Love to use Ubuntu since years but I’m really not an expert! My MacBookPro Mid 2012 tells me to reboot, but it won’t help! Any Ideas to get it back to run again or at least so save some files. Thanks!

Last time I clicked "install" on one of these (or an equivalent with UEFI), my filesystem disappeared and I was forced to reinstall Ubuntu. Can I prevent these from popping up? Because I fear that I may accidentally click "install" again on it one day...

Sometimes my network connection disappears, even though Ubuntu doesn't seem to notice - a reboot always solves the problem. Can it be prevented? Because it's pretty annoying.

How can I use my Android tablet as an extended (not mirrored) display for Ubuntu Linux?

10 Upvotes

Hey everyone

I’m using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop, and I want to use my Android tablet as a secondary monitor with an extended display, similar to how you would connect a second monitor to a Windows PC.

I specifically want to extend my desktop, not mirror my laptop’s screen. For example, I want to keep my coding workspace open on my laptop while watching YouTube, reading documentation, or viewing other windows on my tablet.

Has anyone successfully set this up? Which software or method would you recommend?

FREE SOFTWARE IF AVAILABLE ANY

Thanks!

I've been trying for over a week to get support for my google drive after a fresh install of Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS. I've tried rclone, google-drive-ocamlfuse, and overDrive. Every single one when trying to authorise give me the following error:

Access blocked: rclone has not completed the Google verification process

rclone has not completed the Google verification process. The app is currently being tested, and can only be accessed by developer-approved testers. If you think you should have access, contact thedeveloper.

If you are a developer of rclone, seeerror details.

Can someone PLEASE help me out? This is driving me nuts!

26.04.1 no splash screen on start ((Text appears)

2 Upvotes

Hello

I'm using a 2015 Lenovo 100 15IBY Notebook. While using Ubuntu 24.04, it sometimes wouldn't shut down (I didn't have this problem with 22.04, but the USB Bluetooth dongle didn't work with 22.04, so I installed 24.04 and then 26.04). When it wouldn't shut down, I would turn it off by pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Now I've installed 26.04.1. The same problem persists. Actually, it's not a problem; forcing a shutdown doesn't cause any system errors.

But now there's a new problem, and I think it's related to the shutdown issue. Two weeks ago, I did an update, and since then, text appears every time it shuts down and starts up. When starting up, the screen showing

GNU/linux
memtest

memtest x64
UEFI

selection appears for 5 seconds.

There's no grub file in the etc/default folder; there's a folder named grub.d.

What can I do to make it start with the splash screen again?

'who' command has no output on 26.04

15 Upvotes

So I just saw that the who command doesn't have an output if I run it blank. Normally it lists all logged in users but now there is just nothing. The man page still says just typing who should list the users. I guess this is due to the new coreutils, because on my CachyOS system (Arch based) it works as intended. Is this supposed to be different or is this a bug? If it's on purpose what's the new parameters to get the old output?

[Fix] ASUS TUF F15 (FX507Z, Bios 330) won't wake from suspend: not NVIDIA's fault, it's a missing ACPI wake entry for the lid

2 Upvotes

TL;DR

My ASUS TUF laptop with an NVIDIA GPU never woke from suspend on Ubuntu. It wasn't freezing. It slept fine, but nothing could wake it, because the BIOS's ACPI table doesn't declare the lid as a wake source (LID0 has no _PRW). Without that, Linux never keeps the embedded controller's wake signal (GPE 0x02) armed during s2idle, and the lid, power button and keyboard all go through that signal. An 18-line SSDT overlay loaded tjrough GRUB fixed it. Lid, power button and keyboard wake all work now!

System

  • Laptop: ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX507ZV4, BIOS FX507ZV4.330
  • CPU / iGPU: Intel 12th gen (Alder Lake-P), Iris Xe (i915)
  • dGPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop, nvidia-open 580.178.04, prime-select on-demand
  • OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (but same issue for nearly a year on Ubuntu 24.04.), kernel 7.0.0-38-generic
  • Storage: 2x NVMe behind Intel VMD (WD SN740 + Predator GM7)
  • Sleep Mode: s2idle (firmware default; deep is also offered)

Symptoms

  • Suspend works. The power LED **breathes**, and the fans and keyboard backlight turn off.
  • Pressing a key, pressing the power button or opening the lid does nothing at all: no LED change, no fans. The only way out is holding the power button.
  • The journal always ends at PM: suspend entry (s2idle). There's never a suspend exit.
  • In two months of logs, a real s2idle suspend never resumed. deep (S3) resumed only on the first suspend after a boot (twice), and the second deep suspend hung both times.

Because there's an NVIDIA GPU, I assumed (like most threads I found) that it was the NVIDIA driver. It wasn't. With the NVIDIA driver completely blocked from loading (module_blacklist=nvidia,...), it still wouldn't wake.

Root cause

I decompiled the DSDT (sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat && iasl -d dsdt.dat). The active lid device _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0 has no _PRW method, and LID0 didn't appear in /proc/acpi/wakeup at all. The embedded controller's wake events (lid, power button, keyboard) arrive on GPE 0x02 (_L02 → ECLV()). Because no device claims that GPE for wake, Linux doesn't keep it enabled during s2idle, so nothing can wake the machine. Windows presumably handles wake differently, so ASUS never noticed.

The touchpad has a similar problem: its GpioInt is declared Exclusive instead of ExclusiveAndWake. I didn't fix that one, since you don't need the touchpad to wake it.

