CBC: N.B. has Canada's highest clean fuel charges

Thumbnail

Summary: New Brunswick’s clean fuel fees skyrocketed past 2030 projections this summer primarily due to a new calculation formula approved by the province's Energy and Utilities Board (EUB), which allows oil companies to fully pass federal compliance costs directly to consumers at the pump. While a 2023 federal report originally predicted that these clean fuel charges would not peak at 8 cents a litre until the year 2030, New Brunswick drivers instead paid between 11.66 cents and 12.34 cents per litre throughout the summer driving season.

Anyone familiar with animal protection laws in NB?

A co-worker has been bringing her dog to work with her - 3 days a week, and keeping it in her Jeep for the entire 8 hours. It happened all summer and last winter, regardless of extreme high and low temperatures. Police and SPCA have been called at least a dozen times and we have watched her outside telling them off/getting in their face from inside the office, but don't know what was said. Is this not illegal? We keep calling SPCA/Police but nothing is done.

NBCC LPN PROGRAM

I just got accepted into the LPN 2027 Fall intake at NBCC. I don’t know anyone who has done this program and I’d love to hear about it. Is it draining? What does the day to day look like? I want to know as much as possible before paying my deposit. Is it worth it? Thank you!!!!

New grad LPN in NB. What should I expect from the Horizon interview, and how do I prepare?

Hey everyone (I am sorry for the long read)

I’m graduating from my Practical Nursing program soon, and I’m hoping to hear from current LPNs and recent graduates who have gone through the Horizon Health Network hiring process.
This will be my very first nursing job interview, and honestly, I’m nervous as hell. 😭 I’m doing well academically and graduating with honours, so I know I’ve put in the work throughout nursing school. However, I also know that doing well in school and performing well in an interview are two different things, and I really want to give myself the best chance possible.
From what I’ve been hearing, hiring seems to be more limited this time around, unlike previous years when it seemed like most graduates were able to find positions relatively easily. That’s making me anxious because, after putting so much time and effort into nursing school, the thought of graduating and struggling to find a job is genuinely scary.
Ideally, I’d love to work in one of the larger hospitals, particularly Moncton Hospital, Saint John Regional Hospital, or a hospital in Fredericton. I’m not from this province and still adjusting to life in New Brunswick, so I’d really prefer to stay in one of the larger cities rather than relocate to a smaller town if possible. I also have a strong interest in starting my nursing career in an acute care hospital.
I want to be clear that I have nothing against nursing homes or long-term care. I know they’re important settings for LPNs, and I’m open to learning wherever I end up. I just have a particular goal in mind for my first nursing job, and I’m worried about how competitive things might be.
For those who have interviewed with Horizon, especially recent new grads:
● What was the interview actually like? Was it a panel interview, and how many people were interviewing you?
● What kinds of questions did they ask? Were they mostly behavioural questions, clinical scenarios, or a combination of both?
● What clinical topics should I review beforehand? Are there particular nursing scenarios, prioritization questions, medication safety questions, or patient situations I should practise?
● How can a new grad stand out when they don’t have much independent nursing experience yet? Did you use examples from clinical placements?
● What questions did you ask the interviewers at the end? I’d love to ask thoughtful questions that show I’m genuinely interested in the position.
● How does the hiring process work for new grads? Do they consider your preferred hospital locations, or are you more likely to be placed wherever positions are available?
● For those hired into acute care, what helped you get your preferred hospital or unit? Did you apply to multiple locations, and how flexible did you have to be?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who interviewed with Horizon recently, whether you were successful or not. If you remember any actual interview questions, examples of clinical scenarios, or resources you used to prepare, I’d be incredibly grateful if you shared them.
I know I can’t control everything about the hiring process, but I want to prepare as well as I possibly can rather than walk into my first interview feeling completely clueless.
Thank you so much! Any honest advice, personal experiences, or interview tips would genuinely help. ❤️

What's it like to work as a Pharmacy Technician in New Brunswick especially Saint John? Any ideas/experiences?

Sorry for making a new thread but the others are outdated. I need to make a huge decision about pursuing a Pharmacy Tech Diploma at NBCC Saint John. I am "from far away" looking for a career change/life change after burnout. I don't want to make another huge mistake and an expensive one at that.

