Discussion Topic One of the worst album I listened to this year

Post image
• Upvotes

Ghostemane is a rapper that always was on the line between metal and hip-hop, so it’s not surprising that its latest release, AM:FM, is a alternative/nu-metal album. Even though the genre has been mocked for at least two decades now, one cannot say that it’s dead. Deftones, which seems to be the main inspiration for AM:FM, released a new album about a year ago that was pretty well received. The same can not be said for AM:FM, an album that try to be experimental, but already feel outdated by many many years. If you want to listen to Ghotemane squeaky voice rapping over a Korn-like bassline that sounds like it was sample from an old forgotten demo, then you may like this album. But for me, it went straight in my top 3 worst albums of the year.

Discussion Topic How many covers of the same band your city have?

• Upvotes

I will start: there's 5 Slipknot covers in here and all are extremely bad. So bad its fun to watch them from time to time to check if they got worse. Its a old friends tradition by now.

Also, went to a bar yesterday to check a friend playing Megadeath and saw this Black Sabbath cover doing some great personification while he would totally forget most of the songs (on purpose) like Ozzy did (not on purpose) on almost every damn show.

Discussion Topic What kind of bands do you play in the background whenever you play a game?

Post image
26 Upvotes

For me it depends on the genre. For example: whenever I play a racing game I normally play a lot of hard rock, metalcore, groove, crossover thrash, nu metal bands but whenever it comes to any action game or soulslike it’s usually a lot of tech-death and black metal bands.

Back when I first got into games like Dark Souls 3 and then Bloodborne I wanted to play music that vibed with the environment and that’s how I discovered bands like Tomb Mold, Archspire, Dissection, Watain, Rotting Christ and Kekht Arakh.

Discussion Topic Recs for a deathcore fan?

Sorry if this is asked a lot. I’m a big fan of deathcore/metalcore, like Suicide Silencs, Impending Doom, Chelsea Grin and Crown Magnetar. Is there any recs for more traditional metal that you think I’d maybe like?

Discussion Topic Top 3 Drummers

I did one of these for vocalists a couple weeks ago and it went great so we’re doing another! This time, drummers. Yes yes the heartbeat of every band. If the drumming ain’t right I’m passing. So here’s mine:

  1. Danny Carey

He’s the goddamn octopus for a reason. Incredible complexity, intricate rhythms, impeccable timing and effortless stick play. To me it doesn’t get any better.

  1. Mario Duplantier

Not overly complex and doesn’t make a huge deal about it. For me it is the absolute precision he plays with and the emotion. I really don’t know of another drummer that shows the emotion Mario does. His timing is immaculate both live and in studio.

  1. II

I know I’ll probably get absolutely flamed for this one and I’m WELL AWARE he is not exactly in a metal band. However II is just that good in my mind he has to go on the list. Heavily influenced by gospel drummers, everything he does sounds amazing. Watching him play is breath taking. Undeniable talent.

Discussion Topic Dose anyone listen to korn but not nu-metal ?

Has anyone just not get the whole nu-metal thing, but have an exception? I mostly listen to deathcore like suicide silence or impending doom, sometimes traditional death metal like morbid angel or dying fetus, not because it’s niche or whatever,I still like mainstream shit like Metallica ,I even consider non metal bands like Guns’n’roses one of my favorites(and please forgive me for my pronunciation,English is not my first language) But one thing I always loved about any of these bands is the meaning,I always put a put my limit with death metal because it often talks about things that can actually happen to someone, stuff like black metal or whatever I feel is mostly shock, and that for me is bullshit.I listen to some non metal bands like GNR which for me talks about urban decay and chaos, or nirvana which talk about pure teenage angst, but deathcore for me has some of the realistic lyrics.I discovered Korn in high school and I didn’t know anything about them, let alone know what nu-metal is.But that debut album, man… That album was the most brutally honest depiction of not only teenage suffrage, but child abuse.I became obsessed. Then I listened to issues,I can honestly say that song kept me from suicide more than once. Now, I didn’t find out they were nu-metal until I looked them up on social media, when I looked at other nu-metal bands I was honestly disappointed, anyway I know I said a mouth full… But dose anyone have a deep rooted love for korn, but not nu-metal in general?

1983 saw Savatage's first album, and what a way to start, with many people putting this one among the upper rankings of Savatage albums. While I'm not the hugest fan personally, I see how others are and it is definitely impressive talent wise. Criss Oliva brings the riffs heavy and the solos fast, he truly was a monster on the guitar, and while Jon Oliva isn't quite the Mountain King he'd become, he brings some really nice melodies and insanity. For me, the songwriting itself feels a little lacking, many songs feeling too similar to each other and other traditional metal albums of the time, but everyone else seems to disagree, so take that as you will. I find it really impressive how this album was recorded and mixed in just a day, just shows the insane hurdles Savatage has always had to jump and how they have always done so masterfully. Also, maybe it's just the version I listened to, but I really love how prevalent the bass is in the mix (Keith Collins was their founding bassist and is currently suffering from dementia, if you would like to help, his GoFundMe is live). Overall, an album bursting with talent, and a band that can only go up from here.

Tour/Show Anyone been to a show on the Arch Enemy/Black Dahlia Murder tour yet?

I’ll be going to the NYC show tonight, just wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has seen a show on this tour yet and how the new singer for AE is.

I’m not the biggest BDM fan - I get the appeal, they just aren’t for me so much, so if they play last (I’m hoping), then I’ll stay for a few songs and head out.

Discussion Topic With the nu-metal revival going on, what do you think of nu-metal?

Nu-metal peaked over 20 years ago, and at the time, it was a controversial metal genre. Korn is credited with creating the genre. Nu-metal has influenced other genres, such as metalcore and deathcore. Notable nu-metal bands are Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones, and System of a Down.

Discussion Topic Favorite movie/TV/spoken-word intros in nu-metal songs?

One of my favorite things about this genre is when a song opens with a clip from a movie, a show, or just somebody talking before the riff kicks in. When it's done right it sets the whole mood.

A couple of mine: "Release Da Hounds" by Victim opens with the Simpsons scene where Moe teaches a hip-hop self-defense class, which is hilarious right before it gets heavy. And "Wake Up Call" by Seeded Crown opens with a guy explaining something to a crowd that pulls you right into the track.

What are yours? Drop the song and what the clip is from if you know it.