Credit: I found the same issue on the FX507\*ZI4** (same BIOS 330) in this CachyOS forum post, which pointed me in the right direction:* https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/asus-tuf-gaming-f15-fx507zi4-s2idle-wake-sources-fixed-by-dsdt-override/35463

The fix: SSDT overlay (no full DSDT replacement)

Instead of patching and recompiling the whole 3 MB DSDT, I add a tiny extra table that only inserts the missing `_PRW`. If it's wrong, the kernel just ignores it.

Check your path first! In my DSDT there are two LID0 devices. The one under H_EC returns _STA = 0 (disabled). The active one is _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0. Your model may differ.

[1.] Install the tools and dump/decompile the DSDT:

$ sudo apt install acpica-tools
$ mkdir ~/acpi-fix && cd ~/acpi-fix
$ sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat
iasl -d dsdt.dat
$ grep -n "Device (LID0)" -A12 dsdt.dsl   # confirm there's no _PRW, and find the active one

[2.] Create `ssdt-lidwake.asl`:

DefinitionBlock ("", "SSDT", 2, "FIXUP", "LIDWAKE", 0x00000001)
{
    External (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0, DeviceObj)
    Scope (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0)
    {
        Name (_PRW, Package (0x02)
        {
            0x02,
            Zero
        })
    }
}

[3.] Compile it and package it as an early initrd:

$ iasl -tc ssdt-lidwake.asl
$ mkdir -p cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi
$ cp ssdt-lidwake.aml cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi/
$ (cd cpio && find kernel | cpio -H newc --create --owner=0:0 > ../acpi_override.cpio)

[4.] Have GRUB load it before the normal initrd. This survives kernel updates:

$ sudo cp acpi_override.cpio /boot/
$ echo 'GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM="acpi_override.cpio"' | sudo tee -a /etc/default/grub
$ sudo update-grub

[5.] Reboot and verify:

$ journalctl -b -k | grep -i "Table Upgrade"
# ACPI: Table Upgrade: install [SSDT- FIXUP- LIDWAKE]
$ grep LID0 /proc/acpi/wakeup
# LID0      S0    *enabled   platform:PNP0C0D:01

After this, the key, power button and lid all wake it, with 3/3 clean resumes so far.

To undo it: remove the GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM line, delete /boot/acpi_override.cpio, and run sudo update-grub. If you ever get a broken boot, press e in GRUB and remove /boot/acpi_override.cpio from the initrd line.

Notes / still open

  • I also have options nvidia NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 set (NVIDIA's recommended setting for s2idle laptops). It didn't fix the wake problem on its own. I left it on, but I don't know whether it's needed.
  • After resume, /sys/power/suspend_stats/last_hw_sleep is still 0, so the CPU isn't reaching its deepest S0ix state yet. That means more battery drain while asleep, which is a separate problem I'm still looking into.
  • If you have this laptop, please report it to ASUS too ("LID0 missing _PRW, GPE 0x02 not armed in s2idle, BIOS 330"). The more reports they get, the more likely a BIOS fix becomes!

I've put a detailed write-up of everything I tried that *didn't* work, and why, here:

[LINK]

Hope this saves someone else a few evenings. If you have another FX507/FX707 model, I'd be curious whether yours has the same DSDT.

[WORKAROUND][GNOME REMOTE DESKTOP] Ubuntu RDP keeps returning to login screen even with the correct password (no reboot needed)

4 Upvotes

Ran into a frustrating issue with Ubuntu's built-in GNOME Remote Desktop:

  • Connect via RDP and see the Ubuntu login screen.
  • Enter the correct password.
  • Immediately get kicked back to the login screen.
  • Your existing desktop session is still running, but you can't access it.

After digging through the logs, I found a simple workaround that restores access without rebooting or losing your open applications.

The fix:

Open a terminal as the affected user (SSH works too) and run:

systemctl --user restart gnome-remote-desktop-handover.service

That's it. Reconnect via RDP.

Why it works: GNOME Remote Desktop can fail when handing an RDP connection over to an existing desktop session. Restarting the handover service restores functionality without killing your desktop.

Tested on: Ubuntu 26.04.1 / GNOME 50.

Important: Avoid restarting GDM or rebooting, as that can terminate your existing desktop session and close your applications.

Hopefully this saves someone else a few hours of troubleshooting!

RDP to Ubuntu 26 Using Windows App Times Out

4 Upvotes

Using Windows App to remote to Ubuntu 26 from Mac OS X Golden Gate. Get auth prompt, then just hangs on connecting and eventually times out. If I use ThinCast RDP client for Mac, RDP works. Anyone run into this or have a solution? I've no luck so far. Using Windows App to RDP to other Windows boxes and AVDs works just fine.

Automatic log in 26.10

12 Upvotes

Just passing by to say that it's the first Ubuntu version since 25 .10 that makes Automatic log in work. I checked the box in 26.04 - it asked for password anyway. So 26.10 is really cool for that. Other than new wallpapers,add- ons tab in App centre I don't really notice anything new, that's a little disappointing, but maybe it's a great thing

solved Help: Can Ubuntu recover files from a lost USB stick that was briefly connected to my PC?

7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on whether there's any chance of recovering files from a USB stick that I've unfortunately lost.

The USB stick belonged to someone close to me and contained important documents that are not backed up anywhere else.

Here's what happened:

  • I plugged the USB stick into my PC running Ubuntu Linux.
  • I opened it in the file manager and could see the files on it.
  • I then safely removed it (or simply unplugged it) and later lost the USB stick.
  • I did not intentionally copy any files to my computer, and I don't remember opening any individual documents.

My question is: Could Ubuntu have automatically cached or stored any of the actual file contents on my computer just because I browsed the USB stick in the file manager?

Thanks in advance for any advice. This is really important to me.
