Analysis/Video Frank Dikötter And The True History Of Communist China

Senior Fellow Frank Dikötter, a renowned historian of modern China, joins Uncommon Knowledge to discuss his new book, Red Dawn over China: How Communism Conquered a Quarter of Humanity with host Peter M. Robinson. Drawing from tightly controlled Chinese Communist Party archives and Soviet Comintern documents, Dikötter systematically dismantles decades of romanticized Western myths—originally popularized by journalist Edgar Snow—surrounding the rise of Mao Zedong. He details how the Chinese Communist Party was a deeply unpopular, marginal movement that was heavily armed by Joseph Stalin rather than gaining organic peasant support, eventually taking the country through the devastation of civil war and the Red Army’s strategic handover of Manchuria. Shifting to modern-day geopolitics, the conversation explores how the “enforced amnesia” around this history shapes the systemic constraints of China's current single-party state. Dikötter analyzes the vulnerabilities behind the CCP’s economic facade, Xi Jinping's relentless military purges, the critical importance of arming Taiwan, and why the West must counter a regime built on deep-seated political paranoia.

Iran U.S. Links Chinese Satellite Imagery to Iranian Strike That Killed Three Troops

Before Iran carried out its attack that killed three U.S. troops in July, Tehran acquired high-resolution satellite images of the base in Jordan from Chinese entities, according to U.S. officials familiar with details of the incident.

It is the clearest evidence so far that Chinese support for Iran during the war has had lethal consequences for U.S. forces, according to the officials, who say the U.S. has connected the imagery to the attack.

The U.S. officials declined to identify the Chinese entities that supplied the imagery to Iran and didn’t allege direct involvement by Beijing. Tehran procured the images both before and after the attack.

But the finding could deepen U.S.-China tensions ahead of the planned summit between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Sept. 24, after months of frustration with Beijing’s rejection of U.S. warnings about Chinese companies providing imagery to Iran.

Senior U.S. officials raised the imagery linked to the July 17 attack with their Chinese counterparts, who pushed back and demanded proof, the U.S. officials said. China has repeatedly dismissed Washington’s concerns, refusing to acknowledge that any Chinese companies are engaged in such activity, the officials said.

China’s Foreign Ministry has accused “certain entities” of trying to link Beijing to the conflict.

In the July 17 attack, Iranian ballistic missiles struck a housing area at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in northeastern Jordan where American troops had been sleeping. Three soldiers were killed and four others were wounded and medically evacuated. Iran also targeted manned and unmanned aircraft at the base, other U.S. officials said.

The attack was one of three separate missile strikes on the base in 24 hours and marked a significant escalation in the war. The strike resulted in the first U.S. deaths since an April ceasefire, and exposed the difficulty of protecting U.S. forces even at a heavily defended installation. It also raised alarms about Iran’s improved ability to hit American targets.

The strikes on the base came after senior Trump officials spent months warning their Chinese counterparts that Chinese companies were providing satellite imagery Iran could use to target U.S. personnel and assets in the region, officials say. The Trump administration sanctioned several Chinese companies in May, saying that supplying satellite imagery to Iran “threatens American and partner personnel.”

Within three days of the July attack, Iran released high-resolution images showing damage to three separate areas of the base. Publicly available lower-resolution satellite imagery analyzed by The Wall Street Journal showed damage to more than 20 structures across the three areas of the base.

Trump has told his team that it is a priority for him to maintain good relations with China and Xi in particular. Senior U.S. officials have responded by trying to avoid public confrontations with Beijing that could overshadow or derail plans for the summit. A White House official said no assistance Iran was receiving from outside actors had enhanced its ability to attack the United States, without addressing the finding.

Publicly, senior Trump officials have played down the impact of any Chinese assistance to Iran. Days after the July 17 attack, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Asked afterward if the Chinese were providing Iran with targeting information, he declined to answer directly, saying “nothing that China has done has in any way changed the trajectory of the conflict.”

Earlier in the war, U.S. attacks on Iranian radar, satellites and other equipment degraded the regime’s ability to see the battlefield. Iran often hit locations of lesser military significance where nothing significant was located—an indication that Iran didn’t have a clear picture of U.S. bases.

However, the targeting appeared to improve over the summer, officials say.

Fresh, high-resolution images from Chinese sources could reveal recent changes at a base and help Iran “select the most impactful targets in a timely manner,” said Jim Lamson, a former CIA analyst who specialized in Iran’s military and weapons. Post-strike imagery could help Iran assess the effectiveness of the strikes and decide whether and where to attack again.

The imagery likely would have been one of several intelligence streams used by Iran, analysts and former officials say. Iran’s military also draws from its own satellites and human sources, as well as intelligence and imagery from Russia, according to U.S. officials.

The imagery is part of a broader flow of Chinese technology and data used by Iran, including navigation services, and components used in drones and missiles. Taken together, it “starts to look pretty substantial” in improving Iran’s long-range strike capabilities, says Lamson.

Unlike some of the other intelligence available to Iran, Chinese technology and imagery are areas Washington can try to disrupt through sanctions and pressure on Beijing, officials say.

