Unsolved My dorm room is a massive dead zone

0 Upvotes

So my dorm is a building complex with rooms. Military bunk,public toilet and bathroom. All the likes of a university that doesn't care about comfort etc etc

Each building has a wifi network that gets connected via a website portal. So if you go to another complex or cafeteria you have to login separately.

Anyway, problem is, my room for this year is at the second floor, in a room that's essentially a 6x4 ish dead zone.

There are a few spots where I can put my phone in and hotspot and my laptop wifi connection is so bad.

I got a wifi dongle since my laptop is old to remedy it a bit and hopefully that'll help a little.

But I'm considering an extender or a travel modem because the bad wifi has been an issue in most rooms I've been in. It's just unbearable in this one.

So, would this in any way be effective or would I just be wasting my money.

Can I connect this patch panel so the modem runs ethernet to another room?

Moved into a new apartment, every room has 1-2 wall jacks and has this home network cabinet set up, none of the ports are labeled what rooms they go to but appear to be wired. Can I plug the modem into the wall jack in it's room, and connect that signal in this patch panel to be able to plug into the wall jack in my room for ethernet? (Wall jack in my room is second image)

Thanks!

Eni networks doble nat

0 Upvotes

Unsolved Not a wiz with networking-at a loss for speed with deco mesh network

Thumbnail

I have t mobile previously Vexus internet. I pay for 1gb internet. I have a deco x55 mesh router x 5 throughout my home. My Ethernet cable goes from the wall to my primary deco router (office) then a wired connection to my computer as well. The wired connection pulls 950+ mbps but the WiFi only pulls max 50mbps.

I tried to solve on my own-I removed 2 decos as there was concern that 5 decos caused congestion. That moved my speed from 30-50. I tried pulling them all from the main deco but the coverage is 1/3 bars in the pit if I do that so I have to daisy chain it to the great room instead.
I cannot imagine what is causing my slowdown on the WiFi speed.

Qos is off

Please help-my wife hates when her shows don’t load bc of the shit bandwidth

Advice Phone Wi-Fi becomes extremely slow in my room whenever my Ethernet-connected PC is on. What could be causing this?

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm having a strange internet issue and would appreciate some opinions on what might be causing it. Whenever I turn on my PC, the Wi-Fi on my phone becomes extremely slow, but only when I'm inside my room. When I leave my room and go somewhere else in the house, the Wi-Fi becomes fast again. My PC is connected to the router through Ethernet and doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi. The router is located downstairs, not in my room.

What's strange is that when I turn off my PC, my phone's Wi-Fi immediately becomes fast again. I also tried unplugging the Ethernet cable while leaving my PC turned on, and the Wi-Fi became fast again. My PC's Ethernet connection shows a link speed of 1000/1000 Mbps, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Could this be caused by Ethernet interference, a network configuration issue, or something related to my PC affecting the Wi-Fi signal inside my room? Has anyone experienced something similar, and what would you recommend I try to identify the cause? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

ONT refuses to function with router

7 Upvotes

First off, my ISP is T-Mobile Fiber (fiber was recently rolled out in my area and T-Mobile is currently the sole fiber provider here). I'll just refer to it as T-Fiber.

So, to try and keep things short: T-Fiber was installed, the device they threw on me is the nokia xs-2426x-a. Our service was completely non-functional the weekend it was installed (nokia device leds claimed otherwise). Called T-Fiber about that, and about getting a public ip address to continue our port forwarding. Day comes around where a tech is supposed to show up so I threw a temporary router on it (Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra) because our permanent router (Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Fiber) was in use with our Spectrum cable internet (which we were going to cancel once we could finally transition everything over). It worked, no problem (outside of double nat). Tech was a no show, but, okay, the service was working. Call about replacing the nokia device with a pure ONT only box OR doing bridge mode. They ended up setting it into bridge mode. Cool, this is nice, it works, port forwarding works, but I can't actually truly use the service at this point because I'm not allowed to transition our permanent gear to it.

Fast forward a few weeks, I try to temporarily move our ucg fiber router to it and the nokia ont absolutely refuses to function with it. Hot swap the ucg ultra back in and its like nothing happened, internet just works flawlessly. Do it again, same result. I call T-Fiber about this and figure they'll do something on their side and don't press further since I still can't transition our permanent gear over at this point in time.

Fast forward to Monday (10/19/26): I can finally transition our permanent gear to it and the nokia device REFUSES to function with the ucg fiber like before. The ucg ultra has gone to a new home so I can't swap that back in to see if it will still work with it. I call T-Fiber about this and my situation gets handed off to a fiber tech based in new york who's work hours are my work hours (I'm in california) so we can barely even talk to each other. Their team pushes through a session clear (I think that's what he called it) to clear the old mac address around wednesday, no change. He tells me they'll try to just redo the bridge mode today (10/23) but this was pretty much at the end of their day so I have no idea if they got around to it, but, it's the weekend now so nothing will be done for the next couple days. Called the standard T-Fiber line to complain more about this absurd situation and to request a replacement ont in the off chance the one we have is simply defective.

This service has been completely non-functional all week long and I have no idea why. The ucg fiber's dashboard shows occasional bits of communication between it and the ont but no isp and no isp ip address, and, yes, I have tried hooking up other routers and the nokia ont (onr?) refuses to communicate with those as well. I can look at the ports through the unifi gui and it is reporting that the ont is connected and even has its mac address and the fact that its connected via 10gb uplink.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be here? Why the ont refuses to function with other routers? And, apologies for the wall of text.

