How often should I wash my makeup brushes, and what should I use to clean them?

About five years ago, I qualified in makeup artistry, and I was always taught to use one of those little silicone brush-cleaning pads with baby shampoo, followed by spraying the brushes with isopropyl alcohol.
However, when I was doing my beauty therapy diploma, we used a solid brush-cleaning soap instead, and I found that it seemed to clean the brushes much more effectively than baby shampoo.
I used to dedicate every Sunday to washing all my makeup brushes, but since going back to college to study barbering, I've barely had any time to keep up with it. As a result, I've started breaking out, and I suspect my dirty brushes might be contributing to it.
I washed all my brushes yesterday, but I'm wondering how often I should be washing them going forward, especially now that I'm struggling to find the time.
What do you all use to clean your brushes? Do you prefer baby shampoo, solid brush-cleaning soap, or something else? And how often do you wash your brushes?
I'd love to hear what works for other makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts!
