tl;dr in middle, i like to yap, sorry
Hey, there! Weird question, so I was in a random music group and someone posted the question of if you could only bring two records to a deserted island to listen to for the rest of your life, what would they be? And at first I was thinking, like everyone else, I'll just post my two favorite albums, but then I thought, well I've already listened to those records to death and the thing that drives me to continue to listen to music isn't whatever two records I'm calling my favorites at the time, it's constantly finding new ways that people have to express themselves that I would have never thought of doing myself, or that might inspire me to think or create or see the world in a different way, or in a way that strengthens my own world view or i just like the mf yada yada yada etc etc etc so now honestly i'm thinking more in terms of pure volume, and this thought exercise gives me an excuse to dive deeper into something i've been meaning to do more, which is dive deeper into compilations/samplers/mixes/mixtapes etc
tl;dr I'm looking for any of your favorite compilations/mixes/samplers/mixtapes etc, bonus points if they are very comprehensive aka either they're very long and/or you feel sort of are working in the efforts of fully documenting the scene and era they come out of, bonus points if they're tied to a zine or doc put out by a mag or a label, bonus points if they're more than 30 songs, extra extra points if there's a lot of genre diversity
Looking for the perfect records for boredom, records I could never truly get bored of because there's so fucking much to dive into, both involving the music and everything surrounding it, that is the cumulative efforts of many many people.
Feel free to skip this part: If you want even more points and would like to steer your recommendations towards my actual preferences, I like hardcore punk, techno, noise rock, black metal, industrial, rap, dub, power electronics, early screamo and really anything weird.
The two records I would have most likely put as my favorites were Kayo Dot - Choirs Of The Eye and Prurient - Frozen Niagara Falls, with some of the runner up artists being (long list incoming) James Ferraro, Psychic TV, Bad Brains, Gaza, Rectal Hygienics, Muslimgauze, Godflesh, Elysia Crampton, Death In June, MDC, Consumer Electronics, Fitnesss, Brainbombs, Vatican Shadow, Yves Tumor, Charles Bronson, Chino Amobi, The Cure, Current 93, Atari Teenage Riot, Orchid, DJ Speedsick, Harvey Milk, Dreamcrusher and Revenge. Sorry for the long list, was just hoping one of the artists would tip someone off and they'd be like "oh then you'd love this comp for sure"
