and professional moving forward.

They exploded. The one who left me on read-who already has kids herself-threw a massive tantrum, telling me having a baby isn't an "excuse" for everything and claiming that because she was going through a rough time herself, I was selfish for not constantly checking in on her. The other offered apologies mixed with excuses about how time slipped away. Since then, they have tried forcing resets with small talks about things we used to talk about on normal days as friends and accused me on company chat of being "cold and playing games" because I refuse to go back to being besties.

Mental Health FTM struggling with shifts and separation

First time mom to a 7 day old, and my husband and I have started to do shifts where he is on baby duty from 9-3 and I'm on 3-9. I am struggling really bad with the baby blues and post partum anxiety and when the sun sets and it's time for me to go to bed, I feel so sad and anxious to turn over the reigns. I get so anxious about not watching him 24/7 and it's so hard to stay in bed when I hear him cry. I know babies cry, but it just breaks my heart every time I hear it. My husband is amazing and patient and I know our son is well taken care of, and I try not to get up when I hear him cry because they need bonding time. I just for some reason can't turn off the part of my brain that gets anxious about sleeping, even though I really need it. Looking for any advice!

Mental Health New dad

Hiya. Legit baby is only 4-5 days old and I feel like I am failing horribly. My partner isn’t getting much of any sleep maybe 2 hours a night because they are up pumping and refuse to sleep most times. The baby is acting normal but my poor boy has a rash or maybe it’s stupid flea bites as I saw them on my poor boy I’m vacuuming everything and washed all his clothes and all our bedding in non fragrance soap and have the cats getting treated for the fleas. I’ve been taking 45 min naps when I can in between taking care of baby. Idk if I’m just insane but it feels like I’m failing him and honestly I worry if I am properly capable at all at this rate.

Sleep How to handle a late day car nap

I’m trying not to let our days be rigidly ruled by nap schedules but it’s frustrating to know what to do since she gets lulled to sleep in the car.

For example, her final wake window is 3 hours typically. We ended up going to grab takeout this evening and naturally she fell asleep for 15 minutes. How would you handle bedtime from there? Would you subtract 15 minutes from the final wake window? Or would you restart the entire wake window from when she woke up? I’m dreading a very late 9pm bedtime…

Babies Being Babies 5 months, started seeing red streaks in diaper… cmpa allergy? NSFW

Baby’s gone through 2.5 weeks of green poos, discomfort and diarrhea after rotavirus shot, and now seeing little specks then streaks of red blood in diaper. Pediatrician said it’s a bit late for cmpa to show up but possible or it’s connected to after having intestinal virus or digestive issues/diarrhea.

She does have mucus in diapers but she’s had that since like 7-8 weeks old and associated that with all of the drool she’s had. No eczema though.

Curious if anyone has had this and what it ended up being? Will likely start eliminating dairy/eggs/soy as Pediatrician said to if blood increased

Mental Health PURPLE crying

At what month does purple crying end? My baby is almost 5 months and I still find myself having to leave the room for a while to let him cry. Especially by about hour 10 of the day alone with me, he really melts down.

Sleep Did you wake your newborn for night feeds?

As a FTM I followed the waking baby up every 2 hours through the night to feed until they reach their birth weight and honestly I think I did that even past that as I was very keen for my baby to eat often. (Baby was considered a ‘healthy’ weight but on the smaller end of things). I think I then became anxious about not waking baby for feeds and letting them go hungry etc.

Looking back and just thinking if I had another baby - I was just wondering what the normal is? I really feel that my baby then started to wake through the night out of habit and it had a knock on effect on sleep from then out. My baby has never been a great sleeper. However, I have in-laws whose baby started sleeping through the night at 1 month! I just wonder would I of had a different experience if I allowed baby to take the lead with hunger over night? I guess I’ll never know…

I have recently cut down night feeds to just one (5 months PP) and I already feel it’s helped.

Would love to hear others opinions!

Travel Flying soon. Just Baby and me.

Hi all! Flying soon with my baby across the country. She’ll be 9 months old when we fly. I’m having some slight anxiety and need help. Total flight time will be roughly 14hrs.
1. Is a diaper bag considered a personal item?

  1. I read on TSA’s website formula is ok to bring. Has anyone had issues bringing ready-to-feed liquid formula through security? Do they wear separate gloves when checking milk?

  2. Since the flight will be long, should I sleep while baby sleeps?? I’m highly considering staying up the entire flight

  3. Debating on buying the Momcozy TuckGo stroller or baby wearing. Will probably bring both to be safe.

  4. Recommendations on changing diapers during the flight? (Please don’t yell at me lol)

I’m happy to read any and all tips about flying with a baby.

Thank you!!!

Sleep Should I be more concerned?

My son has never been a good sleeper. At about 10 months, he dropped to one nap, but unhappily so. Turns out he had an iron deficiency. We’ve been doing supplements since early August. September was much better. October has been a shit show.

Also in August, when he was approaching 11 months, daycare put him on one nap due to moving him to a new classroom. He still sucks at sleeping at night, but mood is lovely, and he takes one 90-minute nap a day.

Now he’s 13 months. In the past three weeks, there have been four separate occasions where he’s refused that one nap. I know toddlers do this, but most kids his age are inconsistent about taking their second nap, not their only nap. On most of those no-nap days, I actually did get a nap out of him several hours later (length and timing varied). But today, I do not see a nap on the horizon and have tried all the tricks I have.

So… how worried would you be about your 13m baby seemed to resist nap entirely 1-2x per week? He just seems really young for this behavior.

Sleep Sleep rant!!

New parent here and feeling totally overwhelmed by all the conflicting info I’m getting on newborn sleep. It seems like there are two camps.

