Discussion Space Black vs Silver Color Comparisons

Thumbnail gallery
159 Upvotes

Perhaps useful for anyone trying to pick a color, some photos of my silver vs my fiancƩs space black m5 pro chips. Both are beautiful!!! and I was torn on what to pick for a few weeks, hence this post lol, so hopefully this can be a help for someone.

Thoughts: the space blacks finger prints are not nearly as bad as people say. Silver shows fingerprints and dust too, but yeah it blends in more. The space black pulls darker in day to day use than it looked in the store to us. Silver seemed very bright in store, and while it's still bright it's a bit more toned down under normal lighting and usage day to day.

We both loved our older space grays, it's the superior color no question. I went with silver because I'm afraid of scratches so it was the safer choice for me, and it feels more like the traditional Mac's I've been used to all these years. Space black seems durable, but his is only 1.5 weeks old, so hard to tell as far as longevity yet. I do think it'll hold up fine.

finally bought my first personal macbook. went with the macbook pro m5, 24gb ram, 1tb ssd. this thing is a beast!!!
i’ve been using a macbook pro at work for the last 3-4 years, and honestly, i just can’t see myself switching back to anything else at this point.
was initially planning to get the macbook air, but a friend suggested going with the pro since i spend a lot of time coding and building stuff. especially with multiple coding agents running alongside my usual dev setup.

After years of relying on the familiar Windows ecosystem, I finally made the leap and switched to the Mac. Leaving behind the muscle memory of Windows laptops was a massive shift, but upgrading to the sheer power of Macbook completely redefines my daily workflow.

Just after taking my new Mac Pro out of the box (first time Mac user as well) and it’s got this mark, yes it’s small but it’s annoying where it is over the opening that I’ll constantly see it, do you think it’s worth returning?

Help broken macbook pro

• Upvotes

a few years back i accidentally cracked the bottom part of my macbooks screen while closing it, it’s been fine ever since until recently i accidentally dropped an object directly onto the crack which caused vertical lines to appear. since then i’ve noticed it’s been acting strangely and now the screen has randomly gone black and it seems to be on but the screen still displays back. i’m not sure what to do or how to fix it, is there any way i can try and resolve this??

Discussion Nvidia rtx spark benchmarked against the MacBook Pro

https://youtu.be/aV81SqB6HQg?

I don’t want to start any hate towards any manufacturer.

Linus benchmarked the MacBook Pro 14ā€ M5 Pro 15 core version with 24gb ram against the brand new Nvidia RTX Spark laptops with 64/128gb ram.

For some benchmarks like the Llama bench prompt processing, the M5 Pro gets beaten quite easily.

After watching the entire video, the MacBook is on par with a laptop that costs twice to almost 3x as much.

I still don’t understand why they didn’t use the m5 max with 48gb ram, this would be a much better comparison.

If I’m honest I expected much more from Nvidia.

The entire hype turned out to be a straight flop imo. When Apple went from the m4 to the M5, ai performance was increased massively, thanks to the neural accelerators. Apple announced it with a simple post on Twitter.

What are y’all opinions on this, correct me if I’m wrong.

Help MacBook Pro M4 Pro suddenly won't turn on. DFU works, but Revive fails with ā€œGave up waiting for the device to transition from DFU state to recovery state.ā€ Any ideas?

• Upvotes

I have a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip, and it suddenly stopped turning on.

It was working normally the night before. I closed the lid and left it unplugged overnight. The next day, it wouldn't turn on. At one point, the Apple logo appeared briefly on its own, but eventually the screen went completely black and the Mac became unresponsive.

Symptoms:

  • The MacBook won't start normally.
  • The MagSafe indicator initially showed no light and later started blinking.
  • The battery appears to charge while the MacBook is in DFU mode.
  • My M1 Mac mini detects the MacBook in DFU mode.

What I've tried:

  1. Tried charging through MagSafe and USB-C.
  2. Used the leftmost USB-C port on the left side for DFU.
  3. Tried Apple's Finder Revive procedure from my M1 Mac mini.
  4. Updated the Mac mini and tried again.
  5. Tried Apple Configurator with a manually downloaded macOS 27.0.1.2 IPSW.

Finder's Revive either fails immediately or fails after waiting. Apple Configurator progresses to ā€œStep 2 of 2: Installing the system,ā€ but eventually fails with:

ā€œGave up waiting for the device to transition from DFU state to recovery state.ā€

I'm currently running macOS 27.0.1 (Golden Gate) on the MacBook. I don't know for certain whether the OS update caused this, but I'm wondering if it could be related.

I'm trying to understand whether this is a firmware/bootloader issue or a hardware fault. The fact that DFU works and the battery appears to charge makes me wonder whether there's still a way to recover it without replacing the logic board.

I may have important files that aren't backed up, so I do not want to use Restore if it will erase the data. I've booked an appointment at an official Apple Store, but I'd like to explore any reasonable troubleshooting options first.

Questions:

  • Has anyone with an M4 or M4 Pro MacBook experienced this exact DFU-to-recovery transition error?
  • Has anyone fixed it using a different IPSW, Apple Configurator, or another non-erasing method?
  • Does this error commonly indicate a logic-board or power-management fault?
  • Is there anything else worth trying before authorizing a repair?

