20+ year windows refugee reviews Ubuntu.
I have been using windows for about 20 years now, it has never been this bad, I have a HP gaming laptop with 4600H, 16GB RAM, and 1650ti, yes my laptop is not bleeding edge but its not also a complete potato, I should be able to run basic browsing and basic games atleast.
I was struggling to open the "Search box" on desktop....
File Manager took 1-2 minutes to open and search for a file
I was super frustrated and eventually decided to look for linux alternatives.
About 2 months back I switched to linux mint, the improvement as compared to windows was massive, browsers open without lag, file searching is instant, I only had 140gb free on my 256 GB SSD in windows, in linux mint i got about 180 GB. I also started playing older highly rated titles on steam (I finally stopped playing valorant and decided to explore other games), Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Witcher 2, Factorio ..... in my 5 years with this laptop, i had never played so many games before, the main reason i could play all this is because on windows my RAM was always occupied to the max, and i could barely switch windows with other applications, here on linux i do that basically everyday..
Why i left Linux Mint and came to Ubuntu
I will just give a list of cons of linux mint which no one talks about,
- Its extremely bloated in terms of storage, it almost feels like the adware you get in windows like McAfee and HP apps, you get 50+ apps out of which only 20ish are useful in your everyday life.
- Cinnamon desktop is not a serious workstation desktop environment, it requires a lot of tinkering to get everything up and running. The panel layout editor is a mess, why do i need to adjust font sizes on the left, right and center of the screen, why is the job of a UI designer being outsourced to the user.
- Basic UI features like, having the taskbar display on multiple monitors with indicators on tabs where applications are open, do not work seamlessly.
- I needed to switch to Nvidia drivers just to connect to a monitor
- General UI was also weird, scaling wasn't always flawless and there were many bugs related to tab management.
Eventually I installed Gnome desktop on Linux mint and i loved the way gnome looks and eventually some people recommend me if I like gnome so much I should just switch to ubuntu.
This brings me to ubuntu, I was kind of amazed with the almost "Apple Like" smoothness and reliability, some of the pros of Ubuntu are are follows:
- Everything works out of the box, the HDMI, App store, Webcam, Wifi and so on
2.UI is very clean and standardized, this reminds me more of a macbook than a linux distro.
I love the fact that you get a HP logo when the PC boots up (i did not get that on mint)my friends were shocked to see that as well, they did not expect this from a Linux distro, everyone thought linux was some magical OS without any official support.
My 60 year old dad also was able to learn to navigate the UI within minutes of using my laptop, that's how intuitive it is, he also quickly was able to adjust to the top mounted calendar and volume switches.
Ubuntu is about 10-15 gb lighter than linux mint, consumes similar amount of RAM.
Tab switching on Ubuntu is miles easier than mint, pressing the windows key is just so much more natural than alt+ tab.
I think i found my distro long term. I dont see any major flaws other than the screenshot keys, i need a Windows+Shift+S and Windows+V like setup on my PC and that's about it.

Just installed Ubuntu on 2010 MacBook
Watched a few videos but I keep getting the error: unable to locate package when trying to download the wifi drivers.
Any advice?
This is my first time ever installing or trying to use a different operating system so bare with me 😂 I’m not very tech savvy

Alternative to Edge for work?
The company uses its platform based on the Edge browser environment. However, the browser keeps freezing a lot. In text input fields on any tab or website, it simply freezes and won't let me type. I have to close the tab, write it down in Notepad, then copy and paste it into the text field. Does anyone have a suggestion for a lighter, compatible browser? I use Firefox, but the company's platform gets misaligned/broken.

Hello from Ubuntu
Just installed Ubuntu for my Robotic project a full 6 DOF robotic arm and i'm really excited for this any suggestions What can I try in this..?
Upgraded from 24.04 to 26.04, 2x faster boot times on my Laptop.
Upgraded from the gui popup inside the nofitications bar. Was easier than updating w*n11. My laptop boots much much more faster now since the upgrade. I dont know if its due to the Rust implementation or since i had an modified GRUB file, but everything works very smooth, no bugs or crashes so far. My only complaint is that the terminals default font changed. Did some digging but apparently no one but me complained about that lol. PS. make that clonezilla image, you wont regret it.

what things do you miss from windows after switching to linux?
i think i will switch to linux and use ubuntu instead of windows.
only thing i see i might miss is there being a gui for everything. i can use the terminal and ask ai so its fine.
only other thing i see that i might miss is ms office ,i use it very casually. so i figured i would either use it inside winboat or wait and see if the artcraft clones do it good and use them.
i want to hear what others miss from windows . so to see if linux will be good experience or not. thanks

Alguém pode me ajudar nessa situação? 😭😭

Canonical early-stage interviews (distributed systems role): what should I expect?
Hi all,
I recently passed the assessment stage for a Software Engineer role at Canonical focused on distributed systems with Python/Go. I’m now moving into the early-stage interviews
So far, I know one of them is a Python deep dive, and I’m guessing another will be a Linux-focused round.
If you’ve gone through this a similar interview loop at Canonical recently, I’d really appreciate any insight on:
- Python deep dive: How deep does it go? Language internals (GIL, memory model, asyncio), design and architecture discussion, or live coding?
- Linux round: What topics came up? Processes and signals, filesystems, networking, debugging tools, containers?
- Third interview: What was it in your case?
- Written interview follow-ups: Did interviewers dig into your written answers?
- Location: Did anyone apply through a region-specific listing (e.g. MENA) while living in another country? Was that an issue later?
- Anything you wish you’d prepared for but didn’t.
Thanks in advance, any experience helps!

