Humor Just can’t believe it is the same actor

Post image

When I watched the new “Resident Evil” in its release day, I was finding the main actor quite familiar, but couldn’t recall where I did see him before. Then, after the lights turned on, I did check on Wikipedia who was that guy and I learnt he was the same drug addicted guy from “Weapons”. Damn, I couldn’t believe it! I mean, he got so different on “Resident Evil” that you think it’s two completely different persons, as you can see in the picture above.

But anyway, he acted so wonderfully well in “Resident Evil” that he deserves some sort of recognition/awards for such role. Congratulations, Austin Abrams! I hope you have a bright career from now on! Best wishes!

I get the hate, its not exactly subtle nor profound but its just a fun, unique horror movie with extremely unsettling visuals and two great lead performances

Discussion The Night of the Hunter

Post image

While I know I'm late to the party, I just watched The Night of the Hunter for the first time and it blew me away. The cinematography has to be one of the best rice ever seen. There are so many shots that made me think "wow, that's incredible." The use of light really makes many scenes pop - whether it's from beauty or how scary it looks. I can see myself revisiting this in the not so distant future.

Does anyone have any recommendations for similar films?

Discussion One of the most underrated Cronenberg films ever. The Brood(1979)

Cronenbergs most personal work. A movie with such a great premise and eerie tone that delivers its ideas greatly with enough cronenberg edge mixed in at the end.

Try if you love cronenberg or body horror.

Discussion Onslaught is a movie that I can honestly say "Wow I can't believe I actually purchased a ticket to go see this, I could've waited for streaming"

I thought the trailer looked cool. I like Adria Arjona and I liked Adam Wingard's The Guest but he's been a huge miss for me. I didn't really care for You're Next. I thought the ending was predictable. I skipped Blair Witch obviously. But for this movie I didn't know what to expect. I guess that's my fault. When I left the theater I felt nothing. That was one of the movies that came and went for me. Definitely a streaming movie.

Discussion Anyone plus 40 years age people here?

I have a question, does anybody who are +40 here changed they film viewing habits? Example like when you were younger you watched much more films, but later you became much more picky for example?

I do know people who started to watch more films when they were +45, but they are more outliers than a rule, but it is cool that some people start later. I know people who still watch films from childhood to middle age.

But i noticed that people who are over 40s, tend to watch less and less films. Maybe bc some became more critical over the years and only look for highest quality. Well you watched many films over the many years, you kinda start to pick what is too formulatic or just too familiar to enjoy anymore.

Anyone can share they experience and your friends experience?

Letterboxd Robert Altman's GOSFORD PARK was promoted as a murder mystery film but the murder is pretty secondary to what we get

for the record, I liked Gosford Park but it was interesting how the murder mystery becomes so secondary, to the point where we get the "reveal", I almost forgot.

The cast is amazing and the film is definitely a showcase for almost everyone to shine. Faves for me were Emily Watson, Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Richard E. Grant, Clive Owen, Kristin Scott Thomas and Geraldine Sommerville.

I do wish we got more scenes of Stephen Fry as the detective.

Saw this tonight at a festival and really enjoyed it. It was simultaneously heartwarming and hilarious. I feel like Jordan really understands contemporary culture and comedy. Well, I guess that's obvious....he is a gay man from NY so he WOULD know his culture.

Also, I loved his Azerbaijani room mate. He stole every scene.

Discussion The Diorama and Digger

Post image
25 Upvotes

An interesting footnote from Leonard Wolf's Dracula that I stumbled upon last night

"today we think of dioramas as miniature three dimensional scenes in peep hole boxes. Originally they were large spectacle theaters without actors...It featured huge paintings (65 feet long and 42 feet high) illuminated for a variety of effects: sunrises, seascapes, cloud formations, cities, and gardens... They are considered important forerunners to motion pictures. This historical background is pertinent because seascapes and shipwrecks... were a staple of dioramas and panoramas."

and ive been trying to think if the history of dioramas, has anything to do with digger! i mean... MASSIVE, in theater shipwrecks and sunrises and oceans, the imagery at the very least seems to match.

Is Inarritu saying that film's going backwards? do y'all think he could be referencing a specific historical diorama that I do not know about? These were invented by Louis Daguerre, the same guy who made the Dagguerrotype- I feel like a lunatic saying this- is digger a pun on daguerre?

Is this a reach? What do y'all think?