I'd appreciate reports from people who've experienced this exact issue, especially if they managed to recover the Mac without erasing their data.

P.S. Its out of warranty and am unemployed

Help Size conundrum

Hi all, so I’m looking at picking up a MacBook Pro M5 pro but I’m really struggling to decide on a size. I’m going to be using it for video editing, 4K primarily. I really like the portability of the 14ā€ but I’ve seen a lot of people say it feels too cramped. Is this really going to be a problem and should I spend the extra and get the 16ā€, then lose the portability? Or should I get a 14ā€ and just get an external monitor for when I’m using it at home?

Thanks in advance!

This is a 5 month old laptop and I take care of it a lot, I don’t use the keyboard often (I use a wireless keyboard and trackpad) but when I do, I almost always clean it after every use, so I don’t leave it with fingerprints.

It's Here! 4K 144Hz on M1 Pro MacBook → LG C5 finally working (CalDigit USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter)

Post image
15 Upvotes

been fighting this way too long, posting in case it helps someone

setup - MBP 16" M1 Pro, macOS 27.2 - LG C5 42" - old adapter: Cable Matters 201488 (VMM7100) - new adapter: CalDigit USB-C to HDMI 2.1 8K (model USBC-HDMI21, SKU 500972)

Cable Matters - 4K 120Hz fine - 4K 144Hz black screen on the C5 - but 144Hz fine on my LG UltraGear - Windows PC does 144Hz on the C5 fine, so something about that adapter + LG TV combo - tried custom res in BetterDisplay, adapter reset, TV firmware update, nothing

CalDigit - 4K 144Hz, 10-bit RGB - no flashing, no firmware stuff - HDR works (turned it off, not a fan) - VRR shows 48-144Hz but flickers on my TV, using fixed 144 - TV audio fine

tips - start at 60Hz, then switch to 144 in BetterDisplay - HDR: pick HDR10 connection mode in BetterDisplay, no HDR toggle in System Settings for the TV - free BetterDisplay was enough

credit / sources (MacRumors), others got this working through a CalDigit TS5 Plus dock - original CalDigit find, TS5 Plus + LG C4 at 144Hz: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/dp-usb-c-thunderbolt-to-hdmi-2-1-4k-120hz-rgb4-4-4-10b-hdr-with-apple-silicon-m1-m5-now-possible.2381664/page-81?post=34552486#post-34552486 - TS5 Plus + CalDigit DP to HDMI 2.1 on M1 Pro, LG G2: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/dp-usb-c-thunderbolt-to-hdmi-2-1-4k-120hz-rgb4-4-4-10b-hdr-with-apple-silicon-m1-m5-now-possible.2381664/page-83?post=34695954#post-34695954 - full thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/dp-usb-c-thunderbolt-to-hdmi-2-1-4k-120hz-rgb4-4-4-10b-hdr-with-apple-silicon-m1-m5-now-possible.2381664/

Discussion Unsolved! M5 Pro: Mystery user folder showing GB size content with nothing in the folder?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Just got a new M5 Pro after 5.5 yrs working with the first model M1.

Did migration assistant which had to be done a second time since my desktop didn't migrate over. Once the second migration happened I had another user folder "acandela_1" which had folders with zero bytes to the folders. I checked all the folders and no content, so I deleted them.

This is where it gets *interesting*. The acandela_1 folder itself shows that there is 39GB in this folder and it has 1 item. You can see this in the "Get Info" details. But the folder is empty of any content. I contacted Apple senior support and we troubled shooted every possibility to delete this folder. I've worked with Apple products for about two decades and this particular issue has me stumped!

After mulling over a few other tech scenarios, I began to think that this folder with "invisible content" could be connected to either iCloud and/or iCloud drive.

My dilemma is that if I turn off iCloud and/or iCloud Drive, I could lose some data and not certain if this would be associated with the acandela_1 folder. I'm aware I could download a copy but I think this would add more work than I need to isolate this issue with the second user folder.

We checked permissions and still not able to delete the folder. I can say I'm not a fan of the addition of the iCloud drive. It's easier (for me) to just have one source destination and leave everything there. Desktop, documents, etc.

If anyone has experienced this or something similar, or if not, what could be the solution to this? Again, I'm now leaning to it being Cloud related. Also created a TEST user to see if the folder would show up and it does with the same information.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! ;) ~MM~

Discussion Using Macbook Pro on the couch or lap without a lap desk?

I enjoy using my MBP 14" so much more when I don't have a lap desk underneath it all the time. It's so much comfier to use in every way without it. However, because of the fan vents, I'm always paranoid that the fans will turn on without me knowing (because they're so quiet) while the laptop is set directly on my lap or the couch, so I feel obligated to use the lap desk all the time just in case, despite it making my experience with the computer significantly less fun and less comfortable.

How worried should I really be about this? What's the worst that can actually happen if the fans quietly turn on while the vents are sorta covered up - should I feel obligated to use the lap desk all the time as a precaution, or can I allow myself to go without it?

This has been bugging me so much it's honestly been making me consider selling my Pro for an Air, despite the money I'd be losing in doing so, just because it has no fan vents. And I'm wondering if I really need to be worrying about this to begin with, if that's something I need to even be considering. If this is a stupid concern, please, tell me.

(Obviously if I'm rendering video or something I'd know to put it on the lap desk.)