One seems to prioritize parents independence; white noise, blackout curtains, don’t let them fall asleep in your arms, bedtime routines, and more rigid training/schedules when they’re old enough.

Then there‘s the approach that seems to prioritize a baby’s need for closeness to their parent. Babywearing, contact naps, and on the more controversial end, bed sharing. Don’t even think about sleep training!

The first camp is telling me if I don’t do these things my baby will never learn to sleep independently, and I do want that eventually. But the latter camp is telling me that my baby being close to me is necessary for their nervous system to develop and for them to form healthy attachments. And I really want that for him.

The one thing they have in common is they all want me to buy their online course!🙄

I don’t want my baby to always need to be in a pitch black room with white noise to be able to sleep. I’m not a homebody and we like to travel so we don’t want to be too rigid. Letting him nap in a wrap or carrier while I go out sounds awesome. But I want him to get good sleep and be able to sleep independently. Is there some sort of middle ground here? Had anyone had success with sort of a balance?

Sleep Sleep struggles

My 4.5 month old slept great in her snoo until a month ago. Right at about 3.5 months her naps became a battle and then about a week late nighttime sleep totally fell apart.

We have decent days and horrible days, but the general situation is:

- daytime sleep: rock to sleep, will sometime transfer to crib sleeping for 1 full sleep cycle (37 mins). If going down is a fight, nurse to sleep. Typically 1 contact nap a day to get more time.
****this week daytime sleep re-fell apart and we now fail every transfer attempt so all naps for the past 3 days have been contact

- nighttime sleep: is a total disaster. For a week or so she was going down in her snoo for a decent couple hour stretch, and then eventually getting into an hourly wake-up routine - likely struggling to connect sleep cycles. Last night she wouldn’t sleep on a vessel for longer than 20 min. I’m holding her and trying and failing repeat transfers. We eventually kick dad & dog out of the bed and cosleep. We tired moving her to crib to see if space helps and so far no.

I don’t want to sleep train. She is inconsolable when upset surrounding sleep and as of now I’m
Not comfortable leaving her in that state. She’s never successfully calmed down without at the very least being held - even pats or rubs etc in the bassinet / crib fail.

Has anyone had this bad of a sleeper and come out the other end?

Sleep Weird nap lengths at 3m old

My 14 week old has been stuck in 30 min crap nap phase for several weeks now but all of a sudden her single cycle naps seem to be lasting 40-50 minutes instead of the previous 31 minutes. I know it’s a single cycle because she has always woken after the exact same amount of time whether in the bassinet, carrier, pram or car. Have her cycles lengthened or something?! It’s not long enough for her to have connected cycles, but it’s longer than before and seems to have happened quite suddenly. Is this the 4 month sleep cycle change or something?! Obv I’ll take ANY longer nap I can get… I’m just confused at the length of them suddenly changing!

Out and About First late outing - 5 months old

Hey everyone - FTM here planning to take my 5 month old trick or treating for Halloween. Mainly just walk her around in her costume. We will be going around 6PM and likely just for an hour. Were going to my best friends house + neighborhood. She normally does bedtime between 6-7pm so im worried pushing her bedtime back by 1-2 hours will negatively impact her. Any advice? First time taking her out during bedtime hours so I have no idea how to plan for it. Any advice is welcomed!

Feeding Ped suggested introducing solids at 4mo

he watches us eat, he grabs at cups. He holds his head well and he can sit up if you’re stabilizing him, like I how I hold him on my hip. I was always told to start at six months, but she said we could start now because it’s better to introduce allergens early. Where is everyone else at with this?

she also said she was mad at WIC for keeping the recommendation at 6 mo when new research suggest allergens starts at 4mo

Sleep How to handle naps for a second child

My second son is 10 months old and I also have a 4-year-old. Both are home with me full time. I’ve really struggled with managing the baby’s sleep, and as he’s getting older, it’s getting harder and harder to get the baby to sleep when we’re out and about and takes much longer to put him down at home. My 4yo is very patient about it all, but I can’t leave him alone for extended periods while putting the baby down.

He rarely sleeps more than 40 minutes without me having to intervene and rock him to stay asleep. I can’t keep doing it and neglecting my 4yo. We have attempted sleep training, even hired a consultant to guide us on sleep schedules. Nothing is working for us and baby’s naps are not improving at all.

How do you handle naps with multiple kids at home? Do you just give up and let baby be a tired wreck, even if it results in worse overnight sleep? I feel that I’ve tried everything and I’m burnt out.

Tips to Share Kids mattress suggestions? Little one is finally sleeping through the night and I want to keep it that way

Hello, fellow parents :) Posting here because I want to know how did you decide when it's time to get your child a better mattress? Our 4yo is still using the basic infant mattress we got her back then and we're not sure if it’s time to upgrade or not.

He's getting taller so he doesn't have much room to stretch out anymore… BUT he’s still sleeping through the night so we're a little hesitant to change anything. He's a pretty active sleeper, rolls around a lot, and sometimes wakes up sweaty even with the fan on. We're thinking of getting him Bear Cub twin mattress and hope that it can last until he's a bit older. Any feedback on this mattress? Are there other options that are as good or even better? Our budget is around $400–$600.

Skills and Milestones Transitioning to arms out?!?

Hey there, trying to survive transitioning my four month-old to an arms out sleep sack as he is learning to roll over - hasn’t fully rolled over by himself yet, but he’s almost there. The question is, how the heck do I deal with this? He will not sleep and wakes up every two seconds after smacking himself in the face/rubbing his eyes. I know this isn’t a new problem for most, but I don’t know what to do. We’ve been trying for over a week. He can roll onto his side but again, hasn’t rolled over on his own but it feels like he could any day. I desperately want to put him to sleep in his Magic Merlin sleep suit or Zippadee Zip. HALP.
