150 Ft. Ethernet from the main house to a barn

Yes, I know this question has been asked before. Yes, I know and agree that performance is adequate with a 150 foot run of Cat 5, meant to be buried in the ground, but I have a unique wrinkle to the problem.

I've been having trouble lately with my VOIP phone through Google Voice using the old Obihai boxes. When I answer the phone, the handshake between the phone and Google doesn't seem to work well and I often can't answer the phone when it rings.

I tried the T-Mobile wireless internet and everything works just fine with a direct connection to the router and a short run of cable. This got me thinking that amplification of the signal might solve my problem with a repeater/amplifier of some sort?

What do you all think?

Advice Self hosted VPN? Need some suggestions

Hi everyone,

I currently have a VPS that I use as a personal VPN server, but I’m looking to switch to a solution that supports the built-in VPN clients on both macOS and Windows, without needing additional software.

Ideally, I’d like something self-hosted with a web UI for managing users, devices, and connections.
Any recommendations or experiences with similar setups?
Thanks!

help me solve this puzzle

Long story short: packet loss and ping jitter on a LAN PC been a problem for a year now and ISP has no clue what to do or where to look.

  • Router upgraded (2Gbps download)
  • New CAT-7 cable installed
  • Same issue appears on multiple devices and servers/tests
  • Limiting bandwidth / turning off wifi completely doesn't help the issue
  • Ping to router is always stable <1ms
  • Ping to anything else permanently jitters no matter what
  • Internet used to be flawless for 10 years, I've changed nothing on my end til this occured

One very interesting hint is that when I run waveform's bufferbloat test (which I always score D or F because I get +600ms download latency under load) and it finishes, the following 30 seconds my internet is literally perfect 0ms jitter but then returns to garbage.

I highly suspect the issue is in the ISP's infrastructure and cables outside of my house but I'm unsure how to confirm while they are taking their time on it :)

I will be infinitely grateful if anyone takes some time to help solve this because I'm genuinely curious what is causing it and I'm going insane.

Unsolved What can I do to fix my bad internet

Hello!
I’m renting and the internet here has been extremely bad. Me and my gf plays video games but it’s unplayable because of the lag.

We’ve got a WiFi extension here because the WiFi is the same that the people we rent from upstairs, but it doesn’t really work very well and we keep it unplugged.

Is there anything we can buy or do to fix this? To make it better? It wasn’t this bad when we moved in. We talked to the landlord and he suggested taking out the extension and that worked for a while, but now nothing works. I literally got two bars on the phone ALL THE TIME and I turn of my wifi on my phone when I play. Not that it does anything.

D-Link DMS-1250-18P - Any owner impressions?

Hey All, I'm interested in a D-Link DMS-1250-18P switch.

https://www.dlink.com/en/products/dms-1250-18p-18-port-2-5g-layer-2-standard-smart-poe-switch

Its an 18-Port 2.5G Smart Managed PoE Switch and seems quite reasonably priced for a switch with so many 2.5G ports AND POE.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of these? Is the management GUI ok, are the fans noisy / audible, reliability etc?

Do I need to change my home wifi setup?

Hey,

I currently have a TP Link Archer AX73 as my main router on one side of the apartment and also an ASUS RT-AX1800U that is set up as an Access Point in the middle of the apartment. This covers the area well with no real wifi deadspots right now, but given the fact that my main router is in an electricity panel box on the entrance, and the AP is in the middle of the flat (~4m away, 1.5 ish walls between), I do experience 1 slight problem. Whenever I go from my working room (which is right by the entrance and therefore connected to the main router) and towards the main area/other rooms, my scrolling laggs - the WiFi name and password is the same but they still break whenever I am moving around.

My question is whether or not I should:

A) Replace AP, disable Wifi on main router and set up something like TP Link Deco X20 (2 of them) for a Mesh system
B) Replace AP with 1-2 TP Link Wifi range extenders (i.e. RE705X)
C) Possible fix available without spending a dime.

Advice Using VoIP phone and an analog phone with ATA in same router, have I grasped this correctly?

