Upgrade to 26.10 from 25.10
25.10 was released a week ago and I'm still getting upgrade to 26.04 LTS. I thought in the past it was possible to go from one interim release to the next without installing an LTS

Using kubuntu ( previous to 2026 it's release).
When i use Microsoft teams, to join a call via Chrome, my audio defaults are usually mixed up. For example the output is set to my shure mic, input is via webcam or some other crazy combination. Today I joined the call, my mic worked but couldn't hear anything.....by chance I looked at the audio tab to see the volume specific to Chrome was muted!
This happens much less frequently with Google meet ( the best ) or zoom.
Is this a me thing, a teams thing or a Linux thing?
Yes I know upgrade to latest lts.... just need to finish projects before system move.

From what I understand, since AMD drivers are open source they get baked into the linux kernel, but what is the timeframe between AMD releasing driver updates and those updates getting pushed into the LTS builds? Is it worth updating the drivers straight from AMD?

I recently upgraded from 24.06 LTS I think, to 26.04LTS.
I've noticed since the change was made that I now have this weird darkblue/purple pixel smear occur on my screens, I don't know how to describe it, its not a smear or artifact of thaws on screen, Its like a pixelated mass, its spread out but theirs no smoothing its all squares.
This only started after the upgrade and happens on any of my 3 screens. It happens randomly, their doesn't seem to be an issue with performance of what I'm doing at the time, it has happened while watching videos, gaming, using krita, looking through files, and just browsing the internet with firefox. It doesn't happen often, but when I notice it its a little concerning.
Is this a known bug that's being worked on? do I need to change some of my PC settings to resolve this?

I have my 26.10 install on a EXT4 partition in my secondary 4TB SSD game drive, with the main OS 2TB SSD housing my old windows install I kept just in case.
Well, I just got a 512GB SSD, moved windows to that and emptied my main 2TB SSD so I can use it for Kubuntu and leave the 4TB one as my game and file drive. Moving windows to that SSD was easy because of Disk Genius but I have no idea what tool would be best for Linux.
Ideally, I just clone the partition onto the 2TB drive and then expand it to fill the empty space but most sources I've seen say I'll also have to change some UUID or the fstab
Since the process seems to be more involved than I expected, does anyone have a good guide or video tutorial on how to do this step by step? I'm still fairly new to Linux so I need all the help I can get.

Hey guy, I'm new to Linux and recently installed Kubuntu alongside Windows (🤮), and for the most part I do like Linux. But I have had some problems regarding my internet. So my laptop is a Vivobook Go E1504GAB_E1504GA (1.0) paired alongside my Wi-Fi card, the MEDIATEK Corp. MT7902 802.11ax PCIe Wireless Network Adapter. So when I installed Linux, the internet did not work at all, so I had to boot into Windows and download some random, ah, GUTHUB drivers, things to make it work, which I think was something called a MediaTek-Mt7092-Linux-Driver-Installer-main, and this would allow me to have the internet. So I took that, put it onto a USB flash drive, and boom, I had internet. But the internet was slow, so I disabled some power-saving settings and some other changes that I cannot remember, and it seemed like it was good for about a day. The next time, however, I opened my laptop, and everything was working fine. I even installed a script or igues. I took one and put it onto my device via Konsole to tell my device that every time I open the laptop, it will connect to my wifi. All was good until the end of the day, when it would turn on and off again and again, and the wifi would be really slow and very annoying to work with. I really do like Linux, and I would have to switch back to Microsoft because my goddamn internet won't work. If you guys have any fixes to this to make the internet more stable, fast, and not disconnect, or anything positive, let me know. PS: I don't mind using the console/terminal, so if anything comes to be, lmk what to do, and I'll do it. Thanks in advance. 🐧

Hi all,
As this came up in another chat, just wanted to break it out as there does appear to be a reported issue with AMD RDNA4 GPUS and kwin which manifests within things like the SDDM greeter amongst other things.
In both instances, forcing a software mouse cursor instead of using the hardware (GPU enabled) cursor at least allows for normal inputs. There's a few linked bug items in the report here including if you've gotten far enough to see error messages when trying to troubleshoot yourself.
TLDR; for the issue, there's a bit of faff going on with the new versions of tools coming with 26.10 which if you're forcing the update through rather than being prompted to upgrade, you'll possibly see on a AMD system but then hopefully not once some of the fixes are pushed out.
So you create a file:
sudo nano /etc/sddm.conf.d/zz-greeter-gpu.conf
and type in the following:
[Wayland]
CompositorCommand=env KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1 kwin_wayland --drm --no-lockscreen --no-global-shortcuts --locale1
Write it and reboot your system. This should force the software mouse cursor at the login screen and allow you to have normal inputs to login to the session normally.
If you ever want to get rid of that, as it's a system wide use, you use:
sudo rm /etc/sddm.conf.d/zz-greeter-gpu.conf
So this can mess things up like mouse performance in games and such but if you're experiencing the input lag once logged in also, you can run a similar set of commands to just enable the software cursor from the console:
mkdir -p ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env
echo 'export KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1' > ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/swcursor.sh
Then reboot. As we're just making the above for the current logged in user, it's a little easier to work with, but if you wish to remove this from a single command (whenever the bug fix lands) then use:
rm ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/swcursor.sh
Hope that helps folks 😄

