Discussion Topic It's Friday. What new releases are you listening to today?

Post image

This is definitely one of my most anticipated Fridays of the year, which makes the fact that I'm too busy to get much listening in pretty unfortunate. That said, I pre-ordered the new Insomnium on vinyl, so I've had it since Tuesday. While it's not as good as their best stuff, I'm comfortable saying they've added another great album to a career of great albums. I'm gonna try to get to new ones from Mother of Graves, Iapetus, Veilburner, Shores of Null and Morgue, as well.

What new shit are you listening to today?

Strömstad, Sweden 🇸🇪

Genre: Black Metal, Death Metal

So The Somberlain and Storm of the Light’s Bane are Black Metal classics. I remember feeling a bit more for the debut, so that’d be my pick as a favorite. Though with those two albums - no choice is wrong. Reinkaos is okay and I mean that as a mostly positive opinion. It suffers from a break in writing, lineup change, production - but the songs themselves are actually still really decent. Definitely a band you have to separate the art from the artist because Jon at the very least was batshit, but man could he play.

“Where Dead Angels Lie”

News/Announcment Sharon Osbourne re-released the T-shirts mocking Pink Floyd after Roger Waters' attacks on James Hetfiled

After Ozzy's death, Roger Waters made some insensitive comments: “Ozzy Osbourne, who just died, bless him in his whatever state that he was in his whole life. We’ll never know. The music, I have no idea. I couldn’t give a fuck.” (...) “I don’t care about Black Sabbath, I never did. Have no interest in biting the heads of chickens or whatever they do. I couldn’t care less, you know.”

Recently, after James Hetfiled's controversy, Roger Waters said about him: “Can we stop talking about this prick? I’m so bored with him. He’s just showing that he’s a complete prick. He's got an IQ of about three, and why we're talking about him, I honestly don't know because he's a nobody and he'll always be. He may have a few hundred million dollars or whatever, but he's a prick.” (...) “ He is no musician. I heard them playing acoustic instruments and they couldn't. It was appalling.”

Discussion Topic What do we think about the new Saint Vitus bar in Bushwick Brooklyn?

The new location is incredibly nice and bigger, it’s easier to move around, and the space is generally more “breathable,” if that makes sense (it’s not a death trap anymore).

Personally, I still miss the grittiness and understated simplicity of the old location. Admittedly, I’m more of a dive bar person, so kinda biased. The bathrooms are too fancy, imho, and I foresee the automatic fixtures to break frequently and need regular maintenance. Minor, but I fucking hate the ceiling lights in the main room. They’re giving Moroccan hookah bar vibes for no good reason.

Sound-wise, I honestly can’t distinguish, as I am deaf as shit. Great shows so far, the booking department is killing it. I’ll be there at least once every week until Thanksgiving when I’m leaving town. Anyways, your thoughts?

I experience the "Mandela effect" with Chimaira's song "Power Trip." I thought it was a single that wasn't included on any album, but it turns out it's from the album Impossibility of Reason.

This band is so incredible, nearly every album is banger after banger. The insanity of Hall of the Mountain King, the tragic brilliance of Handful of Rain, and the expert songwriting on Poets and Madmen. Jon and Criss Oliva are and were some of the best musician of the 80s and 90s, and Paul O'Niell was one of my personal favorite producers.

Discussion Topic Aside from all the history and current fanbase, what are your thoughts on Mayhem's actual music? And thoose that got into the music before the internet, or you had acess to it, what was your reaction to finding out the "cringey" side to the fanbase?

Post image

Here's my little bit on my history of the band, but feel free to skip it, i didnt really i'd written this much!😅🤣

I first heard deathcrush and De Mysteriis Dom Satanas with no previous knowledge of the bands history, fan base etc. I was really into NWOBHM at the time and starting to get heavily into thrash and it was in the section of a cool little record store in town that i usually liked the albums in. I also really liked Morbid, and i had heard the siner of Morbid was also the singer of mayhem. I really loved them and listened to them quite alot ( as i do still). Eventually through hanging out in metal venues and places and through magazines, i heard about the whole history and so on. I got really into it as i thought it was quite cool and read up and watched a few documentaries on it ( i had no acess to the internet at the time). I found the figure of Pelle quite cool and i am also a bit of a history and architecture nerd so the actual sociological history of the church burnings in the anti-christianity side i found facinating.

