Discussion RTX 5070 owners: Would you choose a 1440p or 4K OLED monitor for gaming and productivity?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current 27" 1440p IPS monitor (LG 27GN850-B) to something larger, ideally OLED, with a budget of around £500.

I use my PC for a mix of gaming, video/photo editing (mainly DaVinci Resolve) and general productivity. I could really benefit from some extra screen real estate, particularly for my editing timelines, where I often find myself running out of space for tracks, panels and the preview window.

For gaming, I mostly play competitive FPS titles, where high frame rates and responsiveness are important to me. However, I also enjoy the occasional immersive, story-driven game or something like Elden Ring Nightreign, where I'd love to crank up the graphics and really appreciate the visuals.

I'm running an RTX 5070 12GB, and my main concern with going 4K is how well it'll handle demanding games, both now and over the next few years. I know DLSS can help massively, but I'm wondering how 4K with DLSS Quality or Balanced compares visually to native 1440p. Would I actually get a better-looking experience at 4K with upscaling, or would I be better off sticking with native 1440p, higher graphics settings and better frame rates?

On the other hand, I'm concerned that upgrading to a larger 32" 1440p monitor might actually feel like a downgrade in sharpness. Since I'd be spreading the same number of pixels across a larger screen, the pixel density would be lower than my current 27" display. I'd hate to spend £500 on a new monitor only to find that text, games and editing software look noticeably less crisp.

So I'm essentially torn between:

  • 32" 1440p OLED: Better gaming performance, higher frame rates and more headroom for future games, but lower pixel density than my current monitor.
  • 32" 4K OLED: Much sharper image, more usable workspace for editing and better image quality, but potentially more demanding on my GPU.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's made a similar upgrade, especially those using an RTX 5070 or comparable GPU.

Would you prioritise the extra sharpness and workspace of 4K, relying on DLSS when necessary, or stick with 1440p for the better gaming performance?

The thing is 10+ years old so its probably about time

Fixes itself for a bit if I turn it off and on so maybe its gonna stay for a while longer

I am going to need a new one sooner or later so any recommendations are appreciated (very budget ones, like less than $50)

Text Review MSI MAG 271QP QD-OLED X28 – My experience after testing it, with measurements

I've been testing the MSI MAG 271QP QD-OLED X28 for a few days now. It's a 27-inch, 1440p, 280Hz monitor with a third-generation QD-OLED panel, and I've been pleasantly surprised, especially considering it's part of MSI's MAG lineup.

The first thing I'd highlight is the color performance. I measured around 99.35% DCI-P3 and 98.1% Adobe RGB coverage, using CIE 1976 u'v'. The dedicated color modes are also very well calibrated out of the box.

For example, in sRGB mode, I measured a white point of around 6377K and an average ColorChecker Delta E of just 1.14. The Adobe RGB and Display P3 modes performed even better, both with average Delta E values below 1.

In SDR, I measured around 245 nits, with very little brightness variation depending on the amount of white displayed. It's not the brightest OLED I've tested, but I think it's perfectly usable in a room with controlled lighting.

For HDR, there are three modes. True Black 400 reaches around 454 nits at a 10% window, while Peak 1000 can reach approximately 1010 nits in small highlights, although brightness drops quite significantly to around 460 nits at a 10% window.

The good news is that Peak 1000 tracks the EOTF curve surprisingly well in my measurements, at least with a 10% window. That's not always the case with high-brightness HDR modes. Personally, it's my favorite mode for games with dark scenes and small bright highlights.

For gaming, the 280Hz refresh rate feels excellent. Pixel response times are extremely fast, there's barely any visible ghosting, and I measured around 1.6 ms of display lag at the maximum refresh rate using OSRTT.

It also supports MPRT at 240Hz and 280Hz, although you can't use it together with VRR.

Of course, it's not perfect. There's noticeable VRR flicker when frame rates fluctuate significantly, especially in dark scenes.

Another thing that surprised me was the input lag at 60Hz. I measured around 25 ms of display lag, which seems quite high for an OLED. I still want to repeat that test to confirm the result.