U.S. officials are also concerned that China could be helping Iran stalk American naval assets as well, according to people familiar with the matter. In recent days, Iran has fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and other warships. While Central Command said all the attacks failed, officials described some as close calls and said Iran’s ability to target moving ships appeared to be improving.

China’s satellite industry often blurs the line between commercial and state companies, U.S. officials and analysts say, because even ostensibly private companies operate under extensive government oversight, and many have links to the government or the Chinese Communist Party.

In May, the Trump administration sanctioned three Chinese companies—MizarVision, Earth Eye and Chang Guang—that it said was providing, collecting or publishing imagery that Iran could use to target U.S. forces. State Department officials last year accused Chang Guang of providing satellite imagery that directly supported attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, calling the support “unacceptable.”

The administration has briefed lawmakers on the intelligence committees in recent weeks on the support both Russia and China are providing to Iran, according to congressional officials.

Ukraine/Russia War Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, October 19, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org

Key Takeaways

Ukrainian officials continue to report disruptions to US assistance to Ukraine.

Devastating Russian drone and missile strikes on the night of October 18 to 19 heavily damaged energy and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine — killing at least four and wounding at least 55.

Daytime Russian strikes are also inflicting significant civilian casualties.

The Kremlin is reportedly pushing for a trilateral meeting between the United States, Russia, and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), likely as part of a dual-pronged effort to present itself as a diplomatic peer while supporting structures that challenge Western-led international organizations.

Recent aggressive Russian military satellite maneuvers are a continuation of Russia’s space policy against third country satellites since at least 2022.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Lyman tactical area, east of Dobropillya, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Iran Iran Update, October 19, 2026

Key Takeaways

The Houthis are adopting new tactics to bypass Saudi air defenses, including launching various munitions at Saudi targets simultaneously and targeting locations without air defense coverage, according to an unspecified senior US official briefed on Saudi air defense efforts speaking to the Wall Street Journal on October 18.

The Houthis’ strike tactics against Saudi Arabia demonstrate how Iran and the Axis of Resistance are learning and sharing tactics to more effectively bypass adversary air defenses. This does not necessarily mean that the Houthis learned these tactics from Iran, however.

The Houthis are deploying reinforcements to Taiz Governorate, likely to try to break Yemeni government defenses surrounding Taiz City. The Houthis have attempted to make multiple advances near the city in recent days, but Yemeni government-aligned forces have largely repelled these advances.

The Iranian regime’s appointment of Mehrdad Akhlaghi, who has extensive experience in missile technology, as Iran’s new defense minister indicates that the regime is prioritizing the reconstitution of its missile program. Akhlaghi stated that the regime will rebuild its defense industrial base in areas that are less vulnerable to airstrikes.

The Iraqi federal government probably agreed to grant three Iranian-backed Iraqi militias control of some government ministries as part of a broader disarmament agreement between the Iraqi federal government and Iranian-backed Iraqi factions. These Iranian-backed Iraqi militias will likely continue to circumvent the Iraqi government’s disarmament efforts even after receiving control of some Iraqi ministries, however.

Executive Summary:

Russia has expanded its nuclear cooperation with Brazil this year, increasing uranium processing contracts by 25 percent and becoming Brazil’s largest uranium supplier.

Moscow is moving beyond uranium exports toward deeper integration into Brazil’s nuclear fuel cycle, including conversion, enrichment, and potentially domestic uranium extraction.

Rosatom—Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation—is seeking to broaden its presence in Brazil through critical mineral projects, small modular reactors, and potential participation in nuclear power plant construction.

Brazil’s plans to expand nuclear generating capacity present new opportunities for Moscow, but financing constraints and Brasília’s pursuit of technological sovereignty could limit Russia’s ambitions.

Iran Iran Update, October 16, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org
1 Upvotes

Key Takeaways

The Iranian regime has reportedly found ways to ship a very limited and relatively inconsequential amount of petroleum product exports via maritime routes despite the US naval blockade. Iran’s ability to export energy products continues to be severely hampered by the US economic campaign, however.

The Houthis are using imitative communications deception in an attempt to disrupt Yemeni government-aligned forces’ command and control and hinder government efforts to defend Taiz City.

Yemeni government-aligned forces regained control of Dhubab Airport on the southern Red Sea coastal plain by October 15.

Yemeni government-aligned forces are likely continuing to gradually advance further north and west in Marib Governorate along a major ground line of communication (GLOC) extending to Sanaa, Yemen’s capital.

Key Takeaways

Ukrainian forces reportedly regained unrestricted access to Starshield on October 15, following in-motion speed restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield communications network over Ukraine.

High-ranking Kremlin officials continue to emphasize that there is and was no energy ceasefire agreement, rejecting any meaningful concept of a ceasefire proposal.

Ukrainian forces struck six Russian Su-34M fighter-bombers at the Borisoglebsk Military Airfield in Voronezh Oblast overnight on October 14 to 15.

Likely Russian drones struck four civilian vessels in the Black Sea, including two commercial tankers in Romanian territorial waters on October 14 and 15.