I got an offer to be admitted for the course and I'm really skeptical about it. With all the complaints about unemployment and foreigners taking away jobs, I expected to be wait-listed. I've read that one thread that sounded from a local getting wait-listed. I assumed that the unemployed would go for this supposedly hiring field.

I just can't help but wonder if the situation is so bad that the local population would rather not work in this field. And then I also entertained the idea that NBCC is some kind of diploma mill. But, then again they have certain courses blocked from prospective international students. So I suppose it's not all about the money...

I'm just really anxious because the diploma level for my current soul-sucking profession isn't being offered to foreigners, not just in New Brunswick but also in other Atlantic Canada provinces. I can conclude that the locals prefer that field.

Seriously, how are Pharmacy Tech jobs less desirable than nursing? How bad could it be?

Thank you for people who have something to share.

The one in New York has been running since 1978, and is actually organized and run well.

Shediac Renaissance Faire is no where near that level. If they don't change those prices, there's not going to be a 2028 faire.

Got rear ended and totaled, insurance company wants to settle medical costs. Advice?

I was in an accident a over a year ago, car was written off. I have been in physio for the last 20 months for neck and shoulder injury. At fault insurance company contacted me and wants to settle for around $10,000. The insurance adjustor also asks me if I had different monetary amount in mind for settlement.

So I’m getting this settlement to cover rehab and time off work, but what happens if there’s continued issues down the road? What about things like future missed time from work, loss of enjoyment, etc. If I’m trying to claim anything like that, is that where I need to involve an accident injury lawyer?

Or do I just speak to my insurance agent and ask for a higher amount? WHat is an appropriate amount? I would rather not use a lawyer unless I have to. Should I?

Hi NB! There’s only a few weeks to go until the 2nd Cap City Tattoo Festival, this year at the Fredericton Delta on 7-8 November. We have a huge giveaway on now via instagram and facebook, and we just launched Early Access Pass sales (only 160 available total). Here are a few important updates on what’s happening this year:

  • We heard your feedback, and have lowered ticket prices this year.
  • 60 (!!!) of our 70 artists are ONLY taking walk-ups. That means you don’t need to pre-book, and since lists will start fresh both days you’ll have the same chance to get in with your favourite artist whether you come Saturday or Sunday.
  • Live music! The schedule is online, lineup includes Josh Bravener, Connor Fox, HINCH, STILL M.A.D, Black Suit Devil, and Rich Gloade & Friends
  • Our Saturday afterparty will be on the Delta Terrace, with bonfires, smores, cash bar and casual acoustic sets from Josh Bravener and Black Suit Devil. This is open to anyone with a day or weekend pass.
  • 2 of our pro seminars (Friday 6 Nov) are open to anyone, and have a few spots left: This is a rare chance to learn from the incredible Hans Deslauriers (Design with Intent) or Becky O’Quinn (Composition, Contrast, and Colour Techniques for Artists and Tattooers). DM them on IG to register.
  • Ticket sales for workshops are open now. These are all intro level classes for people interested in the basics (we have stained glass, intro to hip-hop, podcasting, patchwork sewing, and even paranormal investigation!).
  • Flippins will be hosting a pop-up arcade at Cap City throughout the weekend, play for fun or enter a competition
  • And of course, we'll have incredible vendors, a killer Festival menu from Stmr36, lightning giveaways runnings both days, and lots more.

---

We were blown away by the support and feedback last year, and can’t wait to see many of you back again for round 2! Follow us on instagram for live updates and as we continue showcasing this year’s artists, or check out our website for more info.

Big shout out to this year's sponsors: BNG Tattoo Supply, NB Tourism, Delta Fredericton, Bell Media and Flippins

Miramichi Hospital MRIs

Hi! I’m just wondering if anyone has had a MRI done at the Miramichi Hospital recently and how long were you waiting?

I know it’s a waiting game for an appointment but I just want to have a sense of how long people waited for their appts. I’m waiting for one right now so any info would be appreciated! Already looked at the wait times for this through the website! Thank you!!

I took this picture at the wharf in Mispec (outside Saint John) about 2 years ago. I think this old Alpine bottle is a quintessential example of New Brunswick.
