I don't like the new animation.?
This new animation looks terrible compared to the previous ones; this is supposed to be a distro with a well maintained UX/UI. It's something so basic, and they ruin it.

Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray”, has now arrived. Building
on the foundations of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release continues to
advance security, performance, and hardware support while introducing
new capabilities that look towards the future of Ubuntu. As always, these
improvements are the result of close collaboration between the Ubuntu
team, our community, and our partners. A huge thank you to all who
contributed.Ubuntu 26.10 brings significant progress for security, and strengthens
the platform with the full adoption of Rust-based coreutils,
post-quantum-ready package signing, and expanded TPM-backed full-disk
encryption support. Enterprise authentication gains deeper integration
with Microsoft Entra ID, including password and multi-factor
authentication. Linux kernel 7.3 extends support for the latest hardware,
alongside new RISC-V desktop images and optimized amd64v3 installation
images. On the desktop, GNOME 51 brings improvements to responsiveness,
accessibility, and usability, complemented by more consistent software
management and greater resilience under memory pressure. Ubuntu 26.10 also
introduces Myna, an opt-in, locally processed speech-to-text solution that
marks the first step towards a more natural, context-aware desktop
experience. With updated developer toolchains and expanded support for
accelerated AI workloads, Ubuntu 26.10 continues to evolve Ubuntu as a
secure, capable, and forward-looking open source platform.

The company uses its platform based on the Edge browser environment. However, the browser keeps freezing a lot. In text input fields on any tab or website, it simply freezes and won't let me type. I have to close the tab, write it down in Notepad, then copy and paste it into the text field. Does anyone have a suggestion for a lighter, compatible browser? I use Firefox, but the company's platform gets misaligned/broken.

Watched a few videos but I keep getting the error: unable to locate package when trying to download the wifi drivers.
Any advice?
This is my first time ever installing or trying to use a different operating system so bare with me 😂 I’m not very tech savvy
I'm developing a flatpak of my app and have been pulling my hair out trying to get it to show my icons for the file/mime types the app provides. Everything I've looked at says I've done it right, and I've finally determined I am doing it right... if I switch icon themes.
I've been testing with Ubuntu 24.04. I've never installed any icon packs, this is a VM I use for development testing. So out of the box, the default icon theme seems to be Yaru. If I change the icon theme to hicolor, dmz-white, or dmz-black, my file icon work as expected. I've not found another built-in theme that allows them to work.
Flatpak is installing these icons into ~/.local/share/flatpak/app/${FLATPAK_ID}/current/active/export/share/icons/hicolor/${SIZE}x${SIZE}/mimetypes. This isn't a location I've chosen, I just tell it to install into share/icons/hicolor/${SIZE}x${SIZE}/mimetypes and flatpak does its thing.
My understanding is that hicolor is the fallback theme that I'm supposed to be installing them into. Why would most of the preinstalled themes not do that? Since this works with a few themes, this doesn't seem like a flatpak issue. And I've looked at a bunch of other flatpak manifests, and I can't find any that install icons into something other than hicolor.
What detail am I missing?
Edit: Ok I'm not missing anything. It's an Ubuntu bug fixed sometime in 2025. I setup a new VM with 26.04 and the icons work as expected.