Unsolved Unifi u7 AP carries traffic and power, does not work.

1 Upvotes

Very weird issue, reused old cabling in attic from previous home owner. Gonna keep description simple, I have a unifi ugc ultra gateway, U7 AP , tp link poe switch.

*ETH cables connected by keystone jacks!!!
* All cables work for poe and on ETH pin testing tool

Bad Scenario: AP turns on, success light, shows network, cannot connect

switch -> eth cable 1 -> eth cable 2 -> AP

Good Scenarios that work!

  1. switch -> eth cable 1 -> eth cable 2 -> AP -> eth3 -> laptop
  2. switch -> eth cable 1 -> eth cable 2 -> laptop
  3. switch -> eth cable 1 -> AP
  4. switch -> eth cable 1 -> laptop

Weird!!

In my bad scenario, my AP has eth ports I can connect to and it works! And the eth that the AP uses works with laptop.

So my AP is getting POE, carrying traffic literally through it, displaying a network, but does not work.

Advice Spectrum router causing Bufferbloat issues what are my options?

3 Upvotes

I have a 500/25mbps connection (it will be upgraded at some point to 500/500, since i got the text about it last month).

I've been having a lot of issues lately getting massive lag spikes in games. I finally looked it up and a post suggested running a Bufferbloat test. I did so and it did come back poor on the cloudflare speedtest for gaming and C grade on waveform. So i think this Spectrum router is just terrible (My PC is plugged directly into the router via ethernet cable). I need wifi though as i can't get a phone signal in my house (The roof is metal and blocks the signal). Would buying something like a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra and connecting that directly to my Spectrum modem and then plugging my gaming PC into that help? Then plugging my Spectrum router into the Cloud Gateway Ultra instead of my Modem? That way i can still have Wifi for my phones and get the Ubiquiti experience on my Desktop PC (The main thing i care about). I was thinking about getting a Dream Router 7 during blackfriday, but seeing that new price increases due to memory shortages. I don't think it will be cheap enough during blackfriday for me to pull the plug on it. I need something that allows Vlan or VAP though. Since i wanna set up a wifi network that my family uses on their own vlan/VAP. Since their kids be download anything on their phones and don't want their phones talking to my devices. There better options that don't involve OpenWRT? Not really sure the route to take.

Advice I’m at a complete loss and need help

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I’ve just moved house in the last month. And I’ve now had my new WiFi installed today. It’s the Hub 5 from virgin media 1GB.

The general use of the WiFi is perfect, the download and upload speeds are as advertised, quite a few people/devices using it and no issues whatsoever for general use.

However. When playing games there is a slight but incredibly noticeable jitter every few seconds, for online games, it makes them unplayable. The easiest way I can describe it is things not happening on my screen for a split second, then suddenly they’ve already happened during that split second every few seconds.

The hub is the exact same location the previous temporary WiFi box was (which itself had little to no issue) which is within 2ft of the console. I’ve tried both Ethernet and wireless and it’s the same outcome across different games. For reference it’s on a PS5.

I’ve attached a speed test for anyone that knows more than me about this; which isn’t hard. But I can’t seem to diagnose what the problem would be, and my trusty friend chatGPT is living in La La land with it, TIA

I am stuck with TP-link products. I dont want to rebuy my entire network, just trying to make it work with existing products i own.

Advice Another Router Rec post [WIFI]

1 Upvotes

As I am upgrading my solar I thought I would upgrade the router before they connect as the router is 12 years old. The IP sells TP420-Gv2. A friend recommended Google

Copilot suggested Google nest pro 3pk or TP Link Archer AX55 Pro

4br house Fibre to premises (nbn) Router in garage at front of house.

Does the Google nest sound right?

Solved! Upgraded MoCA to 2.5 Gbps - Success

Thumbnail
gallery
95 Upvotes

I have a computer upstairs with a piece of coax cable leading downstairs to the network closet. I recently upgraded the MoCA adapters, with good results. iPerf test shown is between a Mac Mini (M4), and a DS425+. There are switches at each end that are also rated for 2.5 Gbps Ethernet. Obviously, every network interface in the path has to be 2.5 Gbps-capable. In my case, the last items to be upgraded were the MoCA adapters. This is with a dedicated piece of coax cable which is not carrying TV or anything else besides my Ethernet traffic. There are no splitters involved. (Even though the goCoax instructions talk about splitters a lot.)

It's not shown, but MoCA adapters work in pairs, so there is another identical one at the other end of the coax cable. All Ethernet and coax cables stayed the same when I swapped in the new goCoax adapters.

I was looking for a speed increase and I got it. I also reduced the retrys that I was seeing. I am still getting some retries now, but less, and the speed is still >2.31 Gbits/sec. I'm not sure why retries happen in this scenario other than the general imperfection of coax as a medium.

Advice Media Enclosure Options

Post image
49 Upvotes

My best friend (who wouldn’t know the difference between T568B or A) just finished building his retirement house. He followed my advice and got all Ethernet everywhere. Problem is, they didn’t run or install a media enclosure. It’s all run in this cabinet. Would y’all recommend giving up on the media enclosure and just organizing the cabinet (putting in a patch panel, spooling the wires, wall mounted switch, etc)? Pull the shelves and install the media enclosure in there?