When i found out there was a film about it i was quite excited, and also being a horror geek, i thought it could be a fantastic movie. When i finally got a dvd of lords of chaos i was quite exited to watch it.

Safe to say i was HEAVILY disappointed. I thought the fim production was well... lets just say crap. And the "characters" of the people involved and actions just seemed like stupid kids.

When i spent a bit of time online i began wondering why Mayhem were so looked down upon and ridiculed by metalheads who liked the same bands on me and shared the same veiws on bands that "aren't metal" (yes, i know how ridiculous i sound XD). When i found out about the "Tik Tok black metal" side and the whole mentally unwell pelle fan girls i was MORTIFIED. It was the total oppposite of what i expected fans to be like as a kid. As a 13 and bit year old kid living in the country side, their story had actually seemed somewhat crazy and dangerous to me. And their music amazing and interesting.

Thier fanbase somewhat ruined the band for a while for me and calling myself a mayhem fan. I got a tad self consoius of being a teenage girl in a mayhem t shirt, or having a large pelle patch on my battle jacket thinking that people might just think i got into them through the internet, or i only like them for their story. Not to mention i had a bad experiance with a guy in a mayhem t shirt being the stereotypical stinky internet troll black metal fan to do with... welll being a young girl going to stinky underground metal gigs and places.

ANYWAY, i was just wondering what your thought on mayhems music is aside from the whole shebang that goes with them and also the new album? And for thoose that became fans without the influence of the internet or other metalheads, what your reaction was to finding out about what the fanbase is like?

Thanks! 😊

Discussion Topic What are your minor, completely irrational pet peeves about metal?

Post image

Suppose my example isn't exclusive to metal, but I really dislike bands using the self titled naming convention for any album that isn't their debut.

Metallica, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Helloween, Annihilator, Killswitch Engage and many more are all guilty of this. Just comes across as lazy to me.

Discussion Topic Bad Omens

*If you don't understand what I wrote very well, it's because English is not my first language; I'm trying to improve it.

I have listened to all the albums that Bad Omens have published, from the debut to the latest album, and what I can say after hearing all the albums is that they tried to copy the change that Bring Me the Horizon did, but, in my opinion, they did it too badly. Let me explain my point of view on this post before the fans of Bad Omens come here to insult me; obviously, not all the fans of Bad Omens.

First, start from the beginning: the album debut, "Bad Omens", is by far their best work; as for the music, the mix, the lyrics, everything is perfect on this album. When I started listening to their second album, called "Finding God Before God Finds Me", I liked some songs like "Kingdom Of Cards", for example, but when I continued listening to the album, I started to notice the change from their debut album; obviously, they maintained the metalcore sound of their debut album but started to include some elements like synths, which, from what I heard after having listened to all the albums, I believe that they take influence from Bring Me the Horizon when they pass from the deathcore/metalcore to the a metal more softly mixed with synths and adding electronic things. This was good, but not as good as the first one. But the change that they made in the third album, "THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND", was horrible in my opinion because they literally went from one extreme to another with the change of styles in their music, and it's good to make changes or have more range of styles, but in this album they went too far with the change, because they seem more like an electronic band in the majority of the songs except in "Just Pretend" and "ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE", which are heavier songs than the others. In "CONCRETE JUNGLE [THE OST]", they went in the same way as the previous album, but in this case, this album is way better than the previous one. In conclusion, the first album is their best album for me, but that attempt to copy the style of Bring Me The Horizon didn't work. From my point of view, I think if they had continued with the style of the first two albums, they would have become one of my favourite bands.

I would like to read your opinions. Thanks. As I wrote before, this is my opinion, and if you don't understand something, remember that English is not my first language, and I'm trying to improve it. Thanks.