I have been using windows for about 20 years now, it has never been this bad, I have a HP gaming laptop with 4600H, 16GB RAM, and 1650ti, yes my laptop is not bleeding edge but its not also a complete potato, I should be able to run basic browsing and basic games atleast.
I was struggling to open the "Search box" on desktop....
File Manager took 1-2 minutes to open and search for a file
I was super frustrated and eventually decided to look for linux alternatives.
About 2 months back I switched to linux mint, the improvement as compared to windows was massive, browsers open without lag, file searching is instant, I only had 140gb free on my 256 GB SSD in windows, in linux mint i got about 180 GB. I also started playing older highly rated titles on steam (I finally stopped playing valorant and decided to explore other games), Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Witcher 2, Factorio ..... in my 5 years with this laptop, i had never played so many games before, the main reason i could play all this is because on windows my RAM was always occupied to the max, and i could barely switch windows with other applications, here on linux i do that basically everyday..
Why i left Linux Mint and came to Ubuntu
I will just give a list of cons of linux mint which no one talks about,
Eventually I installed Gnome desktop on Linux mint and i loved the way gnome looks and eventually some people recommend me if I like gnome so much I should just switch to ubuntu.
This brings me to ubuntu, I was kind of amazed with the almost "Apple Like" smoothness and reliability, some of the pros of Ubuntu are are follows:
2.UI is very clean and standardized, this reminds me more of a macbook than a linux distro.
I love the fact that you get a HP logo when the PC boots up (i did not get that on mint)my friends were shocked to see that as well, they did not expect this from a Linux distro, everyone thought linux was some magical OS without any official support.
My 60 year old dad also was able to learn to navigate the UI within minutes of using my laptop, that's how intuitive it is, he also quickly was able to adjust to the top mounted calendar and volume switches.
Ubuntu is about 10-15 gb lighter than linux mint, consumes similar amount of RAM.
Tab switching on Ubuntu is miles easier than mint, pressing the windows key is just so much more natural than alt+ tab.
I think i found my distro long term. I dont see any major flaws other than the screenshot keys, i need a Windows+Shift+S and Windows+V like setup on my PC and that's about it.

I’m going to dual boot Ubuntu and windows. I was thinking of Ubuntu on my best ssd because I’ll delete windows in a few weeks when I get comfortable with Linux.

Hi! I've been missing something like PowerToys on Ubuntu, so I built toolswitch: one small app (15 MB, ~90 MB RAM) that sits in the tray and gives you 10 tools with keyboard shortcuts:
- Remove background from photos (AI model that runs locally, no upload, no watermark)
- Audio to text: voice notes, WhatsApp audios and videos, recordings (Whisper, offline, ~100 languages)
- Text from screen: select an area and copy the text (OCR, works with accents and tables)
- Clipboard history with images and search (Super+Shift+V)
- Compress JPG/PNG/PDF/Word files, sign PDFs without printing
- Wallpaper changer,
- Reminders ("in 20 min call Juan"),
- Eye breaks/Pomodoro,
- Shutdown timer
Everything runs on your computer, no account. Made in Rust. .deb for Ubuntu 22.04+, also Windows and Mac builds.
It's open source (MIT): https://github.com/berchj/toolswitch It's free.
I'd love feedback: what breaks, what's missing, what you'd actually use.
On one side, I'm used to the standard full disc. But the irritation of having to put in a password twice (decrypt then log in) seems like just an unnecessary irritation. Then of course if you choose to set your user to autologin then you get the irritation of having to put in your password when you open certain applications like Chrome or VSCode.
You of course also have the option of creating a blank keyring to bypass that, but that just seems like a 'hack' that creates risk.
The new option seemed like the solution, but then it automatically decrypts your drive the moment you get to the login screen? Obviously a thief would then need to get past your login password but you still have a decrypted drive.
I just don't understand why the decryption can't be tied to your user password for one, unified login. If someone has managed to find a way to bypass your encryption your data is as good as stolen anyway.

Bonjour, je cherche des conseils pour choisir une carte graphique pour mon ordinateur. Voici ma configuration :
Processeur : Intel Xeon W-2223
RAM : 32 Go
Stockage : SSD de 512 Go
Alimentation : 950 W, 80 PLUS Gold
Câbles GPU : deux câbles PCIe 8 broches
Système : Ubuntu
Budget : environ 800 €

Hi all,
I recently passed the assessment stage for a Software Engineer role at Canonical focused on distributed systems with Python/Go. I’m now moving into the early-stage interviews
So far, I know one of them is a Python deep dive, and I’m guessing another will be a Linux-focused round.
If you’ve gone through this a similar interview loop at Canonical recently, I’d really appreciate any insight on:
Thanks in advance, any experience helps!
