Discussion Is Hong Kong more classist than racist...?

Post image
35 Upvotes

Honestly, we always see different foreigners complaining about how racism affects them in Hong Kong. Then, they pull out a picture of this white guy, implying white people are treated better, and point out how only non-white minorities are pressured to speak Cantonese, while white folks can get their way with English alone.

A few days ago, I saw two different posts around here, one was regarding a white begpacker and the other one was about a white tourist stealing something. The point is, the comments were quite mean. It makes me wonder, is it classism or racism? Is it because most white folks work in MNCs in Hong Kong, which causes locals to have a perception that they're wealthy, so they excuse them for not knowing Cantonese or local culture?

What if it was a rich Indian, Korean, Arab, or Mexican? Would it be the same? If so, then clearly it's classism and not racism.

What do you all think?

Event LoL Worlds 2026 Finals Viewing Party

After the great success we had with last year’s party, we’re back again!

My good friend Nik and I will be hosting a viewing party for the 2026 League of Legends World Finals and we hope to see you there!

While the venue has changed, the vibes will be the same. Drinks, good people and hopefully a banger series for us to enjoy.

Because the final is on in the wee hours of the morning and the venue has to stay open late for us, this year there will be a $200 HKD per person entry fee. Don’t worry though - that will include 2 drink tickets!

We’re also starting the party a little earlier this year so people can have a chance to hangout and have some fun before the games start. If you’re lucky you might just win some free drinks too!

If you’re interested in attending, check out the event link here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/league-of-legends-worlds-2026-watch-party-in-hong-kong-tickets-2003756187697

We hope to see all of you back again to cheer for your favourite team and to ruin our sleep schedules together 😂

P.s. Shout out to the girls who made the T1 cookies last year, you guys are awesome!

Questions/ Tips Manulife MPF fund management

In Manulife's MPF, the North American Equity fund has only grown by around 6% over the past year. While the New York Stock Exchange has grown by 12%.

I'm no financial guru, but how do the fund managers at Manulife manage to lose half of the growth? Pretty irritating to see my pension fund grow less than the real cost of living increase.

I've tried to solve a pain point for myself and aggregated a lot of open data from Hong Kong into a little iOS app. So here it is... Ad free, no sign up, no data collection, no payment. Just a little app to hopefully enjoy.

career Success and Reject stories?

Hey everyone,

Just posting to see the success and reject stories for NEW/FRESH grads.

I understand it’s been to say the least, an absolutely horrific job market (including for myself). And I’m trying to really get an idea, is it just me or are a lot of people just not getting entry level jobs anymore

I only ever hear the HKUST people getting jobs and some HKU/CUHK but a lot of others aren’t from what I’ve observed

Looking forward to the comments

Thanks

Questions/ Tips Taobao returns - Seller approved but unable to send back

Problem number 1: I am dumb and bought items without "local returns"
Problem number 2: total value is 3800hkd
Problem number 3: Customs regulations

So, I was shopping for drives and ended up buying them from Taobao (maybe this is problem number 0.5). Drives arrive but look a bit off, I start checking them and surprise surprise, they are not genuine.

Ok, I want to return them. Seller approves, I get the return info I thought I'd need and go to the SF Express. Except they cannot take the shipment without recipient's ID as required by China customs regulations.

Seller does not provide their ID, Taobao customer support cannot even be AI as even AI would not give that dumb answers, like "Use Canada Post"... hello?

So, I cannot send drives back because I don't have recipient's ID, seller only replies with handshake emoji when asked, and Taobao CS is trying to get me running in circles.

Has anyone successfully returned higher price items to Taobao seller, and if yes, how were you able to accomplish that?

For those of you who miss 80s and 90s in Hong Kong… This Eurodisco/synth-pop was very popular in the clubs during that time… I am sure it will bring memories for many. Timeless gem by Modern Talking.

Travel Good vibe dinner restaurants with Cantonese food?

Visiting HK for the first time with friends late 20s. Looking for that HK family dinner experience from a nice restaurant that’s not super upscale but is enough to dress well at and has a cool vibe with traditional cuisine.

Comparable to a nice steakhouse or seafood in the U.S, but make it Hong Kong style.

TIA ALL!! :) cheers

Thumbnail
thecollectivehk.com
• Upvotes

Thumbnail

Questions/ Tips Converting Probationary Driving License to Full License process

Hello does anyone know the full process to converting your probationary license to a full driving license?

I cant do it on iamsmart as the system doesn’t let me go past a section. I’ve heard that I can just go into a transport department, with a form and my license and HKID and line up?

The clarity Id like to ask advice for is - what time should I go and queue, and do I need any other documents (it’s not fully clear for me on the website)? Anyone done it at the Kowloon office?

Questions/ Tips Can't withdraw cash with foreign card

Hi everyone I've come from Australia to Hong Kong and I'm having lots of trouble with finding ATM'S that will accept my card. I've tried quite a few already from various banks, and have even gone into HSBC and asked there. Everywhere I go the transaction is declined, and my card is working fine so I am very confused as to why I can't withdraw cash. I also cannot get an Octopus card without cash so I'm in quite a bind. Anyone know what I can do?

Update Because people are asking and i forgot that I hadn't update the post in both subs, im using a debit mastercard. My bank has said it should be OK to withdraw (there are no foreign withdrawals issues, etc), and I have opened a HSBC account because it looks like it could be a reoccurring issue regardless of if it works for now (which it still doesn't).

Questions/ Tips Need recommendations for shoe adhesive

A while ago, I saw that my work shoes have a spot in the sole where it’s flapping out.

Previous experience back in Canada had me rely on Barge contact cement, but that stuff isn’t easy to get here.

Can someone recommend a local brand that is just as effective and where I could buy it(I would rather get it myself than wait for online ordering). Preferably somewhere around Central

Questions/ Tips Planning a Hong Kong trip and want to order from Pinduoduo 🇭🇰📦 How long does delivery to a hotel usually take?

I’m planning to travel to Hong Kong soon, and I’m thinking of ordering some stuff from Pinduoduo (拼多多) and having it delivered to my hotel while I’m there.

For those who have tried this before:

📦 How long does Pinduoduo usually take to deliver to a Hong Kong address?

I really want to avoid arriving at my hotel only to find out my packages haven’t arrived yet. Would love to hear from anyone who has done this before! Any tips, personal experiences, or recommendations would be super helpful. Thank you! 💗

Questions/ Tips Moving to HK soon, where to live?

Moving to HK soon under the top talent scheme. I'm 25M, speak Mandarin and Cantonese. My work is mostly going to be split between Shenzhen (Xili in the future, Pingshan, and Futian will be my main destinations) and at-home work with some work travel, so ideally I'd like the airport express and the Shenzhen border to be easily accessible.

Looking for a 1 bed/1bath or 2 bed/1 bath, budget probably 25k HKD monthly - that's what I was paying in the Bay Area. One thing is it absolutely has to be a newer build with central AC, no sewer gases from the floor drains, flushable toilet paper, no "wet room" bathroom, and a decent kitchen for cooking.

Glancing at the map it seems like Austin station might be good being a 10 minute walk to West Kowloon and on the airport express, but I don't recall it being a particularly popping neighborhood with amenities in walking distance whenever I got off there. What other areas should I be looking into?