26.04.1 LTS swapping to read only
As title says, my drive is swapping to read only and I don’t exactly have an explanation why. I have been troubleshooting this issue for like two days now.
It’s a brand new install, and the problem isn’t exactly repeatable. I’ve had it happen in 10 minutes or 2 hours.
I’m actively attempting a run with these boot image settings active:
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0
pcie_aspm=off
pcie_port_pm=off
This is a dual boot system, and I did disable fast startup on windows. Though I have a feeling it’s not the problem since it’s happening after GRUB.
The hardest part is I’m not sure how much is being logged or the best ways to find errors as I’m still fairly new to Linux. Plus when the read only hits most everything won’t open and the terminal only works for so long. Using CTL+ALT+F3 does bring up a terminal but it’s constantly populated by “systemd-journaID[13441]: Failed to write entry to /var/log/journal/”
I’ve effectively throwing anything at a wall and praying something sticks. I’m just not well versed enough.
Sorry for lengthy post, I just want Linux to work.
Update:
I was able to catch it live using sudo dmesg -w as recommended in a comment.
After catching it I booted to windows and had ran a full block test and extended SMART test, which shows the drive is in good health. It being a 2tb 990 pro just over a year old, it was expected.
I’m down to it possibly being the controller dying on the drive, so I’m testing it by installing Linux again with the same boot media on a different drive, but putting it in the same slot as the previous. Here’s to hoping.

Dell Precision 5820 Tower
Bonjour, je cherche des conseils pour choisir une carte graphique pour mon ordinateur. Voici ma configuration :
Processeur : Intel Xeon W-2223
RAM : 32 Go
Stockage : SSD de 512 Go
Alimentation : 950 W, 80 PLUS Gold
Câbles GPU : deux câbles PCIe 8 broches
Système : Ubuntu
Budget : environ 800 €
Torn on which Encryption option to choose (fresh install)
On one side, I'm used to the standard full disc. But the irritation of having to put in a password twice (decrypt then log in) seems like just an unnecessary irritation. Then of course if you choose to set your user to autologin then you get the irritation of having to put in your password when you open certain applications like Chrome or VSCode.
You of course also have the option of creating a blank keyring to bypass that, but that just seems like a 'hack' that creates risk.
The new option seemed like the solution, but then it automatically decrypts your drive the moment you get to the login screen? Obviously a thief would then need to get past your login password but you still have a decrypted drive.
I just don't understand why the decryption can't be tied to your user password for one, unified login. If someone has managed to find a way to bypass your encryption your data is as good as stolen anyway.

Can't get wake on lan to work, any suggestions?
Have used wake on lan on windows for a while, and never got it working on Ubuntu. Decided to try and solve that issue today but still scratching my head. Currently running Ubuntu Desktop 26.04
I confirmed its enabled in BIOS (and as proof it works with windows)
Here are my connections:
$ nmcli connection show
NAME UUID TYPE DEVICE
netplan-enp8s0 20f2386c-ebb0-3e65-8957-194e76ab2dc8 ethernet enp8s0
lo fcf22f8a-09d5-4a23-88c2-680e2748f150 loopback lo
I then ran:
$ nmcli connection modify "netplan-enp8s0" 802-3-ethernet.wake-on-lan magic
Running the following seems to show its enabled:
$ nmcli connection show "netplan-enp8s0" | grep wake-on-lan
802-3-ethernet.wake-on-lan: magic
802-3-ethernet.wake-on-lan-password: --
$ sudo ethtool enp8s0 | grep "Wake-on"
`Supports Wake-on: pumbg`
`Wake-on: g`
This persists even after reboot
Running the following shows the packet is making it to my computer
$ sudo tcpdump -i enp8s0 -n 'ether proto 0x0842' or 'udp port 9'
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v[v]... for full protocol decode
listening on enp8s0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), snapshot length 262144 bytes

13:25:54.636087 IP 192.168.68.61.60296 > 192.168.71.255.9: UDP, length 102
Yet putting all the pieces together, putting my computer to sleep, I can't wake it from my phone. Anyone have any idea of what I should try?
Edit: after messing with bios settings I wanted to confirm it was still working in Windows, which I can. Worked 5 times in a row. I can also confirm in windows when it goes to sleep lights stay on on the NIC but on Ubuntu they turn off when going to sleep which I'm assuming is the problem. I think the OS is putting the NIC to sleep somehow