Regarding panel uniformity, my unit has practically no visible gray banding, and text clarity is very good. I haven't noticed the obvious color fringing I've seen on some WOLED monitors.

Calibration was also interesting. I managed to achieve an excellent white balance using RGB values of 96/99/100, but something unusual happened: with all three RGB channels set to 50 in the Custom color temperature mode, the monitor lost a huge amount of brightness.

After adjusting the RGB gains, I was able to recover almost the full SDR brightness while maintaining very good grayscale accuracy.

Overall, I think this is a very well-rounded QD-OLED monitor. Excellent color performance, great factory calibration, 280Hz, and a Peak 1000 HDR mode that can actually reach around 1000 nits in small highlights.

Its main weaknesses are the limited brightness in larger HDR highlights and the unusual input lag behavior at lower refresh rates, which I still want to investigate further.

I've seen it selling for around €439.

Does anyone else own this monitor? I'm particularly interested in whether you've experienced VRR flicker or unusually high input lag at 60Hz.

What's the best monitor under $100( at least around ₱6000) That's my max budget tbh. Preferably with at least 180hz(if there's lower but more reliable brand then I'll go with that), 1080p, IPS, and 24"

Discussion Looking for a Monitor for GTA VI. I‘m on Base PS5

I‘m looking for a 32 inch Monitor for GTA 6. I have the budget to buy a 4K Oled Monitor. But ofc it would be way better to buy a 1440p Oled Monitor since its cheaper than the 4K models.
Since GTA 6 gets upscaled to 4k. Will i get to experience the upscaled 4K on a 1440p Monitor?

Sorry for asking

Discussion Anyone have the AOC U27G4XM? How is the SDR local dimming during desktop use? Is the white text on a black background very dim?

• Upvotes

I bought the TCL C2A Pro and KTC monitor that both had over 2300 dimming zones but they sucked in SDR during desktop use as they dimmed the white text on a black background so much that they were so hard to use or see those text. Does anyone have experience with the AOC monitor with this exact scenario? I don’t want to get OLED as I’ve tried it before and I am sensitive to text fringing so will not get another oled for now. And overall let me know your experience with this monitor and whether you like it or not and the good and bad of it. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Discussion Please help deciding between Dell/msi OLED monitors!

Hi all,

Upgrading from some generic 2K 120hz portable monitor deal to a 4K OLED setup. This will be only for my PS5.

Currently my top two options are:
1. Dell - 4K, 32”, QD-OLED (S3225QC), ~575$
2. msi - 4K, 27”, QD-OLED (pro max 271UPX12G), ~580$

Leaning towards Dell for the bigger screen and immersion factor. However, if quality of visuals or build on the msi is better, I could be tempted that way.

Seems I missed out on the Costco deal for the dell a few months back, sadly. So if there is a better value for a 4K OLED, please point me in the right direction! I have a larger tv so I’m sticking with 27-32 for the desk screen size.

The other Samsung, acer, LG, etc ones are all 650$+ so I narrowed it down to these two options.

Thanks!

Discussion Can i find a good pair of monitors under $200 each?

• Upvotes

Right now I'm running a 2016 Dell ultrasharp up3216q as my main and a random $100 dell monitor from amazon. I want to upgrade, but being in high school, most of my money is going towards my car. Any suggestions on a monitor that I can buy two of? I want to mount them to a dual monitor arm.

Discussion Portable Gaming Monitors

Hey all, hope you’re well.

I work out at sea and I’m planning on bringing a Switch 2 with me, alongside a portable gaming monitor that can also act as a second screen for my MacBook.

I’m looking for a 16-18 inch, 1080p monitor, with some form of HDMI port and 120Hz, that’s fairly tough.

I’m UK based and I’ve had a look for some of the more traditional brands (ASUS, ViewSonic) but all of them seem to be out of stock everywhere.

I’m not familiar with the brands I’m seeing on Amazon (Uperfect and similar) so I hoped you all could help.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion 27" recommendations for gaming and productivity around €600?