Hi all, I currently have a Yealink VoIP phone plugged into my ISP's router. I do still have an analogue phone & landline number that I don't use now, but that would be useful to get into for a while so I can change my number with certain places that need to call me on that landline number as part of the update my details process, that sort of thing.

I've done some reading up here & elsewhere and am thinking of just trialling a basic ATA maybe a grandstream, am I right that it will be ok to try using it alongside my VoIP phone? My ISP router has 2 ethernet ports and the ATA will have an RJ11 adapter.

Is it straightforward or is there anything else to be aware of, for example a poster on here mentioned in reply to a similar question that "technically you should disconnect the telco phone line from the outside of your house", hoping this isn't necessary?

Thanks for any tips.

Unsolved Servers on not reaching the internet

Hello,

I have a problem with hosting any kinds of servers on my PC, and I can't find a way to troubleshoot it.

Some things first about me and my system, is that I have very little experience in network management specifically. I'd say I have a developed understanding of computers and software, but just not anything that involves internet. I'm running Arch Linux on a personal computer, NetworkManager with iwd backend and ufw firewall.

I've previously managed to successfully host a QLDS server, and a Minecraft Java server over the internet (Open port -> launch server, it was pretty straightforward). But after reinstalling my system (Archlinux again) they seem to have stopped receiving nor sending any public traffic, and can only connect locally. I still have the same IP address and the same ports forwarded on my router. Not very proud of it but I have tried to vibetroubleshoot it with an AI like Claude, which didn't bring any results.

I'm kind of stumped of where to even begin or look, and could really use some navigation. Would appreciate it lots, thanks.

Looking for CAT6 PoE tracer recommendations

I would like to ask for your recommendations on which CAT6 PoE cable tester/tracer to purchase. I didn't have a need for one in years, but I'll be doing a home install for someone and need to get one.

I've looked at testnetwork.co.uk/detail/multifunction-network-cable-tester/ and it seems to have everything needed, but I wonder if there is a kit that I could get which is just as good but doesn't cost as much.

I will be ordering this in England, therefore looking for recommendations that wouldn't take a long time to arrive after purchase.

Unsolved Help - constant DNS issues since installing new router

Good day fellow citizens of r/HomeNetworking! I humbly seek your advice on the following matter that's been troubling me the past week.

So I recently recontracted my home broadband plan with my telco to a 5Gbps plan and along with it came a new ONT (which connects to my home's telco-installed FOT) and router (we'll call the telco router Router A). My home setup has a separate router in my room, connected via a trunked cable to the ONT (Router B), for me to have a wifi source directly in my room and also to act as an ethernet switch to allow both my wife and myself to have wired internet connection from the single ethernet port in my room.

Previously, I was using a secondhand Linksys EA7500 for Router B which had no issues for the four-odd years I used it. With this refresh of my home broadband setup I decided to replace it with a Huawei BE3 Pro which I bought secondhand as well. Did a factory reset on it before setting it up, and initially all was good.

However, it frequently gives us connection issues, specifically for webpages and anything requiring DNS. Trying to open pages in Chrome I'll see a DNS_PROBE_STARTED followed by a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG error, cycling between the two.

Initially, I had Router B connected to Router A instead of the ONT, and was informed by a friend that that might be the cause of the issue. However, connecting it to the ONT instead didn't resolve it.

While I'm aware that resetting the router can solve the problem, it continues to re-occur and I'm looking for a more long-term solution - is there something wrong with my setup, a hardware issue with the router, or some settings I can tweak to solve the problem?

Other potentially useful information:
- ipconfig shows Ethernet DNS Servers as Router B's IP address
- Attempted to flush DNS to no avail
- Router is currently on all automatic settings; potentially relevant, there are options for Dynamic DNS and manual IPv6 DNS but I don't know how to use them (the suggested address for the latter isn't in the 8.8.8.8 format that I expected)

Thanks in advance everyone!

Advice Simple home wifi setup

Looking for some advice on how to setup my home. I have an in wall box, that has the modem in it with our fiber line. Then each main room of the house has a singular cat 5e to a solo ethernet wall plate. Then our router is in one of the bedrooms. My problem is that since the modem goes directly to the router, none of our other cords have a place to plug in, so we have 4 rooms with outlets, but only 1 of them works (the master bedroom). I was thinking of getting a switch, but am trying to avoid having a bunch of extra network stuff in our bedroom. Any thoughts on best way to resolve this?