Hey kubuntu folks,
Is there a way to automatically change the screen frequency of a laptop? 60 HRZ on battery and 120 on power?
Thanks ahead

I would like to start by saying that I never really thought I would use Linux in my life. However, what pushed me to dual boot Kubuntu and make it my main desktop operating system was that I was sick and tired of Windows. Most of my games would crash out of nowhere, and I was fed up with it.
So, I considered dual booting Linux on my system. Originally, I wanted to go with Linux Mint, but I didn't like the desktop environment. I wanted something similar to Windows, and that's when I discovered KDE Plasma. I decided to try stock Ubuntu to see if I could install KDE on it, and it worked. However, I later found out that having two desktop environments installed on the same system wasn't ideal.
After doing some research, I discovered Kubuntu.
When I first installed it, I was really happy because everything worked. Gaming on this distro surprised me beyond my expectations. Minecraft ran incredibly smoothly, and practically every game I usually play (GTA, RDR2, CK3, Minecraft, etc.) ran without any issues. Some games even performed better than they did on my Windows PC.

Gracias.

So I installed Kubuntu on a new machine I just built and I've been having issues with the Wi-Fi, performance, and odd stuff like it not being able to install updates or taskbar icons turning invisible. I kinda want to try and repair the installation to see if these problems go away but if they don't I don't want to have to reinstall everything.

Booted off a Kubuntu 26.04.1 usb. All went okay for the 'try it' option, however a minor dual monitor problem.
When the initial desktop page was displaying on the laptop monitor, the external monitor had no mouse showing, and therefore had to use the laptop screen to go into system settings and adjust the display settings.
The laptop is Lenovo, the external monitor is Lenovo. I do have Ubuntu 26.04.1 installed at present on the same drive/SSD, and at login, no external monitor can be seen at all.

I use Fedora KDE. I installed the Nvidia driver and various other components such as codecs by following excellent guides I found on GitHub, specifically the "Fedora Post Install Guide" and "Fedora Noble Setup." I also enabled Secure Boot, and everything has been running smoothly for months.
However, I sometimes run into situations where only .deb packages are provided instead of .rpm files, which is a bit of a concern. There are certain packages I simply cannot find for Fedora. While alternatives usually exist, I sometimes can't locate the specific software I actually want to use.
Additionally, my laptop fails to wake up from sleep mode; I’m forced to cut the power completely.
What led you to switch from Fedora to a Kubuntu interim (non-LTS) release? Are you highly satisfied with Kubuntu? And if you prefer not to use Snap or `snapd`, how do you manage to avoid them?

Only a few weeks ago, I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 26.04.1 ; it was quite an experience, not stable at all for me. See https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1ws5ejs/fresh_install_of_ubuntu_26041_any_alternate/
So I did a fresh install of Ubuntu/Gnome 26.04.1, which, although it is very boring compared to Kubuntu, is very stable. No problems at all.
If I wanted to test Kubuntu 26.04.1, in consideration of this laptop of vintage 2019, 8 Gn ram, a 4-quad CPU, and a lot of disk space to spare, what will be the easiest to do ?
Install in a VM or make a partition that I can boot into from grub ?

I have recently updated from the last LTS to 26.04 LTS and now I can't see the exif information in image files in Dolphin or Gwenview anymore.
Baloo is installed but disabled (I never use system search and I never liked how it stressed my SSD in the past).
How can I get the display of the exif information back? Using the terminal to look it quickly up is a bit tedious.

So I've been thinking about picking up one of those auxiliary screens that plug into your USB c connector to like monitor stuff.
I asked on r/Linux questions if anybody has used any of those auxiliary screens. You know a little 9 in 12 in ones that you can put in your computer or under your screen etc.
Has anybody done it in Ubuntu or Kuuntu?
I saw there is a package that you can install, and I know I'm going to get my ass kicked doing it! I've been getting my ass kicked since 1997 using Linux!
My ask is has anybody else done this and is there a quasi simpler way to do this.

yesterday on ubuntu 26.04.1 lts fresh install with secureboot on automatically installed the nvidia 595 open drivers during the setup, it was a hassle-free experience, is it the same for kubuntu 26.04?