Hi, I'm looking for help choosing a new monitor for gaming and coding in Ireland. It needs to be a 27" due to space constraints. I expect to be using it about 50/50 between work and leisure. I mostly play single player games like AAA action and strategy games so competitive features aren't required. My PC can't handle 4k at the moment but I'm planning an upgrade so I don't mind either 1440p or 4k, either would be an upgrade over what I have now. I have an OLED TV that I use in the same room for movies and with my PS5 so I'm worried that anything other than an OLED would be disappointing. However, I'm also concerned about text fringing and burn in for productivity. I'd like to spend less than €600 but the budget can be flexible.

At the moment the best deal I've found is the Alienware AW2725Q which I can get for just under €600 now with a student discount and I'm considering pulling the trigger on that. Does that seem like a good deal? Is it worth waiting to see if there's any black friday deals?

When working I generally am connecting my Macbook air to the monitor so support for a single cable usb-c connection would be a plus but not essential. I'd appreciate any help on choosing a monitor or even just deciding on the panel type. Thanks in advance.

Discussion Green spots and weird colors on external monitor – laptop Dell Latitude 5430

Hey guys, I bought a new monitor, and it works fine with my friend's PC. But when I connect it to my Dell Latitude 5430 (Intel Iris Xe), I get weird colors and green spots in dark areas.

I tested another monitor and got the same issue. The HDMI cable and ports work fine with other devices.

I also updated my drivers using Driver Booster 14, but nothing changed

Where can I get the correct graphics driver for my laptop, and how can I fix this?

Thanks!

Discussion Looking for a monitor recommendation

Hi!

My current monitor (ASUS VP279q) is going out unfortunately, and I'd love to get something similar.

My computer is mostly for casual videogames & general internet usage, no work or school.

I've looked around some and I have been a bit attracted towards the Dell SE2726H, but I wanted to ask on here to see if anyone else had any recommendations as well that I could take a look at.

Preferably 144hz and 27-inch and 1920x1080, thanks.

I feel it's worth mentioning my GPU is a Radeon RX 570 Series, I'm not very well educated on things like this but I'm sure it's considered outdated now, but it works fine for what I do. Might try to get it upgraded soon though

Discussion Is the Asus VG249QM5A for me?

I'm soon going to be buying the ASUS TUF VG249QM5A monitor for myself as I've started university and I feel like I'm going to need a bigger screen later down the road (majoring in Software Engineering), I do game but I wouldn't say I play a specific type, I play all types of games (Roblox, Fallout, Geometry Dash, GTA and so many more).

I wanna know if this is the right monitor for me, as far as my research goes, the only downside I can see is that I have to buy a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and the PPI that the monitor has compared to my current laptop (Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3, 60Hz 1920x1080, i3-n305, 8gb ram)

Discussion [Canada] One of my ASUS VH236s from 2012(!!) finally bit the dust. Looking to buy two new gaming monitors for under $400CAD total. Suggestions appreciated

Title. Yep, I've been using the same monitors since 2012, and somehow both have lasted fine until now. I'd been putting off replacing them for years but now it's finally time.

I run an RTX 3060 and mostly play World of Warcraft, so I don't need anything outrageously fancy like 4k, but I do want to pick something that's worth the cost and will last... probably not almost 15 years, but a decent chunk, hopefully. I'd like to upgrade to 1440p. I do not need or want built-in speakers. Height adjustable would be nice as I don't use monitor arms, but it's not a deal breaker.

What would you recommend? Should I wait for Black Friday or buy now? It's not ideal but I can manage a single monitor for a while.

Discussion Portable UPERFECT 120hz monitors for my laptop (780m iGPU), 1080p or 1440p at 16-18 inches?

I have two minds about this: One is that even at only 16-18 inches -1080p on a native 1080p display will probably still look slightly better than 1080p on a 1440p display of the same size.

On the other hand a 1440p display at 16-18 inches is such a high PPI that any potential dead/stuck pixels would be much harder to notice, also all the 1440p UPERFECT portable monitors have +100 nits higher than the older 1080p ones.

The difference in price is negligible at a ~$20 difference.