Ukrainian forces likely struck the Ryazan Oil Refinery in Ryazan Oblast overnight on October 14 to 15. Russia launched two Kh-59 cruise missiles and 580 drones against Ukraine overnight on October 14 to 15 and 138 drones during the day on October 15.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced north of Kupyansk and southwest of Orikhiv.

Iran Iran Update, October 15, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org
2 Upvotes

Key Takeaways

The Houthis attacked Yemeni government-controlled cities with missiles and drones, likely to weaken the Yemeni government’s legitimacy and possibly to disrupt government counteroffensives. The Houthis’ strikes in Aden likely sought to generate an informational effect and undermine Yemen’s already weak, fractured government.

The Houthis have demonstrated limited capabilities to target Saudi fighter aircraft in Yemeni airspace, but these capabilities are currently insufficient to significantly disrupt the ongoing Saudi air campaign. Houthi forces fired a surface-to-air missile (SAM) that struck a Saudi-operated fighter jet, but the SAM does not appear to have destroyed the aircraft.

The Houthis have continued their attempts to capture Taiz City by securing positions on advantageous terrain and roadways on the city’s western outskirts.

The Iraqi Parliament voted on October 15 to approve some Iranian-backed Iraqi militia actors to fill three vacant ministerial roles and a deputy prime minister position during its session to complete Iraq’s government formation.

Iran Iran Update, October 14, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org
5 Upvotes

Key Takeaways

Recent waves of Iranian attacks on vessels in and near the Strait of Hormuz indicate that Iran retains the ability to effectively target vessels in the strait, which suggests that Iran has either overcome previous operational challenges or is adapting to such constraints through new tactics or capabilities.

The Houthis are attempting to domestically produce a variant of the Iranian Kheybar Shekan missile with People’s Republic of China (PRC)-manufactured components.

Houthi development and use of Kheybar Shekan variants with maneuverable re-entry vehicles that can change the missile’s trajectory mid-flight present a challenge to Saudi air defenses as the Houthis continue to fire missiles and drones targeting Saudi critical infrastructure.

Ukraine/Russia War Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, October 14, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org
3 Upvotes

Key Takeaways

Ukrainian officials reported in-motion speed restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield communications network over Ukraine overnight on October 13 to 14 that will significantly disrupt Ukraine’s jet-powered drone interception efforts and intermediate-range strike campaign.

Ukrainian forces do not have access to Starshield or Starlink services over Russia, such that the latest Starshield in-motion speed restrictions cannot affect Ukraine’s ability to conduct long-range strikes against targets in Russia.

The speed restrictions on Starshield could have major implications for Ukraine’s interception efforts against Russia’s faster jet-powered drones.

The Starshield restrictions will significantly impact Ukraine’s ability to conduct the intermediate-range strikes that have facilitated Ukraine’s counteroffensive operations in key frontline sectors throughout 2026.

The Starshield speed restrictions come as Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps publicized more details on Operation Vivaldi in the Lyman direction, which has heavily relied on a coordinated, months-long intermediate-range strike campaign to facilitate successful Ukrainian ground advances.

Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi continues to generate cascading effects on neighboring sectors immediately north and south of the Lyman area.

Ukrainian forces struck a data center of the Russian state-owned bank Sberbank in Saratov Oblast and industrial infrastructure in Rostov Oblast on the night of October 13 to 14. Russian forces launched 39 Iskander-M, KN-23, and S-400 ballistic missiles, Zircon and Onyx anti-ship missiles, and 128 drones and loitering munitions against Ukraine overnight.

Neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces advanced on October 14.

“They don’t hold our territory; they’re unable to strike our locations, and that’s what victory looks like for us,” he said.

NATO is a defensive alliance, Grynkewich said.

“So we don’t have any desire here to escalate the situation, and we don’t have any need to do it,” he said.

“All we need to do is make sure no one can threaten us, no one’s going to threaten our territory or our people, and that’s our main objective.”

North Korea Korean Peninsula Update, October 14, 2026

Thumbnail understandingwar.org
3 Upvotes

Key Takeaways

North Korean Military Enhancement: North Korea conducted two ballistic missile launch tests on October 12 and may have tested its short-range ballistic missile’s ability to follow quasi-ballistic trajectories, which complicate missile detection and interception. North Korea could use these missiles to strike critical chokepoints and isolate the frontline during an inter-Korean conflict.

South Korean Domestic Politics: The Lee Jae Myung administration’s response to the September 21 explosion of a North Korean landmine in the Demilitarized Zone and the subsequent injury of South Korean soldiers is being widely criticized in South Korea and may contribute to a further decline in Lee’s approval ratings. The Lee administration has thus far not finalized any countermeasures against North Korea for the incident, likely due to internal divisions within the administration.

Join us for an event featuring a panel discussion refocusing attention on North Korean human rights by examining conditions at the Alabuga drone-production facilities in Russia. It will also mark the launch of a new joint CSIS–Bush Institute report analyzing the North Korean regime’s state-sponsored trafficking and how these drones are enabling and intensifying the unprovoked war in Ukraine. The report illustrates how China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea—collectively referred to as CRINK—are increasingly supporting one another and how CRINK cooperation challenges America’s leadership and the rules-based international order.

This event is co-hosted by CSIS and the George W. Bush Institute.