I have a generic modem, and then a eero 6 for the router. I also have a 5 port tp link switch available. Is my best option just to run evrything inside my enclosure and plug all the in wall runs to the switch? Worried about keeping the eero in the enclosure

Advice VPN Advice Please

Ok so here's my dilemma, perviously I used the Nord suite of apps, NordVPN (Configured in my Flint 2 Router, and also running on my phone), and Nord pass for passwords etc.

I have recently setup Nextcloud and Immich on my Unraid server and have them working nicely through tailscale so I can connect with the corresponding apps on my phone.

Problem I now have is that I connot use Nordvpn on my phone whilst also using tailscale.

Anyone have any suggestions, I have stumbled on Mullvad that integrates with tailscale, but any advice from folk that have experience or solved a similar issue.

Thanks

Advice UCG Max + U5G Max behind a Cisco managed switch: can I use the 5G Max on a dedicated WAN port, or is the LAN/GRE setup the only way?

Hi all, looking for advice from anyone running a U5G Max with a UCG Max.

My setup - UCG Max as the gateway - U5G Max with two SIMs (Eir and Vodafone, set to failover) - Cisco Catalyst 3750X-24P (managed, PoE+) that all my devices hang off - Express 7 AP on UCG port 3 and a Mac Studio on port 4 - Two cables from the UCG to the switch: port 2 and port 5

What I was seeing Under Internet in UniFi I had 3 WANs listed: WAN1 (port 1, nothing plugged in), a WAN2 I created on port 5, and "UniFi 5G". The U5G Max is powered by the switch (PoE) and sits on my main LAN with a static IP. I assumed it needed its own WAN port on the UCG, but I couldn't set port 5 as WAN because it was one of my two links to the switch, and I didn't want to lose the switch.

What I tried I made an isolated VLAN (99) on the Cisco switch with only two ports in it. One port went to the 5G Max and the other went to UCG port 5, which I set to WAN2. I also moved the switch uplink to a single trunk on UCG port 2. The switch side looked fine. Both MACs showed up in VLAN 99 and PoE was on.

But WAN2 never got an IP and the U5G Max showed as unreachable in UniFi. I had no internet until I put the 5G Max back on the normal LAN VLAN.

What I found afterwards Looking at the UCG, it already talks to the U5G Max over the LAN through a GRE tunnel, and that tunnel is the "UniFi 5G" WAN. So my isolated VLAN cut the tunnel. As far as I can tell the 5G Max doesn't hand out an IP on its Ethernet port like a normal modem, so a WAN port has nothing to get an address from.

What I actually want My servers use a lot of bandwidth and I'd like them on one connection so they can't bottleneck the rest of the house, with home devices on a different one. I know about policy based routing in UniFi, but I need two real WANs for that.

Questions 1. Is it supported to plug a U5G Max directly into a UCG WAN port (with a PoE injector) and have it work as a WAN? Or does it have to be on a LAN network? 2. If the LAN and GRE method is the only way, what would you use as a second WAN for the split?

Thanks in advance. Happy to share more details or screenshots if it helps.

Wifi connection

• I have been experiencing, for four days, a problem of sudden and momentary drops in Wi-Fi network performance across all connected devices in the home (phones, computers, gaming consoles). The problem does not appear as a complete outage of service, but rather as a sharp and sudden spike in ping during games, sudden freezing of videos (Real / YouTube), or an automatic drop in streaming quality from 2160p (4K) resolution to 144p for a period ranging between 5 and 10 seconds.Data and analyses that have been confirmed:

  1. Stability of internet throughput (speed): When performing a speed test, it turns out that the throughput is full and stable, which means that the crisis is not a weakness in the speed of the line coming into the home, but rather a problem in the stability and consistency of data processing and flow (Packet Loss /

Latency).Separation of frequencies: My 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are completely separate with different names and passwords, and the problem occurs when connecting to either of them, and disappears temporarily for only a few seconds when manually switching between the two networks or re-enabling Wi-Fi on the phone.Effect of the 1.1.1.1 (WARP) application: It has been concluded that running the Cloudflare WARP application (known programmatically as @string/four_ones) on the phone solves the problem completely and immediately, which conclusively proves that the problem is confined to the firewall, routing protocols, or the presence of congestion and issues in the default DNS servers belonging to

the service provider (ISP DNS).

