Announcement: Paywalled Election Coverage is Temporarily Suspended

Now through Election Day, November 3, 2026, moderators will only allow election-related content that is accessible without a subscription to be posted to r/maine.

If content is behind a paywall, it may be posted so long as it is accompanied by:

- A working publisher-issued gift link.

- A working archive link providing access to the article.

- Article text included in the post body, subject to Reddit's sitewide rules.

Posts that do not meet these accessibility requirements may be removed until an accessible version is provided.

This rule applies equally to coverage of all candidates, parties, campaigns, and election-related issues.

This suspension only covers election-related coverage. All other paywalled content is fine, subject to existing r/maine rules.

We also ask for your help in reporting posts that do not meet this measure.

The suspension is an effort to reduce the number of reports, complaints, and arguments resulting from users speculating about the contents of paywalled content based on headlines. With growing public attention focused on Maine's elections, we believe everyone should have the same opportunity to participate in resulting conversations.

Thanks to you all continuing to keep r/maine an informed and accessible place for all discussion.

Analysis | Home heating oil is a sleeper campaign issue across cold-weather battlegrounds

"Troy Jackson grew emotional when I asked him about the rising cost of home heating oil because of the war in Iran. He remembered his father digging under their northern Maine trailer to thaw out pipes and his mother “being depressed that we were in the situation that we were in."

"I know what kerosene on your hands at 20 below feels like. It’s not a f---ing nice feeling,” Jackson told me in Biddeford. “People across the state know exactly what this means and how they can’t afford it and what the unfairness is of a man that never had to worry about those things, starting a war that has blown our heating oil up 80% over last year.”

Troy Jackson understands the struggles facing working Mainers because he's lived them.

Discussion Possible attempted scam happened to me in Freeport

Hi, this just happened to me so I’m still unsure of what to think of all this. Please let me know if this is not the right place to post this, but I figured I should post this and see if anyone else had a similar experience.

So, I just got out of work and I was sitting in front of Patagonia waiting for the bus back home. While I was waiting, an African American man with all his fingers missing came up to me and said that him and his wife had a U-Haul reservation down in Brunswick and that he would be willing to pay me sixty dollars and give me a contract that in his words was “totally legit” if I helped them get it.

From the beginning of this explanation, I knew that this was suspicious so I told him no and after repeating that it was legit and he could give me the money now or show me the contract, I told him no again and he walked away and then stopped between two cars further down the same road near the pizza stop. While I was on the bus home, I looked up what this could be and saw that it was a possible scam or identity theft scheme.

So I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience in Freeport?

If LePage is elected do you think he will come to Maine on weekends and when the House is not in session during the winter months? Especially in the 2nd District.

Looking for a female soccer player for 7 v 7 coed

Our 7v7 coed team is looking for a female player to join us for the upcoming season with Casco Bay Sports on Wednesday nights.

We typically play at Fitzpatrick Stadium or Portland Sports Complex depending on the week.

We play in the "B" (Intermediate) division. Most weeks we play against similar mid-level teams, though occasionally cross over against "A" or "C" level opponents.

Our roster is seasoned (aka we're old) so our intense, hyper-competitive days are behind us. We love to play good soccer, but we are strictly a fun, sportsman-oriented team. Our priority is getting a good workout and having fun, not winning at all costs.

We're looking for someone with previous soccer experience who feels comfortable with passing, positioning, and is chill.

If you're interested or have any questions about the team, send me a DM! Thanks :)

Lubec and within 1 hour of town

I am in Lubec for a couple of weeks and I think I have hit all of the well known spots, of course, the lighthouses, Campobello Island, several of the towns on the coast and I plan to take a trip to Grand Manan next weekend, if time and weather allows.

Does anyone have any lesser known, but amazing tips on places to go and see? I feel like every turn I make is just more Maine beauty! I would love to find the perfect place to see the sunrise and sunset. I seem to miss it at night.

I’m looking for easy hikes that someone with little experience could do solo, I love to just roam around the country and would love to find an area with a lot of blueberry barrens.

Thanks for any suggestions anyone has.

News Carnival of Souls - This Wednesday and Saturday at Kinonik! (Portland)

CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)
Directed by HERK HARVEY
WEDNESDAY October 21st 7PM
SATURDAY October 24th 2pm / 7pm
16mm - Black & White - 1h 18m

Doom used to mean something else. In Old English a dōm was a judgment; a verdict, a law, a decree. It survives quietly in words we use every day: kingdom, wisdom, freedom. Only later, with the concept of Judgment Day hanging over it, did the word slide toward ruin. Now it scrolls past us all day, and we have a name for the people who can't look away; doomers, certain that all the frantic activity around us is a rearrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic, business as usual with death reading over our shoulder.

Carnival of Souls lives inside that feeling. A car goes off a bridge in a Kansas drag race; Mary Henry staggers out of the river, takes a job as a church organist in a new town, rents a room, and carries on. Only the organ won't behave, the town becomes increasingly hostile, and a pale man keeps appearing in her periphery. The film moves with the logic of a dream; sound falls away, space folds on itself, a face surfaces in glass and is gone… and nothing is explained.

Herk Harvey spent his career making hundreds of safety films for an industrial studio in Lawrence; cheerful instructions on how not to get hurt. His one feature, shot in three weeks with his coworkers and a ruined pleasure palace on the Great Salt Lake, is about the person no safety film reaches. Its distributor gutted it and went bust, and it survived on late-night television until it had found Romero, and eventually the rest of us.

Dreams are lonely things. However accurately we might describe them, we can’t truly communicate their totality. Mary tries to tell a doctor, a neighbor, anyone, what is happening to her, and watches the words fall short. Plenty of us know some version of that right now: sensing something is wrong while everyone around us stays placidly busy, and then wondering if we're the ones out of step. Harvey doesn't tell you who's right; he leaves you in the room with it, and an organ playing somewhere you can't quite locate.

Question What kind of spider is this?

Sorry about the pad pic 😂 I thought he was dead so I put him in the trash. I named him Fred a while ago. He’s my bathroom spider. But tonight he ended up in the shower with my autistic son and he FREAKED. I thought he was dead and put him in the trash but now we are trying to learn what Fred really is so he doesn’t have to be afraid! My son’s first question was OC is he poisonous? I said no! Because I know that for sure. But that’s about it.

Discussion Talarico Ads on Maine Local?

I don’t have cable, I use digital antenna. My 6-8-13 is local, with predictably Maine local (some NH) political ads.

In the past evening, I’ve caught no fewer than five anti-Talarico ads.

He’s a house candidate in Texas. It’s antenna TV. In Maine. It’s not a national election.

Another misplaced GOP PAC ad buy?

I had heard of recent GOP PAC dollars accidentally spent on Oregon.

Sensible chuckle.

Snow tires?

I recently moved to the Augusta area a couple of months ago. I have lived in places where it snows a little bit but never where I needed snow tires. So, I wanted to know how the process works. Do I call a tire shop to order the tires and then schedule an appointment to have them put on? Is it a good idea to ask for tire recommendations from the shop since I don’t really know anything about it? If so, is there a place that people recommend in the area that would give me good advice and a fair price?

Additionally, when do people normally switch out their tires? And do people just store the set of tires that they aren’t using in their homes? I live in an apartment and don’t have a garage but I could probably find a place that works.

For additional context, I have a Toyota Corolla. I know it’s probably not the best car for snow, but I don’t intend on driving that much in the snow. Just to run day to day errands and to go to work (but I live less than 10min away from work so I don’t think it will be too bad).