Any solutions?

Advice Advice on Fixing Lag Spikes

Background: So I have recently started a job where I work from home and I am also a gamer. I live in a condo complex and have very little knowledge about wifi and how it works so apologies if I sound like an idiot at all.

My WiFi has been terrible for a while. Averaging about 90-110 ping while playing video games. Watching TV would always buffer and things were slow to load on my computer. I recently got new wifi with spectrum and the change has been amazing. Ping down to 40-50, TV runs fine, and computer performs as it should. But I have noticed some violent lag spikes while gaming. About every couple minutes on some games it would jump to 170-300 ping for a couple seconds.

I did a bufferbloat test and got a grade of F. But I am unsure on how to fix that. I’ve heard about waiting from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz (my room is about 30-40 feet from the router through one wooden wall). I have heard about switching the channel I am using or changing the upload/download speed. My issue is that I don’t really know what any of that means, how to do that, or what will actually work because I am not tech savvy when it comes to internet.

None of my stuff has an Ethernet connection and it isn’t really an option. I also don’t have an WiFi extenders. How can I fix the lag spikes?

TLDR: annoying lag spikes that I don’t know how to fix. F grade on bufferbloat test and I am not tech savvy enough to understand how any of this works or the lingo.

Jio AirFiber disconnects every morning before 5 AM

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm trying to diagnose a recurring Jio AirFiber issue and would appreciate help from anyone familiar with wireless backhaul, P2MP networks, or Jio's C6/RMDU setup.

For the past 4 days, my connection and my neighbour's connection have been going down simultaneously, usually before 5 AM.

What I've observed:

- My indoor router shows a red LOS light.

- The rooftop C6 LVD stays green.

- The RMDU has a blinking green LED on port 1 (mine)and a steady green LED on port 2(neighbour).

- My Jio mobile data continues to work during the outage.

- Both connections worked perfectly for around 6 months before this started.

What has been changed:

- C6 replaced.

- RM/RMDU replaced twice.

The issue still keeps recurring, and service returns after a technician intervenes. Unfortunately, I haven't been present to observe exactly what they do to restore it.

I'm wondering whether this could be a scheduled reset, a shared power issue, an upstream radio/backhaul problem, or a fault with the RMDU's uplink.

Questions:

  1. What would you investigate first, given that both connections fail simultaneously at almost the same time every morning?

  2. Can the C6 remain green while the upstream link is down?

  3. What do the RMDU port LEDs actually indicate on this setup?

  4. Technicians say that the C6 is close to the tower so it is failing. But it didn't for the past 6 months.

I've attached a photo of the rooftop installation. Any technical insights or suggestions for narrowing down the root cause would be appreciated.

Advice Router Causes High Latency and Slow Internet When EON TV Box Is Connected

As the title suggests, I'm having issues with my Ethernet connection when my IPTV box is connected to my Ubee EVW32C-0N router.

When the IPTV box is connected, my ping to the router (192.168.0.1) sits around 25 ms and sometimes spikes to 50 ms. When loading web pages I have these enormous spikes. This also makes ordinary web pages load noticeably slower than usual.

Even when the IPTV box is turned off, the issue persists. The only thing that consistently fixes it is physically disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the IPTV box. Once I do that, my ping to the router drops below 1 ms and everything loads normally again.

I've already tried different router ports and other troubleshooting steps, but I haven't found a permanent solution. I'm now installing Wireshark to see if I can identify anything unusual about the network traffic.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be an issue with the router's IPTV/multicast handling, IGMP snooping, a faulty IPTV box, or the router itself?

Would replacing the router likely solve this, or should I investigate something else first? I'm open to suggestions for diagnosing the root cause and finding a permanent fix.
